I think you should look for a very tranquil oil depicting w the ocean or a lake with or without boats for the tub area, the blues and soft tones will compliment the room. Then for the other area I'd look for an outdoor scene, soft meadow with trees etc. which should compliment the tones in the first painting. You can bring a soft tone of brown, blues, whites and soft greens.

You have a magnificent bathroom (I've admired it often on the Bathroom forum!). It's powerful, elegant, traditional, and refined. I would add a work of art that has those same qualities. For over the tub, am thinking of a human figure, by a serious artist such as Da Vinci (in the link below, and the sepia tones would work in your BR) or Botticelli, something in that style. Gustav Klimt has several paintings in the link (use the drop-down menu for his name). One pleasing thing in his work is that he uses some shimmery paints that would add a nice gleam to your room.

If you don't care for a human form, then whatever you choose should still be strong, whether it's monochromatic or colorful.

For over the toilet, IMO a landscape, for depth, or a floral still-life, for simply pretty, would work, but again, let it make a real statement and perhaps frame it, with some shine - gold or pewter - in the frame. Or a photograph of Michelangelo's David might be appropriate and amusing!

I think you should take some time today with newspaper and painters blue tape and play with what sizes and shapes you think will work in each space. They both could use large pieces of art and scale will be everything in the space. (Or in the water closet you could get several coordinating pieces that are square and stack them.) Then go armed with color swatches and your measurements. Then keep open to what speaks to you. You want to make sure you get something you love to look at as you will be seeing them every day...no need to start the morning in your beautiful bathroom with a cringe because the art suits the space, but not you.

From a technical pov, I would be concerned with an expensive piece of art on paper over the bathtub as the moisture could be problematic. Probably less of an issue in the WC. So keep open to metal wall sculpture pieces too. GF got a perfect one for over her fireplace in her FR at an art fair. You might consider tub area could use a large sculpture instead of wall art. Garden statuary might be an affordable way of accomplishing sculpture if you don't want to spend the $$$, or smaller sculpture on a pedestal will work too.

Sable, thanks for describing my room as you see it. For some reason, having some descriptive words in my head seems like it will make it easier find the right art... if that makes any sense(!) I'm going to check out your suggestions.

Annie, thanks for your input and you are absolutely right. I will definitely wait for art that speaks to me since it will make a statement in the room and it will need to be personal to me. I hadn't really thought of garden statuary or metal sculpture but I think both of those are great ideas. I'll keep my eyes open to all options this weekend!
