Oh, this is definitely a most unusual non-winter here in SE Michigan. Yesterday was 45, sunny with only a slight breeze. My Lenten Rose hellebore is blooming its heart out. Salix 'Rubykins' is opening its catkins. My bees were out flying around. Definitely NONE of those things should be happening in early February -- more like late March weather here. And, almost no snow this year, we've had a 3-4 little storms that would drop an inch, and then it would warm up and all melt again in a day or so. I've spent a grand total of 10 minutes this year with a snow shovel doing steps and porches. In a normal year, I would have spent hours and hours plowing and then hand shoveling by this point.

North America apparently won in the big global weather craps game this year, whereas Europe seemingly has lost.

What the upcoming year brings I can only wonder. Last year was the wettest year ever in Detroit. This year it will probably never rain and everything will curl up and die.

Up here, while warm (mostly because of warm night time temps), we still have snowcover (a few inches) and endless days of fog and no sun. Not typical of this area. We usually see a lot of winter sun, with cold morning temps (lots of mornings below 0F). Just not happening this year. We aren't quite halfway to normal for snowfall, but March can always be snowy and we usually see a little snow in April. In terms of plants, nothing is happening...which is probably a good thing.

Things still quite dormant here in Northern NM, as winter has only been slightly milder than average (except for a cold and snowy December, low at my house -8). The weather denninmi describes above is pretty typical of winter here, it's unusual not to see 40's with sun for more than a couple of days, and the bees are out quite regularly.

Mountain snow pack is above normal throughout the state, despite the dry winter they predicted. I hope it stays that way...

Lived in So. Ca all my life until 5 years ago. N. San Diego Co.
Had an Anna bloom 4 times in one year. Feb, Jun, Sept then again in Nov. All apples made it except Nov. bloom.
I would not worry. Those trees are so great for So. Ca and if the weather is a little wacky they just change with the temp.
Right now I got a Apricot in bloom( real wacky) and night time temps are 28-38 with the days at 70 will I get fruit only mother nature knows.

The big concern here is that we get a repeat of the 90's where it was warm, and made trees wake up early, then go straight into dead of winter weather. It did a lot of damage to plants.

This is pretty typical bloom time for Anna and Dorsett Golden; it doesn't really freeze hard enough to kill the blossoms and so you're set for the year. Unless you have Dorsett Golden pollinating it the Annas will be really skinny.

Northern New England is not as cold as normal, but enough to freeze the ground and have a stable snow cover, though less than normal and WAY less than last year. Southern New England has unfrozen soil in some areas, little or no snow cover, and many plants are being seen to break dormancy. This will likely be a hard lesson for those who fail to mulch in winter in order to capture and preserve the cooler soil temperature. The danger of fruit trees breaking dormancy prematurely is a big concern for those with predicted last frost dates still 2 months or more away.

I mulch, and mulch does stabilize ground temps somewhat, but the idea mulching will prevent early bloom from this year's mild winter is wishful thinking (at least in some places in the U.S.)

The wood above the ground also reacts to temperatures and if warm enough will bloom regardless of root temps.

I agree with Olpea -- mulching only buys you a couple of days at most. Proper site selection such as a northern exposure with some shade during warmest part of the day can delay something by perhaps a week versus the same species and variety in a warmer microclimate.

The weather in San Diego has been warm since the end of December. My trees are blooming at fairly normal times though. My early peaches and cherries bloom consistently in January every year. Apricots and Pluots in February.
