What do you think of this backsplash idea?

I took a break from all things kitchen once I was 98% done but I really want to get the backsplash started. My cabinets are Maple Toffee Shaker, granite is Verde Peacock, natural wood floors, brushed nickel hardware.

I love the look of glass subways but I fear it will be a bit too contemporary for the rest of my house. So in keeping with the natural warm look I have now, I was thinking of doing about 85% of it in 3X6 polished stone in a natural color and intersperse it (about 15%) with either a glossy or a matte glass 3 X 6 in sage. What do you think of that idea?

Below is sort of a mock-up that I did on that Arizona Tile website tool that someone here recommended. Picture isnt too clear but it will give you an idea of what Im talking about.

I like it. Can you post a picture showing your cabinets and your granite??

Sure...I should have done that in the first place!!! I also moved the tile picture to the same album....

lucymullis-looks like we will have 7 horizontal rows of the subway on the 2 walls. Will lay out a wall first before install. Plan for now is to use the burnt umber, the clear, and the coral/peachy glass tiles maybe in the 3rd row up from the counter-haven't decided how far apart. Another option would be to just randomly put in the glass tiles anywhere in any of the rows of subway. Nothing definite yet in terms of design on those 2 walls other than the materials we will use. We must have made at least 50 different trips to various places, returning to some places several times. My DH was tired too of all the running around but all of a sudden-one day-we found what worked so hang in there.

Harrietomeowner, could you please tell me the name of the marble subway tiles you are installing? Are they the lansdale from the tile shop? Are they also known as "Botticino"? When I went to the tile store, they told me that there is not such a name "lansdale marble". They say that is the name the tile shop used on that particular marble color. They suggested "botticino" might of being the one that is on line because of its creamy white color. I love them!! I think they will look gorgeous on your kitchen. I have similar colors, maple medium autumn stain cabinets, and a creamy granite called Ivory fantasy. I'm considering marble subway tiles as well and the ones that you posted lying down on your counters and the mock up created look perfect. Please post pictures of your backsplash when ready...

Hi. I love the calacatta marble. We're doing that for our island countertop & I just love the creamy white/grey/caramel. I think either of the last two you showed would look fantastic in your kitchen. The subways we are using are by Horus Art, Tiffany series in the bianco with a crackle glaze. ("borrowed" from garden webber Willowdecor!). Also-I'm happy to hear that your island is cherry. I originally wanted alder because of the way it took stain, but my cabinetmaker said it's too soft with young kids. I love the stain on your cherry, so I'm relieved.

That totally makes me dizzy! I'm sure it's a personal preference thing so definitely go for it if you love it, but it seems like it will take over.

I like it, but I think I like the FUSION CAMELLIA tile you had earlier. Hmm.

I like the idea a lot and particularly like interpersing some sage. What I would be careful about is making sure the natural color is not too dark. I really like the natural paint color that is there. The natural color in the tile looks darker. I think with a dark granite, I would go lighter in backsplash.

teaforwendy: I KNOW!! I was going with that but then my girlfriend came over with these samples of the 3X6's and I fell in love with those, too!! Hmmmm.

doraville: the wall color is Coastal Path by Ben Moore and is actually a green/tan.
The tile is definitely lighter than the wall paint. You're right..I didnt want to go with a dark backsplash because of the Verde Peacock....

I'm going to disagree with Doraville on this style question... I prefer all stone for the backsplash. Maybe with a liner or a dark accent tile every so often?

If Im correct, I think Doraville is saying she likes the stone but is suggesting that I dont choose a dark stone because of the dark backsplash. I agree, I want a light stone.....I am going to intersperse it with a glass subway tile...

I went to the tile store today and am looking at a light-tan honed travertine 3X6 with a 3x6 glass subway to intersperse but probably not a sage color. Im thinking maybe a khaki color which is what my walls are....Do you think that's too blah? My kitchen opens up to my family room which has "tomato" accents....Maybe a "tomato" tile?? so confused!!!
