It is beautiful...and looks like it was made for that spot in your home. And made for all those wedding gifts to come! Congratulations on the coming wedding and on another successful room. I know how you agonized over the upholstered chair fabric, but moving one out is a good thing. Really shows off the floors. I'm with everyone else on the art. Maybe lowering just a bit would be best. And I also prefer no pediment. It makes the corner look less crowded IMO.

It's definitely now a curio or display cabinet. I think you could use it anywhere. Once I had a large party where I needed lots of tables, so I removed the sofa etc from the family room, and put the dining table with all leaves extended, into the family room. I put a wingback chair at each end. My point is that after the party was over we decided we liked the arrangement so much that we kept it like that, brought in the china cabinet, hung a chandelier over the table, and never brought back the sofa etc. (until we sold the house and had to stage it for sale). We used the wingback chairs to watch TV and never missed having the sofa at all. You can turn any room into whatever you want, if it makes you happy. I say be creative with your new space and make the rooms that work for you. Your "hold-together" room reminds me of my parents 60's ranch that I grew up in. Their hold together room sat between the kitchen, and all the bedrooms, and an open staircase going to the basement. All doors and about 5' of limited wall space. It was a walk-through room to be sure. My mom put my piano in there, there was nothing that could be done with that room. I often think "what would I do, how would I decorate" if I got to move back into that house. How cool that you have this opportunity! Maybe you could turn yours into a grand foyer or "rotunda" of sorts. :-)

We used the top half of the china cabinet I inherited in the library of our former house. I had a plain box base made to hold it, stained it to the same color, and put it behind the small end of an L-shaped sofa, because with its own base, it was too tall to fit in our 8' rooms. It actually started life as a secretary-bookcase, but my great-grandfather, who bought it at auction, only bought the top half, and had a nice but distinctly inferior bottom made for it then. I've tried to find the other half, but with no success. Sigh. So much for its potential value. But I digress ... I put a few groups of nice old books, a couple of pewter pitchers, a plate or two, and some other attractive things in it. I also lined the back wall with a piece of cream jacquard fabric to lighten the whole business. Not sure how well you can see, but here it was: It was traditional in old houses to line the doors of large secretary-bookcases like this one with gathered green cloth to protect the books from sunlight, so you'd be in good company if you decided to put fabric in yours.
