I've seen a patio style door with sidelights that open like windows. I saw it at a Home Depot, but can't recall who makes it. I know I've seen it before, so it must be fairly common. The door is hinged, and opens like a regular door. But the sidelights also swing in, like a reverse casement, allowing for ventilation. If I stop at Home Depot anytime soon, I'll check on the manufacturer. I have no idea if they'll do blinds between the glass.
I also know that most companies can combine windows with doors, provided there is sufficient support between the units, like a stud. If you have a 6' slider, you could downsize to a 3' door and single window, or a door and 2 narrow windows.
I know Thermatru offers doors with blinds between the glass, and they are a lot cheaper than Pella.

Thank you for the reply Mike. From what you say, I can only surmise that my window guy does not like any carpentry involved. I asked him if he could install a door and window a couple years ago, and he said "NO". So I did nothing because ...you want what you want, right?

But he is back and says Jeld-wen has a door and sidelight arrangement that might work. So we will see.

I would have kept trying different people, but I live in a small town, try tiny, and getting anyone from the big city out here for one door is a trick.

I saw the one at home depot you are talking about. And actually attempted to buy it at one time, but could not find anyone to wait on me, and then later, they could not find an installer for me, because it would have taken a little enlargement of the doorway.

Everything is hard - or else we would all have new doors.

We do this quite often. A 72" rough opening for a patio door is pretty standard in the industry. The height of the existing opening will be the biggest issue. The standard replacement door and frame come built at 81 1/2". If you can get an 82" height out of your existing opening your good to go. If you can't, then you'll need to order a cut down unit to match your existing height (minus a quarter inch for insulation). The standard 36" door with double 14" side lights comes stock at 68 1/2". By spreading the mulls (this is adding wood between the door frame and the side light frame) an 1 1/2" each you get 71 1/2" unit width. This will leave appropriate room for insulation and fit right back in the opening. The only problem is you need a skilled installer to make the right measurements for the new unit. That will be the hardest part for you!

I'm not surprised to hear about the poor service from Home Depot. The door company is Atrium Door.
I am surprised they couldn't find an installer. Home Depot has an installed sales program, called At Home Services. They should have qualified contractors on file.
But you're better off with your own contractor, I think.
