Pesky 1 did 'Halfway'................

.......help you get the garage finished? Or did SIL get the privilidge of the painting?

Mnees next task is the computer desk I brought home the first week of July that has been sitting under the canopy against the front of the garage. I have the room ready for it, except for undoing the computer. I can do that when he decides to bring in the box. Will probably be an all day project for him.

I got it at WM. Put it in layaway & when I went to finish paying and bring it home was delited to pay $40 less. Told him he could have $40 for putting it together for me.

He is a handy man by trade, needs to be "handy" for this project.

Heehee...I got him to do PART of it. What is left can be done later, as I have time. Now we're at the putting it all back stage. MIL was over and I told her that I'd lose DH as soon as she came, and yep...I did. But she motivated him to get more stuff done. Amazing how a mother's guilt can go farther than a wife's nagging!

Wonder if bribing with food would get your puter desk up faster? Tho, I have to admit, I've tried it and it didn't work. Sometimes I have to resort to flattery...as in "you're so strong and I'm just SUCH a wimp, could you PLEASE do this?" Never mind that I can put away a cord of wood without blinking an eye..sometimes you just gotta play that card!

Congratulations on the progress. Must feel good to have teh garage looking better.

My DH is usually good for the small quick stuff. He took pic's of my amayllis while I was out today. It is georgeous, w/ 4 flowers. The stem grew so tall it broke in 1/2 under the weight. Need to measure it see how tall it was. It over shadowed the other one in the pot w/ it. The flowers are white w/ delicate pink tips.
Will put all of my amarylis (6 pots)outside this summer, & in bigger pots, w/ bloom vertilizer. Only the new ones bloomed this year.
I have a bag of peet in my car for DH to bring in. Going try my hand at winter propagating. My rhodo has several broken limbs :( that are still real green, will try them in peet/vermiculite, more roses, silver lace vine &.......

I've tried everything on them, they think egg based spray is a condiment. LOL The neighbors complain if there is an odor (like I enjoy the chemical smells coming from their direction). As they build more houses, the rabbits have nowhere to go. I feel for them but there are literally dozens of them jumping, playing,eating & doing what rabbits do best (make more rabbits) in the unfenced yards. The way they are grinding away at the new clover, I wouldn't think there'd be any room left for my Peas. I'd like to let the dogs in the garden, but I tried that once & they flattened way more than the rabbits ate & didn't catch them. The bobcats mostly stay in the woods, every once in a while someone will see one. Bears, on the other hand, visit the trailer court about a 1/2 mile from me on a regular basis & were on my friend's car 2 streets behind me. Most people around here haven't seen them. I wish they'd eat the rabbits & deer! LOL Linda

Hm, might be them. The photo has red on them but I don't think ours has any red. They are much to large to be yellow jackets. We have only seen a few so far this year so I think they are definately still around. The problem is, aside from their stinging us - our dog is very allergic, as we have recently discovered (after a very expensive vet bill when she was stung twice!) and they look like they are destroying the tree, which is very very large and a main feature in the yard.

What a great question- 1. Mel's mix is quite expensive, so it was probably not the best thing for the budget to build 21 6x4 boxes 2. 6 inches is probably not deep enough for some of the plants- I need at least 4 8-12 inch deep beds next year. 3. No matter how much you try to trellis and contain miniature pumpkins and bush beans, they keep spreading and spreading 4. Beets and carrots did not like my beds at all- I need to research for next year. 5. Fat little squirrels love pepper plants, especially hot peppers. 6. Saying yes to your son as he picks out pepper plants results in planting 70 pepper plants- note, I need to learn to say no. 7. You can overwater Mel's mix- irregardless of what the book says 8. Peppers can be fairly fragile, but they can regenerate- even when they are down to sticks. 9. If you plant on a slope, make sure the bottom of the box is well-drained and that you have extra Mel's mix for the top of the box. Don't mow grass clippings directly into your cucumber plants- mine looked fabulous before this, and then they all died within 4 days. Be patient, most things will start blooming when you have given up hope. Make sure you understand the difference between determinate and indeterminate tomatoes. And, definitely, don't plant indeterminate tomatoes in the bed.

I think you should fully paint a door, and see how you like it, then decide how to finish the rest, e.g. whether to sand the primer coat, apply more primer, use filler, etc. The paint coats will cover more of the grain, and so will the brushstrokes. What look are you going for? If you want a perfectly uniform and smooth, mass-produced look, that is hard (very) to get without a sprayer and maybe sanding between coats. I don't think that is a look I'd aspire to. I think the paintwork in the kitchen should match the paintwork of the rest of the house's woodwork, which was likely brush-painted. You can get a subtler brushstroke using a flowing additive, ask at the paint store. If you paint straight from the can, the brushstrokes will be most visible. If you do decide to sand some more, use a power sander if you haven't already. An orbital sander costs $30. Hand-sanding is the pits. When you DIY, you will be your own harshest critic, you'll see every little imperfection. Step back and look at your finished work like a normal person would - with normal eyes, not magnifying glasses. You'll probably be very happy.
