Update on my Mirrored Dining Table

As you may remember(or not), I commissioned a table to be made of an antiqued mirror top and a vintage industrial iron base-- very much like this table which was listed on 1st dibs.

Unfortunately, I heard from the seller this week and she is having problems with her mirror guy. In her words, he is being tempermental and difficult. His first image of the mirror was not as "layered" or beautiful as the first one he did and when she asked him to take more photos or to continue with the distressing, he dug his heels in the ground and refused. Refused to work with her-- and refused to respond to emails or phone calls.

So, sadly, my update is that the seller and I agreed, together, to not continue through with the sale. I am disappointed, but I feel badly that she has had such a struggle with the mirror artisan. I very much want to support small businesses and artists but I do not want to put my hard earned money into the hands so unappreciative of the customer. This is a commissioned work-- he is working to spec. I DO appreciate that the seller is mindful of my interests and my pocketbook. Delivered, the table would have been close to $3000. That is not a small amount of money to me and I would have been very upset if the table was not gorgeous. Perhaps we reacted too quickly but I put my trust in the seller and she isnt pleased so I have opted to follow her lead.

So there it is. I am back on the search. Sigh.

Oh that really is a bummer! I was really looking forward (as many of us were) to see it. I agree that's good the seller was honest about the difficulty etc she was having with him. Something will come up eventually that is better and is mean to be! I don't understand why the guy would give her a hard time. Take some pride in your work for crying out loud, ya know.

Too bad! It's a good thing the seller was looking out for you, though. So many people/businesses today don't do that anymore.

I'm sure the perfect table is out there for you!

oakleyok - thanks for the idea. I'll look into those shutters. They are beautiful! I'm afraid of the sticker shock, though... jant - I'm so glad that you mentioned the film. My GC suggested it and I know the look on my face must have been awful because he said "No, really, it doesn't look as bad as you're thinking! You can't really even see it!" :) The window to replace it is just out of the budget right now considering the reno, so this is a very good option. Glad to hear that you know people that are happy with it! anncarolyn - now, that is a tempting offer. Hmmm... Might have to chat with the DH tonight. Transport could be a bear. You wouldn't happen to be close-by would you? We are in KY.

Hi juliekcmo. I'm procrastinating right now, so here I am, on GW. I'm sure I'll get motivated to find the painting supplies that are packed away in the basement soon... So, that room is really nice. The one thing that immediately hits me is the need for curtain panels. If the color is a keeper (you know how hard it is to actually convey the true color in a photo) I might play with the idea of curtains that are closet to the wall color, so they add texture but yet not add another color. That's where I'd start. I think a rug would really be nice in there too. And since you have to move the table anyway when Thanksgiving comes It would be easy to roll it up (take it to the carpet place nearby and have it cleaned during that time) and then put it back after the holidays all nice and fresh. Sort of like a little spa time for the rug. ;) Then, maybe a new chandy. It can act as a piece of art in the room. You can also add one of those faux plaster thingamajigs on the ceiling where the chandy goes. Medallion, that's it. Faux plaster medallion. That really would give your ceiling more interest. Well, I guess I better go find the blue painters tape and get my project moving....

Beautiful job! I don't know if you have time to go back to the fabric store. If so, get the same fabric and smush it up. See how it will hang. You might only see small parts of the fabric or things you're not especially interested in seeing. Though I really love ikat (I might be in the very minority here), I think of them as more of a trendy fabric even though it's been around for thousands of years. The floral is pretty and it reminds me of the fabric in your living room on the ottomans you like. Though, it does have a modern look to it. But to me (hoping you don't super love it) it doesn't do your room justice. The monkey one is really more traditional to me and I like it a little better. And, from your posts, you run more contemporary. How about a paisley? I have a fabric that I picked out (I won't be offended if you hate it) that I finally ordered. I think it would be pretty in your room, too. I like that it's a linen, so you get more texture. And, it picks up the colors you have in your room. I guess it's an updated jacobean fabric. I thought it was just a floral. I learned it from the gurus here. :) Here are a couple more- just quickly looked on their site. I can't load up the rest. Sorry. They have a paisley that I thought would be pretty. http://www.fschumacher.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?sku=174800 As a rule (supposedly), you're supposed to have the bottom third the second fabric. At least, that is how I was told. I prefer curtains to romans or shades. Normally, i'd put a roman or a grass shade underneath, but you'd lose the top windows due to the shade. So, I vote no on those. I wouldn't cover up the top windows at all. So, just a vote for curtains. And, I vote for figuring out which fabric you love the most and going off of the colors in there. :) You won't be happy if it's not right! Good luck! Don't have the blinds down and then say there isn't enough light. Drapery panels will be better for this room and if necessary blinds that pull up instead of down. Any mirror should be at either head of the table or 90 degrees to the window to catch the best light., but it looks like there is no room at one end of the table for anything.

Thank you all for your support.. I am disappointed but not crushed. I think I would be much more upset had I not gone through so much trouble with my iron bed-- which was a similar price and did not meet my expectations when it arrived. For the cost, I don't want to be disappointed. I appreciate that the seller gave me the opportunity and, in fact, guided me to pass on the sale.

I have no doubt that I will find a table..

(Parma, sorry you are having problems emailing me. I did try some test emails from my other accounts and they all came through. Of course, that's not a great test because it seems to be an intermittent problem. I am getting some of them from you. Maybe it is because you are responding to forwarded messages?)

I thought I was more or less ok with the loss of the table--but I have been completely uninspired as I look for a new table.

I did find a steel table I love (did you see the one featured in cote de texas a few months ago?) but I don't think a steel table sounds warm and inviting for the winter months.

I may need to walk away from the DR for a few weeks. :(

I feel for you. That's such a gorgeous table top, I want one too! Seriously. I really had been thinking of putting a "regular old" mirror on our dining table--but your antiqued mirror is just too beautiful.

I did some sleuthing on the internet and did a search for eglomise. The site I've linked below popped up, and maybe they can do something for you. Also, please note that I did not check their prices.

Please let us know what happens!

Thanks for sharing my pain LOL... Anele, I appreciate your inspirational vibes-- you have made big improvements in your DR. Let's hope some of your magical touch comes to me too.

Meg, wow, they sure do have some interesting pieces. The look is more contemporary than what I am going for, but I would imagine they could use the technique to age a mirror too. I dont have a lot of time to restart my search right now when the time is right, I am sure I'll find a great replacement. I'll check out the possibility of other mirror tops too.
