Need another pep talk.

Ok I'm the one with the big wall of blue paneling. Today I got 2 coats on the ceiling and one on the walls. I had BM mix the ceiling paint a quarter of the paneling color. It's a very soft creamy ivory. The walls are Palladian blue. I have been telling myself all afternoon as I was painting to reserve judgement until 2 coats of paint are on and dried. Tomorrow I will do #2 on the walls i had to stop my neck is killing me.

I'm dissapointed at this point. It looks beautiful in the dormer window and on the west wall. But the east wall ,where the dormer window is looks soooooo dark. The south wall while dark looking isn't as bad. I'm trying to tell myself it's because today there is zero sunshine here in CT it's rainy and gloomy and I have no lighting in the room.

After the second coat and the sun comes out and it's still too dark what's going to happen if I mix say, 1 quart of white with 3 quarts of Palladian? Will I have a lighter version of Palladian or a totally different color?

I'm beginning to think that the same colors in different parts of the country can look totally different because of the sun. And I'm not liking it's color as much as I love it in my bathroom in Florida.

Lighting is everything! I know how hard it is to feel you have made a mistake, but try to stay positive and wait until you have sun light and some artificial light in the room. I have seen lots of Palladian Blue in the Northeast and it's a lovely color. I hope it works out!

It is bad enough to have the paints look different in different rooms, but to have it look wrong in part of the same room is frustrating, isn't it? I had the exact problem you are experiencing in our office; all of the walls sections opposite the window looked so much lighter, you would swear it was a different paint color! But it was all Dunn Edwards Cream Wave.

My solution was not in any tip books I have seen, and my husband thought I was absolutely nuts. but in our case it worked perfectly. We happened to have the next darker paint on the sample fan strip on hand (DE Pale Beach), because we had used it for another room. I painted the too-light walls with the slightly darker color. Even though the broken shape of the room forced me to use Pale Beach next to Cream Wave, next to Pale Beach, next to Cream Wave due to the room indent, it all looks to be the same color now. Whenever we have told visitors where the different colors meet, they admit they cannot visually see them as different, whether lit by sunlight or room lighting!

It was a wacky solution, and I have no idea if BM has a slightly-lighter-than Palladian blue color, but it is something to consider before repainting the entire room. After all, other colors you use in that room may have the same lighting problem.

edit for photo (unretouched): Although a photo does not show what the eye sees, it will give you an idea of the lighting/color challenge of our office. The darker-appearing wall, in the middle of the photo, is actually the lighter paint color in shadow, due to how the light falls in this room.

Hi Three, I know your pain!!! All too well actually! But I concur with just about everyone else who has posted, gardens are perpetual works in progress with good days, bad days, good years, bad years and of course none of us post the ugly pics ;) One wise gardener on Gardenweb (actually she answered me on the organic forum when *I* was feeling hopeless) gently reminded me that the main reason I garden is for the journey, not the destination. Might sound corny to some but I think many on here understand what she meant. I know she nailed it for me! Keep your chin up and know you aren't alone. We've all been there and I'm sure we'll all end up there again, at least for a moment or two but it will pass. Its a cyclical thing;) But isn't it nice to know you can come here and share the good, the beautiful, the bad and the ugly? Michelle

My DIL actually taught me to have a little goodbye ritual if I find I'm dithering about parting with something that I never wear. She is my de-cluttering buddy, and I actually look forward to all the fun we have going through my closet. We give little speeches to clothes, telling them "goodbye" and either thanking them for a wonderful relationship, or that we were never compatible, and it's time to move on. Sometimes I find that all that's holding me back is simple old guilt...guilt about cost, mistakes, waste, impulse buys etc, rather than that I don't want to part with the clothes. Sometimes too, it's having to face up to the fact that life is moving on, .... letting go the leggings, the bikini, the pencil skirt, the halter top, the wet-suit, is having to admit that I'm older, I'm a different shape, my ski-ing days are over, time is moving along. I find that what really helps me too, is to just see the clothing as what it really is... simply fabric, sewn together, with a bit of hardware added on. It's not my memories, it's not my life, it's not *me*. I had a real eye opener one time. I'd hung onto an outfit that I bought for my son's wedding, and that I wore quite a bit afterwards. I found it hart to part with, even though I knew it had "had it's day". A few weeks after I had put it in the give-away bag, I saw the same suit in a shop on the "bargain" rack, and realised that if I was shopping for clothes, I wouldn't have given it a second glance. Now I use that as my standard, if I'm in doubt about purging an item from my closet. "Would I buy you today if I saw you in a shop?"

Greta, I would suggest you try to separate your work time from your home time. Here's what I do. 1. Before you leave the office, leave yourself a to-do list for the next morning. I'm not kidding, this is what I do. Walk out that door and NEVER give the job a second thought. 2. Use your communte home as your unwind time. Relax, listen to music, totally ignore the aggravation of rush hour traffic. Schedule one errand on the way home, to give yourself more unwind time if you need to. For a while I was afraid the drug store guy was going to think I had a crush on him or something, since I was stopping by so frequently! 3. Don't sit down when you first walk in the door. Find non-messy things to do in your work clothes and keep busy for at least 30 minutes. You already had your "un-wind" time so now it's time for quick action. You can start a load of laundry, empty the dishwasher, throw dinner in the oven, do a general pick up, make the bed, swoop off the junk on the coffee table, just find ONE thing in every room that will make a big impact as you walk through. 4. Have at least one "move forward" goal for after dinner. Not a major project, just take care of one task at home that bothers you when it's not done. Check out FlyLady if you haven't already. 5. Before you go to bed, lay out your clothes for the next day. A happy morning is one where everything goes smoothly when you're getting ready. You can do it!

You guys are all wonderful. You enthusiasm is catching. I'm going to head back to BM tomorrow and get some samples of some of your suggestions. I'm a blue person. I can't seem to get away from it! I love all shades of blue. But I would like to think I could try something different and love it. Thank you for your lovely compliments about the paneling. 26 years ago we had a house fire here. We had loving restored this home on a young couple budget, raising 3 children, which means very little money!!so we started over in our early 30's putting our home back together again. When we got to our bedroom my husband said "what do you want for paneling in here?" I took a piece of chalk and drew on the sheathing boards the design I wanted and he built it for me! He even built the doors. Every board is hand planed,it was built in the room in one piece and stood up. Not one single nail holding it all together. I love this little house.
