Comments (23)I don't think it would look weird to paint your kitchen trim white and have the rest of the main floor keep its oak trim... that was my instinct at the top of the thread and then the photo posted by marybeth1 confirmed it. When we moved into our previous 1926 house, the woodwork was all old varnished fir. Everyone was like, oh, I love that trim! But: it was not an architect-designed house (I think it was a Sears kit house, actually) and I didn't love calling attention to the doors and windows, which were not thoughtfully placed, with the dark trim. I painted it all BM White Dove, and suddenly the house was open, airy, and gorgeous... filled with light. It was an amazing transformation. Everyone who'd been trying to convince me not to paint it wound up saying they were wrong. Now, your house is already pretty airy looking, and your trim is lighter to start with.... but my point is that if you want white trim in the kitchen, do it!!!...See MoreCan oak be stained a darker brown?
Comments (2)Stain nwill not work on finished wood. Getting the finish off oak is very difficult because of the grain. Gel stains are basically paint, but still need more than a finish to which to stick. Can what you ask be done? Yes. Will it be easy? No. Will you be able to do it? Depends on how much time you want to put in. Many hours and a huge mess make it less attractive....See MoreGF gel stain success (before: oak / after: rich chocolate)
Comments (8)Thanks everyone. :) Terri_pacnw, I lightly sanded with 220 sand paper and then cleaned very well with Method spray cleaner and a sponge with a soft scrubby side. I think that is more important than the sanding. If you do a search for Celticmoon (garden web poster) and gel stain (search in Yahoo) you will find some great instructions. I also looked thru a bunch of blogs with instructions and took bits and pieces from all of them. I used a microfiber cloth and followed with tack cloth to get dust before each coat. Comments (15)@nicoletouk Thank you! Those examples are lovely - I hadn't thought of cream but that second kitchen is making me think I should look into it. And I had never heard of Samplize. @Michelle K @Susan L I actually think I kind of like the brown? We went with it because it was a really nice line of stoves we would never have been able to afford at full price, but I think I can make it work nicely with the right color combos - and I feel that the brown actually flows in our house where we have a lot of dark original woodwork. . There are no parts to change the color, but I also don't think it's pulling me away from other things that I want necessarily. It did force a choice on the dark countertops, but I'm pro light counter as well. @latifolia Thanks for the feedback! You're right on the paint. I guess I'm not sure whether the finish on FB is actually worth the price tag - I know they have better color depth than most other paint lines, but I've heard good things about the cabinet paint that Valspar and BM sell. And I'm avoiding granite because I honestly just dislike the look - I've never really met a granite that didn't look busy in a way I find distracting. Additionally, our house is historic and has all of the original woodwork, windows, etc - we are trying to reno this kitchen redone in the 90s to better fit with the house's age and character, and to me that means using a natural stone like marble or soapstone....See Morearyno
