adult stepfamiliese - how to become a family again?

Hi,

I've read through several posts and would love to hear back from many of you (especially the stepmoms and adult stepchildren). I'm so happy to have found this resource, even though none of us are experts.

I'm an adult stepdaughter (30 yo) and my father is a widower who remarried a much younger woman (late 30's). It has been a difficult adjustment for our family because we live far apart, the wife is not very communicative, dad is emotionally obtuse/poor communicator and I think it is just plain hard to be a stepfamily.

My father and his wife have been married for several years and I thought by this point we'd be getting along much better than we do, but it is still painfully awkward to be together in the same place. There are a lot of hurt feelings, misunderstandings and all the general hullaballoo that seems to happen in a stepfamily. I only know this from reading your posts - thanks for sharing!

I think my father still has a lot of issues and concerns about our family - for example, he worries that we will stop visiting him or including him in our future. I'm not sure why he believes this except that it has been a difficult adjustment for me and my sibling to his new wife. Long story short, I'd like to help our family heal and begin a new chapter with his new wife where she feels comfortable and included. She still tries to avoid meeting people at family events because she feels it is not her place? I'm not sure exactly, but she tries to minimize her presence around others instead of acting as if she is part of our nuclear family. My sibling is still very resistant to her presence.

My inclination is to pursue family therapy, but we live so far apart we'd only have time for 1 session before they'd have to leave and it may open more wounds than heal anything. (e.g. we'd all start saying what we really think instead of maintaining our current civil exchanges)
