California Weather

Hello - We decided to take a Globus Tour which starts in SF, then Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe and winding down Big Sur and ending up in San Diego (12 days in all. We will be arriving on September 25th. What is acceptable to wear at that time of year? I hear SF is really chilly and we should dress in layers as we go down the coast. Are white slacks acceptable in Sept/Oct? Any suggestions? Thanks.

My DH used Globus in Europe and really liked it. End of Sept should be cool, but not cold. You might run into some fog, I would take a lined wind breaker, light sweaters and some sort of scarf or protection for your head. Usually they don't get much rain that time of year, but with this crazy weather this year, don't count on anything. Just personally, I don't like white slacks, but I do see alot of people wearing them, especially the senior citizens. One problem is they do show the dirt easier, and getting on and off the bus, doing the tours etc they will show spots easy. You might think more the blues/greens/beiges. Lake Tahoe could be quite chilly as it is around 6500 feet. But then, most of the time you will be on the bus or in buildings, unless you have walking tours. SF can be drizzley, raining, foggy and most of the time that part of the state is windy. San Diego even could be quite warm. You also could pack light, and pick up some new clothes as they should be having their end of season sales.

Marie - Thanks so much for your suggestions. I'll nix on the white slacks even though I am a recent "senior citizen". Don't want to give my age away yet. Thanks again. Diane

Oh, this is definitely a most unusual non-winter here in SE Michigan. Yesterday was 45, sunny with only a slight breeze. My Lenten Rose hellebore is blooming its heart out. Salix 'Rubykins' is opening its catkins. My bees were out flying around. Definitely NONE of those things should be happening in early February -- more like late March weather here. And, almost no snow this year, we've had a 3-4 little storms that would drop an inch, and then it would warm up and all melt again in a day or so. I've spent a grand total of 10 minutes this year with a snow shovel doing steps and porches. In a normal year, I would have spent hours and hours plowing and then hand shoveling by this point. North America apparently won in the big global weather craps game this year, whereas Europe seemingly has lost. What the upcoming year brings I can only wonder. Last year was the wettest year ever in Detroit. This year it will probably never rain and everything will curl up and die.

Sunday was fabulous, on the cool side, but so clear and sunny, it's rare to see the sky so crystal clear in May, this is the sort of weather you normally get late in the Fall in Central California and mid-Winter in Southern California. I am actually glad the weather has been cool as I discovered several fireblight strikes in my Asian pear tree. The cold weather stopped the infection from spreading. Plus the lack of heat and late rains has meant that I've not had to turn on the irrigation system yet. There is a thick layer of wood chip mulch in the orchard, and underneath it the soil is soaking wet.

Beautiful blooms palmsprings! I cut most of my leaves off in October due to the inevitable rust but one it dried out here, they all began to leaf out again and almost all of my big trees in the ground are getting ready to bloom and some of mine in pots. We have been in the high 80's. I'm worried the ones in the ground may not open up before the nights turn cold. I saw a forecast for low of 49 next week. I think they will drop the buds. I will bring the ones in pots in so their buds will be protected. Darn it... two are huge NOIDS, 7' tall, 6' wide and I really wanted it to bloom so I could tag them correctly.

Sam, if these are raised beds (or just inground beds), then you do not want to add a potting soil. Potting soils are designed specifically for container growing and are unnecessarily expensive to add to a raised bed or inground garden plus add nothing beneficial to assist with the growth or productivity of plants grown in this manner. So no potting soil, no perlite :-) If the previous owners said the beds were ready to go, I might try them as-is before making any changes. Otherwise, just adding some good quality organic matter to the beds (compost) should provide all the supplementation required. As to what crops to start out with now, you might want to see what locals suggest - try posting that question on the California Gardening forum. In my area (a bit further north), fall planting is restricted to cool season crops - pretty much anything in the cabbage family, greens (the spinach should be fine), some root crops, late peas and onions and garlic. It just doesn't get hot enough this late in the season to encourage the proper development and fruiting of warm season crops like squashes, okra or green beans, which are normally summer (not fall) growing plants. But your climate might be more receptive to these types of crops so check with local growers to confirm.

It is September 7 and very hot here in So. California.....be sure to check the weather before you come - it was 101 in Long Beach a few days ago. I'd definitely bring some things that are lightweight and cool.

September is our hottest month of the year here in Southern California - most definitely check the weather forecast before you leave. I recommend a hat and sunglasses - friends who come to visit from the east coast don't realize how bright it is here - all the time! Definitely a good pair of sunglasses and a hat with a comfortable brim.
