So here's my dress...it's wrinkly from being just pulled out of the box...and I need a crinoline...and I wore a strapless bra that I shouldn't have. Other than that...here it is.

I'd like to remove the train, I thought about making a wedding album cover out of it. FMIL suggested I cut it off after the wedding, but I'm not a fan of bustles. I might go with a french bustle though...I think they are very pretty.

DLM, I think that you will never be sorry to have kept them. To keep them from being seen as "clutter" after you're gone, get them them properly packed and stored and then pick the right person to have custody of them for the next generation. It may be one of your DIL, or if you have nieces or nephews, perhaps one of them. I'd choose someone who appreciates family stories, and who would be a good - and generous with access -custodian of shared family history. In my DH's family when I got engaged there was a small family gathering,(mostly female) and the wedding dresses and some other family wedding memorabilia were sort of the organizing theme for the party. It was a great way to meet my some of my in-laws-to-be and feel included in my new family's story, Since my engagement diamond was re-set from an family piece, everyone wanted to see it in my new ring. It was a lovely tradition and I plan to do it when my nephew finally settles on a bride - even if it seems a bit old fashioned. What else is an elderly aunt for? Many times I hear people express a bit of envy that in my family and in my DH's we have so many "heirlooms" from generations gone by. Some things have by sheer old age have now become valuable, but most still have only modest monetary value. But they all tell the stories of the family - sometimes in modest circustances and sometimes not. Each succeeding generation chose to take care of these items and pass them on,probably always at some cost of in terms of time, trouble, or even perhaps the forgone value of selling them. This speaks volumes about the values cherished and passed down in our families. And that alone is worth the effort preserving these things as totems of the clan. maxibella, the short answer on standard numbers of open houses is: there aren't any set standards. the longer answer is: IF you have an aggressive Realtor, open houses should be something they look forward to. The down side is- due to both Buyer and Seller agents, the sitting OH Realtor loses much control of the Open House. Buyers waltz through stating "they" have a Realtor, and whomever is hosting the Open's hands are tied. The listing Agent must follow up with the Buyer's Agent and well, it's the follow up on not only OH's but showings that grades a Realtor. OH's are great for hungry start up Realtor's so,,,,have as many as you can. It says Nothing about being desperate; let no Realtor ever state that. OH's benefit Realtors....period. Why? because unfortunately Open's normally won't bring the sale, but they can offer potential Buyers to the sitting Realtor. which brings me to igloochic :) I was hoping you'd respond because you are normal. Isn't that great to hear!? On a broad sense it's true that we humans make lists of likes and dislikes and then we compromise. see,,, normal. so, when it comes to buying that largest purchase most of us will ever make,,,,at decision time all kinds of priorities change. you like me won't buy that Bi-Level, but we might just settle on baseboard heat. ha-ha you get my point. best to both of you.

Now I understand where you are headed. My suggestions will not be matchy matchy and are pretty eclectic in nature. So, hopefully you will get some ideas you may not have thought about. Let's start with the DR. Drapes: I like dramatic so, if the rug has bronze that would be my first choice though there is nothing wrong with gold. I like plain simple drapes. I think drapes like blacksplashes should not be a focal point of a room when you have other beautiful things going. They should help frame the room like the color on the walls do. You may not need pinch pleated drapes. It would save you money not to have the pinch pleats. You need to decide if you want to run them from ceiling to floor or with a rod (I saw some beautiful rods at Calico Corner's. I think JCP carries Kirsch hardware also) above the window not from the ceiling. Dining table: I notice most people select wood to use with oriental rugs. I am working with a designer for my family room and breakfast nook and he just taught me a good lesson: Print rug-glass table, solid rug-wood table. He said you want to show off the beauty of the rug at all times from every direction. They do make some very large glass tables that you can use with 2 wooden pedestals for support or a great square base. If you are having a lot of guests for dinner like Christmas than you can add a folding table and use the same table cloth. This is just a suggestion. You can use wood but I always like to share new knowledge when I learn something. I still like crystal for chandeliers in dining rooms. In this case I would use crystal with some funky lamp shades to add a little fun into the room. You may find these at Home Goods or on line. I would try leopard for shades. It's hard to visualize if this will work without actually seeing it in person. Maybe someone will photoshop. Do you know the size of the table you want to use? I also think you may be able to find dining room chairs on ebay or a used furniture store that might be in decent condition or you can buy them new. Remember the chair wood does not need to match the wood of the table. There is more interest created when they don't. Here is another idea for chairs: you can used entirely different ones for the head of the table. Actually, I am pretty good at decorating eclectically. My friends are always looking for my eye. The designer I am working with always says to me "what do you need me for". Well, he is a great buffer between me and my BF whom I share my new home with. He has made my life so much more easier and is worth every penny. I am also learning alot about decorating from him.

I like the lamp and the first picture with the roses and the roccoco frame. And how about also a collection of "smalls"...say a little tray...in silver or EAPG with pretty things on it....perhaps a pair of kid gloves....an old calling cars....maybe an antique pair of opera glasses....or go the other way a lovely pipe tamper....a few old keys.....maybe a small antique porcelain clock?....they could even go on a doily with a tatted edge....perhaps an old book and a pair of antique glasses. My first thoughts were a vase of silk flowers, 3 mis matches silver, brass or glass candle sticks and a verticle mirror hing off center. Nifty chest! Linda C

I'd definitely skip the crinoline with a perfect figure like yours! I'm sure it would be gorgeous either way, but I'd vote to keep the long, smooth vertical line (and not have anything scratchy and noisy underneath). I also like your idea about removing the train. It's beautiful, and it looks so elegant in formal portraits, but I think trains are sort of a nuisance when they are down, and I have seen too many brides have to take a break to re-bustle because the bustling fell down. Here, too, though, it's a no-lose choice: either way will look great.

Andrea and Gellchom, I don't want a large crinoline (I actually didn't want one at all) but the dress kind of falls in the front, at the bottom of the skirt it curves in at the centre and we couldn't fix that...perhaps if I get it hemmed it wouldn't do that anymore. I was only thinking of getting one that's more of a slip just to straighten out the bottom. It only just occured to me that hemming it (it is a little long for me as I was already wearing my shoes) might fix the problem so I will look into that.

Gellchom, I also have seen the train have to be re-bustled and have no desire to have to do that.

yep, I see, too. I was picturing one of those really wide ones. I think you are talking about a crinoline that doesn't make the skirt poof out, just sort of holds it neatly while keeping the vertical line. Is that right?

Wow, it really is SO pretty! Isn't this fun?

Gellchom, yes, I'm talking about just enough to fill out the bottom of the skirt...I don't want any poof. The skirt has a built in crinoline from the knee down, so I'm thinking of just adding another one to that to hold the bottom out. My friends mom has made wedding dresses and would be able to do this for me very easily apparently.

Boo, I love all the beading at the back and the laces.
