Look back near were the conductors enter the box. Cleaning the conductors (A vacuum works well) can also help reveal their color. Many of the older cloth covered conductors use rubber insulation. This insulation can be very brittle and can fracture when the wires are moved. Sometimes the cloth layer holds it in place despite the fracturing. Heat shrink tubing can be applied over both bare wires and fractured insulation to restore insulation integrity....See MoreNo power to switch and outlet after replacement attempt
Comments (5)okay so your basic switch layout is going to involve two black and two white wires. you join the white wires and the black (hot) wires attach to the switch. what the switch does is break the flow of current going through the hot wires. i am a little troubled by terms like "...power the switches" because switches aren't really powered, they are what break current. i am unclear on where you are getting these wires from. please provide a new description of what you're working with. this stuff isn't hard, but it does take some background to know what does what and also appreciation that you could kill yourself....See Morecan a light switch be turned into outlet and light switch?
Comments (8)"There is always a hot wire going to the switch and in the switch box." Gee - you may want that to 'always' be the case - but it is definitely NOT always the case. What is ALWAYS the case - is that a regular light switch (not a three way, four way, etc.) is always in Series with the light. Yes, it would be good, to have the HOT controled by the switch... but for example, years ago - I got zapped by a light - because the Hot was gong to the lamp, neutral to the switch... and I was an idiot and hadn't killed the power at the breaker... Anyway - in a bathroom which has its only outlet on the lamp - it seems a good bet to me - that we are probably dealing with knob & tube wiring... I have seen some wierd electrical in my days... so I try not to assume. But adding a GFCI outlet; is definitely something the average person can do - after some careful reading....See MoreReplacing on/off switch for gas fireplace w/ combo switch/outlet?
Comments (7)Well, all it not quite lost. If there is 120V going to the fireplace (most likely is the case) and you can use something else to turn on and off the fire place (many come with an optional remote control or such), you may be able to abandon this as a remote control for the fire place and reuse that piece of wire to feed the receptacle. Of course, it's probably as easy to run a proper receptical. If you can get in to the attic above or craw/basement below, it's not even likely to be beyond the means of a competent DIYer....See Morespencer_electrician
