Well thank God school ended for me last night.... I now have some time to catch up with everyone here...as well as with MYSELF!!!!!!! A lot of you have been so helpful to me and I've not had the time to be helpful to you.. I apologize and will now try to send some advice...especially to MIStepMom...I begged her to update and then I never said a word.
Anyway, I'm having a bit of trouble with my fiance's parents. They really want to have a relationship with his ex...and although it bothers me, I respect their need to do that. She is the mother of their grandchildren and a former member of their family...why wouldn't they want to stay in touch... However, his mother hasn't really handled herself too well. She often upsets me... She continually goes over her memory bank of his ex and proceeds to tell me stories I don't want to hear. I removed trinkets from my home that she had given to them when they were married and she wanted to know why and where I put them. She called me by the ex's name 5 times last visit. She gives me details of things that I don't care to know....and she just doesn't let it go. They have been nice to me, don't get me wrong. They've been kind...send me little cards, gifts on holidays, take interest in my schooling etc. They just sent me a Mother's Day card... They have appeared to be very accepting...but when they come for their visits (twice a year) they act weird and uncomfortable....and then say and do things like I wrote above....or variations of them... And I am so fed up with it and it hurts. My fiance supports me 100% and is trying to help them see what they are doing.
1 week ago his mother called the house and ended up on the phone with me. In the course of the conversation, she told me all the times her ex-daugher in law would visit her with the youngest when he was a baby...she gave me a few details and then proceeded to ask me when she was going to see the ex when they were here. I told her I didn't know...she continuously asked me, will I see her there, or here, or how about then.. I finally told her that her son and I wanted to enjoy our time with them and that maybe she should set up her time with the ex separately. She did not react well to that... She thought she would see her at T-ball and I informed her that we don't go to these functions together, we are separate... Then she told me that I just have to deal with it...that the ex is the mother of her grandchildren and I just have to deal with it!! I explained that I wasn't trying to keep them away from her.....but she just didn't see the point I was making. I then gave the phone to her son, which is what I should have done in the first place! He finished the conversation, supported me and then when he hung up said that she was upset and would send me an email later....she felt bad that she offended me etc.
Instead, I sent her an email....and I told her how I felt.... I was very positive and had my shrink read it to tell me what she thought...even she thought it was positive.. Well, it caused problems.... Son and parents had an argument...they felt under attack by me and feel that I am trying to control them. His father insists that he will not be controlled and that we are a family and it is not for us to decide who is in the family and who is not. Oh but I diagree...and so does my honey... Anyway, they are their other offspring about 2 hrs away and are coming in tomorrow afternoon. We are going to have a talk about things when they are here-try to come to some sort of understanding. It is obvious they are having a hard time adjusting...even though it has been three years. They live in IL and come out here twice a year. I get the impression that things don't bother them until they have to come back here and face it. We want to help them get through it, but they also need to admit that they are having a problem and acknowledge that even though they are having a hard time, they still need to consider my feelings etc.
Things happened fast really....to them at least. One visit they were here and they were married, the next visit they were separated, in different homes, and their son was with me. That's gotta be tough... They also know how our relationship began...and it causes them to feel really bad for the ex-wife....who is now very happy and leading a very different life-the one she wanted. Well, anyway, I just wish this could be easier. My fiance and I are okay...we've maybe had one argument since them because we were so tense, but mostly we are dealing well and feel we have grown a lot closer since all this started... but truthfully, it makes me feel like I am not a part of this family....that I am not truly accepted...and that they don't want me here. It's not a good feeling to have.....and having them in my home makes it very difficult for me. I would rather they not be here...but it's his parents....
Anyone ever go through this??? Does it ever get better?
