Is this cool weather normal?

The record shows the lowest May temperature for our area is 37 degree. I do recall we had a few years of very wet winter and cool spring. But I can't recall a May with so many cool night. I've always planned my tomato planting basing on the assumption that May means night time temperature over 50 degree. The cool night doesn't hurt the toms but sure doesn't help with some other heat loving seedlings. Can't believe I've been wrong for over two decades.

Does anyone feel their California weather is cooler than usual also? Or maybe this is normal and I just worry too much because I lost a few plants to the late frost this year.
