Comments (10)I would also recommend going with hardwood flooring. I used to live on the west coast and we always had tile. It's so common there, I didn't really think twice about it, but I also always hated the grout issues and trying to keep it clean was a PITA. After moving to Michigan, we bought a fixer and decided to install wood throughout the first floor. On the advise of friends, we also installed it in our kitchen and I LOVE it. Although it's just my DH & I, the friend who recommended it has 7 kids ages 7-19 and 2 dogs. Her's is the busiest household I've ever seen! And her floor, an oak is doing fine. Wear and tear is important, but comfort should also be something to consider. If you spend any amount of time in the kitchen, you'll immediately notice how the wood is so much easier on your legs and feet. To protect ours from water, I have a rug in front of the sink. Also, after time, those scratches your DH is concerned about will make a sort of "lived in" patina that will help give the room some character and IMHO it will work better with the style you are going with in your kitchen. Another positive about wood is that when you want to freshen things up, you just sand and refinish them. The 3/4 inch planks have a VERY long life because you can do this several times before they need to be replaced. I would really think twice about the tile, after having both I can honestly say, there's really just no comparison....See Moreall I see on GW is white cabinets, but I'll have dark ones
Comments (27)In 1977 we installed very dark wood cabinets in an old lake house we were remodeling to be a year-round residence. I loved them for a lot of years, but by 2001, when we decided to tear down and rebuild on the same lot, I simply couldn't do a dark wood kitchen again! I struggled for weeks until I saw a white kitchen I loved. I'd never considered paint: "Wood should be seen!" but we did the white kitchen and loved it. We moved in 2008 and rebuilt. I would have reproduced exactly the 2001 kitchen if I could have, but neither the cabinets nor the countertops were available. I realized I wasn't tired of white, so we did a different white, and added a charcoal island. The two-tone look may be outdated quickly, but this kitchen is for ME, not for some style guru. Follow your heart! And realize that you'll always be second-guessing . . . because there are so many truly lovely choices out there!...See MorePainting Cabinets White - Should I get white hinges?
Comments (26)Can anybody who has had cabinets painted + new doors and drawer faces tell me the price + approx square footage of kitchen? I had this done in 2012. I live in the SF Bay Area, so my costs are right up there. My kitchen is 10x10 and I didn't change the footprint at all. I got 25 new doors (including end panels), some large, some smaller, 7 drawer fronts, all paint grade maple. Decora shaker doors/end panels and slab drawer fronts. The cost, through my KD was just over $1K. I had everything painted professionally and that was a lot more, $4.3K. All the doors/drawer fronts were done in the painter's shop and the cabinet frames were done in place. The creamy white paint is the catalyzed stuff and has worn like iron. I had a general contractor do the door and hinge installation and other work in the kitchen, so I can't say how much of his fee was just cabinet-related. Initially I thought I'd have everything refaced. My cabs were golden oak. Home Depot sent out a guy to my house and he insisted I listen to a canned sales pitch. I wasn't born yesterday and didn't like his manner or approach. I asked, bottom line, how much. He threw out $10K, clearly uninterested in doing the work. I ended up paying $20K for my entire kitchen, including new quartz counter, backsplash, lighting, etc. Everything but the wood floor, including labor. If I were doing this sort of facelift again, I would do it the same way....See MoreHow to finish white oak floors with walnut cabinets
Comments (30)There is only one genuine Black Walnut. Its grown here in the United States. Lots of companies will import lesser quality species from other countries and generically call it "walnut" Sam Gentry cabinets are genuine Black Walnut....See Morepbrisjar
