need help with paint color for basement please

Hi. We have a nice large L-shaped basement with several daylight windows. We've been thinking of painting the walls for a while but have not been able to choose colors. A couple weeks ago, we had a minor plumbing problem, causing some flooding in our basement so now we HAVE to paint the walls.

I need help choosing a paint color please. I really like the color blue. In my guest bedroom, the walls are painted BM Airway 828. I like it but it is a bit too "sweet" looking to me. Not really sure how else to describe how I feel about it except maybe "too pastel" or too "baby nursery". I toned it down quite a bit by choosing accents in varying shades of much darker blues (think navy and blueberry).

I want to use a blue on my basement walls but believe the BM Airway 828 will be too light for that room. Have looked at and painted large swaths of BM Stratford Blue 831. I like it but it appears too "muddy" to me. Do you think going in between these shades on the paint card would be the best choice (BM Harlequin blue 830)? Hubby wants to put a gray shade on the walls but if it is too light it will disappear into my carpeting. I think if it is too dark (we tried BM Hearthstone), it will look institutional. Thanks! Kate

Hi there! I used Arctic Stone in our newly finished basement. It was actually a color I found at Walmart (I think it was a glidden paint chip from there) of all places, while picking up blue painters tape! I took it to SW and they matched it perfectly! I don't have pics at the moment, as we are still moving furniture into the space, but I hope it helps. For me, it was the right amount of color, without looking like a baby nursery.It may be lighter than what you were looking for, based on the colors you mentioned, but I thought I'd put it out there anyhow. HTH

I have 256 watts of fluorescents in four 2-tube T8 fixtures, probably generating almost twice as much light as your incandescents. Standard A19 incandescents have an efficacy of around 15 lumens per Watt, so Artlover has perhaps 6,300 lumens total. It sounds like most of this is in isolated pools, not well distributed. OTOH Jon has 8 much brighter T8 lamps, about 2900 lumens each, for a total of about 23,200 lumens. That's much more than twice as much light - it's over 3 1/2 times as much, and it's probably far more evenly distributed. Artlover's setup would be just the ticket for someone who likes a dark, mellow coffeehouse atmosphere.

I am painting our newly finished basement this weekend and I would love some paint recommendations...I have read some excellent ideas on this forum and would love help/suggestions regarding color, etc. I plan to paint most of it SW Blonde, because most people here love that color. The front part 1st basement picture will be blonde and when you look to the left of the first picture the cabinets will be hung there. Then we were thinking the hallways (stairs and hallway to back room) to paint the SW Navajo White. The back room will be the kids (boys) playroom/workout room with carpet and black padded flooring for the exercise equipment. We were thinking a light blue, maybe SW Windy Blue. We have no idea what to paint the bathroom. It is TINY 32" x 70" we have a small pedestal sink and toilet in there. What color do you recommend there? We are either going to use the tile pictured or a light tan/neutral one. The tile pictured will go around the double french door and in the kitchen area. Sorry no pictures shown but depending on your lighting situation the sky's the limit. Treat the basement like it is your main floor and try to incorporate the same colour schemes and design elements so the spaces feel unified. If you have wainscotting or panel moulding upstairs, make sure that you have it downstairs too. If you have blinds or shutters upstairs try to do that downstairs too. Nothing is worse than having a basement feel like a basement. God love them, kid's messes means happy, rambunctious kids at play. Never apologize. Good Luck with your project.
