Change in Weather Pattern To Bring Cool, Wet Weather

At last! A nice change in the weather pattern is supposed to give us a whole week of blessedly cooler, wetter, more spring-like weather.

While enough rain to break the drought may not fall, any rain we get certainly will be a blessing. With somewhat lower wind speed and much, much higher RH values forecast, we should get a beak from the wildfires for a few days as long as people in areas with burn bans continue to obey the burn bans.

I'm just loving the cooler temperatures. It will be nice to have highs in the 70s and low 80s instead of the 80s through mid-90s at our house, and some areas in SW OK have hit 100 or 101 recently, so they sure need the break too.

One tiny request from this mother of a Texas firefighter. Please pray for the firefighters and residents in Texas who continue to battle wildfires that have burnt over 1.5 million acres in the last 8 or 9 days and have destroyed hundreds of homes and killed one firefighter while injuring other firefighters. As much as we need rain, I'd send every bit of "my" rainfall to the Possum Kingdom Lake area west of Fort Worth if I could. They are not expecting the same weather relief we are getting or as much of it, and are very concerned they'll have 'dry thunderstorms' in which lightning strikes start more fires.

Enjoy this cooler weather while it lasts because you never know how long rainy weather will last around here. Be alert to the development of severe T-storms which always seem to accompany rainfall in the spring.

It appears we don't have to worry about the traditional Easter Freeze, but it sure does look like the Easter Bunny may get wet.

Sunday was fabulous, on the cool side, but so clear and sunny, it's rare to see the sky so crystal clear in May, this is the sort of weather you normally get late in the Fall in Central California and mid-Winter in Southern California. I am actually glad the weather has been cool as I discovered several fireblight strikes in my Asian pear tree. The cold weather stopped the infection from spreading. Plus the lack of heat and late rains has meant that I've not had to turn on the irrigation system yet. There is a thick layer of wood chip mulch in the orchard, and underneath it the soil is soaking wet.

Oh Annette! That is so beautiful. All the purple-lilac colors in the Fuchsia flowers and your house create a cool and welcoming place. Can I come sit under your pergola with you? It is just gorgeous! That's what I want. I just love all those Fuchsia baskets. That is dazzling! What else do you have growing around that area and along the path to your house? The temps here today were only in the low 80s, but it was very humid and muggy, so it felt hotter than it actually was. Then the clouds rolled in - huge, billowing, dark thunder heads that boiled up high into the atmosphere. I love watching them build like that. The sky grew very dark, like dusk, and it suddenly poured down heavy and hard. Wow! Glad I set those five gallon buckets out on the patio to catch some of that rain. No. No. No. No. No. NOOOOO! This cannot be happening. We've only warmed up in the last three hours. I have been refusing to look at our local forecast because if something more is coming, I don't want to know about it. I think those of you further north will 'get it' from this cold front, and I guess we might feel it some down here, but I don't think our chances of precip are high for the next two days. The birds are feeding heavier today than yesterday, but that's because the snow has mostly melted and uncovered the bird seed knocked out of the feeders and onto the ground. Judging from the amount of bird seed on the ground, and the telltale hoof marks, I'd say the deer tried to eat bird seed from the birdfeeders last night. I know the forecast models are showing 'yucky' weather a week or so out from today and we don't want it here. Our ground hasn't really dried out well since at least mid-December. I'm going to be growing my onions hydroponically (unintentionally) at this rate. I thought of your sand and our driveway (newly redone after the last big storm) a couple of nights ago when a friend of ours said he couldn't get out of his driveway beacause apparently "somebody has removed all the gravel from my driveway". (I thought he had sandy soil like yours, but maybe his driveway has underlying clay.) That somebody would be the last 10 months of heavy rainfall and snowfall! LOL It really isn't funny when rural driveways and dirt roads are too wet to be driveable, but it happens and it has happened a lot this year. I want a REAL change in the weather, so can we request something like...um.....how about daytime highs in the 60s and 70s and lows in the 50s and lots of sunshine. I overseeded my crappy lawn which had a ton of damage from crows and skunks digging up chafer beetle grubs in very early spring. I overseesed with a fescue/rye/bluegrass blend about a month ago after spreading a thin layer of top dressing that had sand and manure mixed in. I applied starter fertilizer a week and a half later and it's all looking great right now. Has almost filled in the bald patches. I have had some weeds, mainly mouse eared chickweed but have so far been able to keep in check with hand pulling. I say go for it. You can always do a more ideal repair in fall as I plan to do. Here's a before and almost after. Still some filling in to do but so much better. First photo about a month ago second and third photos from this morning and last night. I plan to follow up with some alfalfa or soybean meal soon and stick to organics if I can. You wont find soybean or alfalfa at big box. Try an agricultural supply store. I'm in the city and have to drive to burbs to get mine.

No rain at our house yet, but the huge break in the temps is much appreciated. At dinnertime tonight, the weather guy said our temperatures was something like 25 degrees cooler than it was at the same time yesterday.

Speaking of the wildfires in Texas, the lighter winds and higher humidities in Texas today helped the firefighters battling the Possum Kingdom Lake area fires begin gaining some ground and I think they have about 25% of the fire contained. This is the 7th day for that fire, and the first day that the fire did not grow larger.

In sadder fire news, the firefighter from Cactus, TX, who was injured in a fire in west Texas earlier this month passed away this morning as a result of his fire injuries. He's the second firefighter line-of-duty-death in a week in Texas. My heart aches for his loved ones.

There is rain down near San Angelo and I hope it rained on the huge wildfire they've been battling there for a week or more. Now if only that rain would head straight to Possum Kingdom and Palo Pinto County in Texas, and then swing up into southwestern OK to rain in the area where they've had bad wildfires and evacuations. After that, maybe the rain could head to central OK and rain there. Think I'm expecting too much from one line of thunderstorms?

My son is at work at the fire station today and has been in touch with the D-FW firefighters who went west to help at PK and says they are "having fun" fighting the fires. (rolling eyes here) I respect very much the work they do, but cannot for the life of me understand why they think fighting fires is fun.

Rain down around San Angelo? OMG....it must be an Act of GOD! That area gets so little. My BFF of 35+ years is from that area, only in the last few years transplanted to Mississippi. I've gone thru many a gardening season with her, struggling thru that area's droughts. You know, they say the devil lives under that section of Texas, and because of my NUMUROUS trips there, I believe it.

So very sorry to hear of the 2nd fire-fighter loosing his battle. I'll joing you with my prayers for his family. Just breaks my heart...

I'm not going to be selfish and pray for rain just here, I'm going to pray for rain there too. The rivalry isn't about football now, it's about being in this whole dry mess together. Mother Nature has just GOT to get over it!

Dawn - also keeping DS in my prayers! I KNOW he's getting really, really tired.

Paula, My DS didn't go to the Palo Pinto/Possum Kingdom area. They sent their crew on a day he wasn't working, but he has stayed in touch with them. He said they finally got to take a shower and sleep after 2 days out fighting fires and they wanted everyone to know how very kind all the local residents, volunteers and folks at the Red Cross shelter had been to the firefighters. Anything the firefighters need is being supplied.....clean undergarments, socks, lip balm, etc. I think DS would dearly love to be out there at the fire. He said the airport sent a brand new $900,000 fire engine that wasn't even officially 'in service' yet. It is a huge truck and should be able to help protect a lot of structures.

San Angelo is in such a beautiful, albeit rugged and dry, part of the state. I cannot imagine being a gardener and living there. What you can plant there certainly is highly limited! The Possum Kingdom lake area is so spectacularly rough and rugged as well. Unfortunately, many of the trees around PK where the wildfire has grown to about 200,000 acres, are cedar and mesquite trees and both burn like crazy. Luckily, they often regenerate quickly from their roots in some cases after wildfire, because it takes a certain rugged type of tree to grow out of that limestone rock.

Parts of the Possum Kingdom Lake/Graham area got about 1.5" of rain last night, which ought to help in the areas that received it, but most of that area didn't have rain.

We had a raging Tstorm last night that dumped a half-inch of rain here, but we had lightning and thunder for hours. The storm-line moved through at 60 to 70 mph so I bet I have more tree limbs and leaves on the ground today, and probably more plums on the ground as well. The wind has brought down so much fruit in the last couple of weeks that I'm beginning to think I won't harvest any fruit as well. (Guess the poor harvest is to balance out last year's amazing fruit harvest.)

There's a slight chance of severe weather tonight, so I guess the best we can do is simultaneously hope that rain falls for everyone but that the severe portion of the weather fails to materialize.
