What Do You Put in Your China Cabinet, Other Than China?
Comments (14)We used the top half of the china cabinet I inherited in the library of our former house. I had a plain box base made to hold it, stained it to the same color, and put it behind the small end of an L-shaped sofa, because with its own base, it was too tall to fit in our 8' rooms. It actually started life as a secretary-bookcase, but my great-grandfather, who bought it at auction, only bought the top half, and had a nice but distinctly inferior bottom made for it then. I've tried to find the other half, but with no success. Sigh. So much for its potential value. But I digress ... I put a few groups of nice old books, a couple of pewter pitchers, a plate or two, and some other attractive things in it. I also lined the back wall with a piece of cream jacquard fabric to lighten the whole business. Not sure how well you can see, but here it was: It was traditional in old houses to line the doors of large secretary-bookcases like this one with gathered green cloth to protect the books from sunlight, so you'd be in good company if you decided to put fabric in yours....See MoreChina Cabinet Behind & Flanking Banquette- Help Please!
Comments (6)We had a banquette in a kitchen years ago. DH made it and while the kids were little it was fine but no adult appreciates sliding in and out and being trapped in the middle. We have vinyl seats...I can't imagine trying to use one with no "slide" in the fabric. On the plus side it turned what would have been an eat in kitchen for four into one sitting 6 easily....See MoreHelp with open-concept living room/dining room furnishings
Comments (23)Great, Sally. Hope we didn't overwhelm you with too much information. Most of us do go for a holistic approach to space since no single element exists in a room by itself; they connect through layout, style, finishes, palettes. Sometimes the "problem child" isn't the actual problem, or the only problem, and getting a bunch of alternative suggestions can be useful. Your room is lovely as is, frankly. If you are getting wood flooring, that will definitely modernize the room without your doing anything else. Feel free to post again with all the details at the outset--i.e. not loving the paint, getting wood floors, etc.--then people won't chime in with too much information. Good luck with your new home. You have beautiful pieces....See MoreChina cabinet help
Comments (51)Well, you could stain the table a cherry or mahogany stain. Or you could do something different, and younger, like you! Leave the tables and chairs as they are. Get a marvelous authentic rug, such as a handknotted Persian or woven kilim or nomadic. That will have some bold and bright colors. Find one that you like, and it will give your room and home instant luxe and history. Then pick up one or two of the colors from the rug and carry it into whatever art you out into the dining room. I do think large starburst mirrors are great in dining rooms too, they reflect the beautiful place settings, the candlelight, the guests in their finery, etc. I would keep the curtains a light color, like the color of your sofa, but you can trim the edges with a color in the carpet. You might want to recapitulate some of those colors in throw pillows in the living room, so the house flows from room to room....See MoreBoopadaboo
