Code Requirement for Receptacle in Firebox for Gas Insert

We are converting our wood burning fireplace to a gas insert with ventilation fan. I'd like to know the code requirements for adding a receptacle in the old firebox and what the best method of wiring this into the existing wall circuit would be.

There are plastic junction boxes on each side of the fireplace now with NM wire. I'd like to tap off one of these boxes and run into the firebox. The walls are bare so I can do whatever is required... I'm thinking maybe one of these plastic junction boxes could be changed to metal and then run "BX" cable to a metal box in the firebox.

Thanks for any suggestions.
