Personally I love the room. I'm the worst at visualizing so I can't say about creating the same look w/ 2 brown sofa's. I think that it could certainly work though the look would be slightly different.

I like the slightly bone color to the walls & I think that w/ the other brown rms. that you are planning that it will all look smashing. The use of the darker brown sofa's will help pull all of the rms. together.

That room is gorgeous!! It is so pretty because it is monochromatic---all the tones are very similar, layered, and a variety of textures. The pieces have a very fine, "open" look to them. Yes, the wall color is perfect for that room and those furnishings---a very fresh, blank palette that enables the furnishings to do the "work." I also like how he kept the mouldings a similar color.

If you were to plunk two dark brown sofas in there, they would absorb the airiness and become the focal points.

I still think you can create a similar room. I think you would just take those brown sofas and build the color palette from there. Let those be your darkest value, and continue to use lighter tones of it for other furnishings to get that same layering effect.

I agree with texas, but I also think there is a wide range between chocolate brown and the very light upholstered pieces shown in the photo, and you could land somewhere in the middle and still be family-friendly. I'm thinking something in a taupey color or a not-too-light tan. Chocolate brown isn't foolproof because if it's very dark, it will show every little speck of dust.

"we plan to have a family". You don't have that family yet so why not buy a sofa from IKEA that you can buy slipcovers that are made for that sofa? That way you can have the look you want now and add the brown dry cleanable slips when the little ones start to arrive. The brown cover is 87% cotton and 13% polyester, so you could wash it in the washer in cold water with woolite and hang to dry. My uncle used to own a dry cleaners and told me many things that would be washed and how that said dry clean only.

If you want to go with one sofa and the day bed you could buy a (used from craigslist) baby bed mattress and crib and make your own. I'm sure it would be very easy to find white baby bed sheets (and maybe even brown these days) for the cover along with some pretty bolster pillows.

sue, for some reason i am not feeling taupe -- i either like the light or the dark (and i found a really pretty lee fabric for the sofas that i'm into)...

i'm hoping/think as long as i bring lighter/different accents to the room it will tie it together nicely

It won't be the inspiration pic but it will still be nice. I think you should bring in a big range of lighter browns and off whites. Not just the light creams. It will be too much contrast. But if you bring the whole range from cream to dark brown and include many textures, you'll have a great room.

Chocolate sofas will give the room a heavier look and feel, light and airy, like the inspiration pic. To me, 'chocolate' is dark and it could be milk or rich dark : ) Maybe you're thinking a lighter milk chocolate or coffee with cream, which would be more achievable for the above look, with lots of natural light and whites/creams mixed in.

How about latte' color sofas~safe enough for kids, and will still give you that light/airy feeling you're wanting. Bring in the elements of cream/ivory/white in lampshades/candles/throws/pillows and ceramic/pottery accessories. As for something on the windows, basic ivory sheer panels would look terrific. Definitely a monocromatic room.

squirell and patty - thanks so much - I have been studying the fabric over past few days and realize it is a latte rather than chocolate...so I think I'm good. In the meantime Lee has the same fabrics two shades lighter, so I'm waiting to compare and decide before making a final decision. thanks so much!

That sounds like it will fit in beautifully. Your room will look a little more grounded than the beautiful inspiration pic, but you could still get a similar light and neutral feel.
