Looking for light fixture from the 1960s/70s?

Hi,

(I posted my question in Lighting too--sorry for any cross-posting.)

The house we just bought had the most interesting light fixture in one of the bedrooms, but the children wanted to keep the fixture and so removed it before we'd closed the deal. I am dying to find one like it but haven't had any luck.

The house was built in 1965 but I'm not sure whether this room was redone in the 60s or the 70s. It was on a long chain and was sort of like a very simple upside-down flower shape. It had maybe five wide petals, sort of crocus-shaped. The material of the petals was an translucent pinkish glasslike material, sort of like Tiffany only much much simpler than most Tiffany fixtures. You couldn't see the light bulb through the material, but it definitely shone through.

I saw the same light fixture in another house built right around that time, but can't find replicas or originals online! That one was an translucent golden color. I really liked the character of that fixture, though. Any thoughts?

I know exactly what you mean, and I think it will be possible to find a vintage one. A search on ebay using "stained glass hanging lamp" turned up a few; they are among lots of Tiffany-style lamps, but if you just scroll through the list you'll be able to pick out those that are stylized flowers.

Hi -- I know exactly the lights you are talking about. But, you don't put "lights" into those trees. You put little colored plastic pieces into the holes and there's usually a star on top (optional) -- Then you add a light kit to it and the big bulb inside -- illuminates the colored plastic pieces. Okay -- I found it -- here's the page -- they sell the plastic pieces, the star and the light kit. Go about 1/3 down the page and you'll see the components. My mother would buy the square Tea Cake from Amy's Bakery in Montebello, CA since I can remember. They still sell them. You can see the image of it on their website. Take the 60 fwy, exit Wilcox or Garfield Ave. Go south to Beverly Blvd. and Amy's Bakery is on the NW corner of Wilcox & Beverly. Make sure to grab a number as soon as you enter. Once when I worked in Lancaster, CA a rep came in and dropped off a pink box of little pink & yellow tea cakes in our lounge. I knew exactly what they were but no one else did but the box did not have a bakery name on it. They went for the other box of pastries and needless to say by the time the day was over I had eaten the entire box! (good for me) :) Last time I bought a tea cake from Amy's (in the 80's) I ate the whole cake before we got it home. (with my bare hands) No, I don't do that kind of stuff! It surprised me too! Yes, these cakes are that good. The cake from Amy's Bakery is like a 9x9 and has the light brown colored glaze/frosting on it. In my opinion, it's the best.

it's just one fluorescent light fixture set inside a box that is roughly 2'x6' and 7" deep. Because it's so long & narrow, I think you have to fill it in. Sounds like the box is set in between the ceiling joists? (How tall are the ceilings in the kitchen & living room?) Patching in with drywall is an inexpensive solution. I totally suck at drywall finishing but, lucky for me, I love Spanish knife/ skip trowel texture. It's easy & fun to do and covers up drywall oopsies. So, if that appeals to you, one option would be to patch in, tape the seams and texture & paint the ceiling in the kitchen & LR. Cost would be less than a coupla hundred dollars plus the cost of a new light fixture.

I was also astounded at how expensive some really ugly, small houses were in Toronto in particular. A bunch of these houses are ugly. Just boxes. I'm surprised that these are Canadian houses; I would've thought some of these designs would've faired poorly in snow. P G, my inlaws did a split arrangement out of necessity in the 50s. With 9 people In one of those tiny 1.5 story brick homes up Yonge St, they had no choice but to convert a sitting room to their bedroom for several years! I'm from the country, and when I was a kid we often visited family members -- multiple households -- who had a moderate-sized living room with a bed tucked into the corner, where the parents slept. These were not poor families. Yes, our idea of how much space we "need" has changed. i really like some of the plans in your slide show. The U shaped one, with entry in the middle, courtyard patio ahead, living to the right and bedrooms to the left, looks quite livable, especially as an empty-nester/retirement home. Maybe with one more bathroom, though. I agree that some of these plans look quite livable in spite of their small size. 14-15 handles the problem of one bathroom for three bedrooms handily: the tub is in its own room, with a half-bath right next door. Soak as long as you want, no one's kicking the door for the toilet! Yes, that looks practical -- one room for the toilet /sink, another for bathing -- much more sensible than this modern idea of putting a toilet alone in a tiny closet. My daughter reports that this layout is common amongst her British in-laws.

Check the places that specialize in vintage lighting from the 60's and 70's. You can sign up for updates on some of the sites to be sent to you by email or even Twitter. It might just take some time and perseverance. Or maybe one will pop up tomorrow. You never know with vintage items.

I read that article associated with that photo - a very sweet story. I was afraid the story did not have a happy ending when I started it.

He moved. I wonder if the lamp is stored in the basement of the old place? Hmmmm.

Hello everyone,

Sorry I posted and then disappeared! I was in Europe and just returned--the other places I stayed didn't have internet access. I really appreciate all of your help!!

The light in this link is probably closest but all of the glass was the translucent pink color.

Any other thoughts on where to look?

This one is at Hoyle Lamps, an antique dealer. Same shape, but it looks more white than pink. They're asking $499 for it... I don't know if you want to go that high:

Oooh! Hope you had a wonderful trip! You may just have to check ebay often in hopes of finding one. Most vintage lighting at online stores are very expensive by what I've found. I hope you find it. Darn kids for wanting to take the fixture.

Yeah, $499 would be a bit high for me right now (and probably ever). I did see a few possibilities on ebay, but there's also this one, which is really cool....and it echoes this really cool fixture that's already in my bathroom and is original to the house....
