Trash To Treasure

What can I do with these?

These were given to me by a retired salesman. I think they are samples from furniture finishes. I have tons! Some even have plants and leaves embedded in them. These are 4"x7". Other designs are smaller. Of course my husband doesn't understand why I want to keep them!

They look like countertop laminate (Formica) samples. Here's a pic of a mural my daughter made using these samples. She cut them with a scroll saw and glued them to a wood board, then grouted them with tile grout. It's held up outdoors for about 5 years, though it is under an overhang, so is somewhat protected from the weather.

4x7 what? cloth, wood ,metal? Some kind of tiles? Do you have a pic? Sound like wood but don't know how you would embed leaves in it. resin maybe? We need ore info! Thanks, Jan

I thought I had posted a photo. What is the best way to post a photo on this site?

The samples are thin plastic,about the thickness of a playing card.

Cacbeary- I may be a little late with this posting, but, better late than never! I don't think it is sick at all for your mom to place a stepping stone at your father's grave. Everyone grieves differently. I think it is a terrific idea. I also think it is better than a bunch of fake flowers that you buy at Walmart. No offense to anyone who does this, I do this, too. Not everyone can have a stepping stone at their grave. Its a very lasting momento. I, for one, think it is very sweet and a suggestion that I may make to people who want to commerate their loved ones. It would also be great for kids to do and then as they get older it will always be there. I'm into it. Kelly

Toilet leaking at wax seal. What can I do until I can get it fixed?

Hi again. The leaking toilet is from the late 50's by Richmond. The two closet bolts that are missing are located at the rear of the toilet. Are there replacement bolts for a toilet this old? The other two bolts look original. I cannot understand why that plumber I hired six months ago didn't replace the missing bolts and didn't fix the movement in the toilet. Shouldn't he have addressed these issues when he was here, since I told him about them? When a plumber comes to fix the currently leaking wax seal, what if he finds that the wood structure underneath is wet or rotted? There could have been a small leak that I didn't know about. Is it the plumber's job to replace rotted wood, or does that require hiring a builder/carpenter? If the wood is only damp, then can the plumber go ahead and replace the wax seal and set the toilet that same day without waiting for the wood to dry? If there is damage/rot to the wood, how long does a repair like this usually take to fix? I only have one toilet in this house. Thank you for any help.

you will be fine, 12 lb is perhaps a bit wasteful but not a lot. I have posted in the cornucop forum recently about this, because I am consistently able to grow large garlic. my routine is far simpler than yours, just raised beds, mulch with leaves (or wood chips if I can get them), and one shot of nitrogen in early spring. I have alkaline clay. I do not add P even though the original soil was nearly P-free (though some P may have gotten there when rotating potatoes into the bed). I do have wood in the beds to promote fungi and repeated mulching over the years has enriched the soil some. I grow about 300 plants per year, for 3 families plus some for friends and replanting.

I see no purpose for an odd portico added to this house it is already a bit off balancewise and IMO adding another element will not work unless you do a complete porch all across the front with supports , tied into the roof and done right.I do not see what would be better inside either . I agree work on the landscaping and save the huge $$$$ this will cost.

I would have kept them too, I see potential!! Have you trolled around etsy?? I can lose an entire afternoon getting inspiration from some truly creative people on there! Hmmm, if they can be cut with some tool (dremmel?) and/or if you can write on them or emboss/engrave on them, I see plant tags, gift tags or card making ingredient.

Cut and drill holes then attach together loosely with jump rings and hang in window or mobile:)

they look to me like counter top finish samples. How about drilling holes at the corners, find large jump rings, and hook them together to make a "curtain" since you have so many, to cover a door way or window.

How about coasters.
Cut to size then glue cork on the back.

Glue to inside of a flat tray. Simple squares or you could do a design with birds and flowers or what ever else strikes your fancy.

Could also do same but use a picture frame and add a wood back and then add side handles to make a tray.

Or you could just do a mosaic and frame it.

Could you glue to stepping stones? They would make a wonderful mosaic design as a walking path through your garden and as vinyl pieces they would hold up well, even in your zone. They wouldn't last forever, but nothing does. Whatever you do they'll need backing of some kind. It's probably pretty thin stuff. They are so pretty. If you have sharp shears cut up the pieces and glue inside an old bird bath in a mosaic pattern. Would make great outside art, too.
