Should I get white or dark walnut cabinetry with my oak? see pics
Comments (23)I don't think it would look weird to paint your kitchen trim white and have the rest of the main floor keep its oak trim... that was my instinct at the top of the thread and then the photo posted by marybeth1 confirmed it. When we moved into our previous 1926 house, the woodwork was all old varnished fir. Everyone was like, oh, I love that trim! But: it was not an architect-designed house (I think it was a Sears kit house, actually) and I didn't love calling attention to the doors and windows, which were not thoughtfully placed, with the dark trim. I painted it all BM White Dove, and suddenly the house was open, airy, and gorgeous... filled with light. It was an amazing transformation. Everyone who'd been trying to convince me not to paint it wound up saying they were wrong. Now, your house is already pretty airy looking, and your trim is lighter to start with.... but my point is that if you want white trim in the kitchen, do it!!!...See MoreWas all set on white cabinets/dark wood island and soapstone...
Comments (22)ctnewbie- I have the magazine you are talking about and I love the kitchen you mention. I've saved it as an inspiration picture, too. (I also like the green island on the cover and the copper sink on page 44). I'd call the cabinets medium rather than dark; I've seen much darker cherry cabinets. And, with the soapstone, it has the best of both worlds. I believe it falls in the "timeless category" pretty well except for maybe the largest slate tiles (of the various sizes) for the backsplash. I like the tiles and DH says "less grout". I figure if you're not designing your kitchen for resale, use what you like. I've seen lots of white kitchens here that I really like a lot, but I prefer wood for myself. But I do believe that white is timeless....See MoreWhat do you think of white upper cabinets and dark lower ones?
Comments (9)I currently have creamy white upper cabinets ,two 36"wide uppers have glass doors on either side of my corner sink. ( (Yes I love my corner sink) The lowers are dark stained birch. I have creamy white travertine look porcelain floor tile and St Cecilia granite which has a lot of orangish flecks so I painted my BS pumpkin. I did this house as a flip; we're living in it while we build The House. I picked the two color cabinets because the kitchen has two north facing windows and needed light, and it's smallish at 12X16. I wanted a white kitchen but couldn't convince my DH so we compromised. White on top, stained on bottom. Funny thing is everyone who comes here loves this kitchen! From friends and family to strangers who step in the door, to the plumber to the appliance repairman. All comment positively. So I'm doing a combo in the new house....See More2020 life updates thread + a new project I'll need GW help with.
Comments (33)maire_cate yes it's pretty flat. Everywhere in FL is pretty flat :) It is a major change from our mountain in PA but hopefully should be nice. Some of the acreage is on wetlands so we're trying to figure out what that means in terms of developing and clearing trees to the lake. Hopefully it will be doable (our offer is contingent on the feasibility survey and builder approval). MtnRdRedux, If you move to Winter Park, we'd be neighbors :) I would love to bring all my Amish builders down but alas I don't think that will work as they may not want to travel quite so far, LOL. We're going to do a typical Mediterranean style Florida house I think. Open floor plan, travertine floors, lots of sliding glass doors. We spend 99% of our time here outside so we want to make a really nice outdoor area....See Moreallnewappliances
