Comments (41)Do you think another window with shutters will make the front of the house too busy? I hope others will comment with opinions. funcolors...what do you think?? Unless they want/need a window in that spot for interior lighting, like really badly, then I wouldn't bother. Once it's freshened up with new paint and new colors, and landscaping it's going to be fabulous. Again, I'm usually/always in the less is more camp. Don't do the work, spend the money unless there's significant ROI in dollars, function, happiness. And I'm with arcy, the current blue makes quite a statement. :) But with that said, I also love pianolady's neighbor's house. They met a strongly patterned and colored brick with equally strong paint/siding color and the result is balance. If they would have used a light subtle color, all we'd be talking about would be that brick. They also did an excellent job coordinating the roof to the brick - it's a whole package. No one thing stands out and grabs your eyeballs from the curb. The brick in both cases is very bossy. If they want a neutral and not a color, we know from pianolady's example that it shouldn't be too light....See MoreNeed some help with changing 70’s kitchen
Comments (20)I agree, I've seen lots of '70s kitchens, and that doesn't look the part to me. Actually, though I'm pretty far from the decorator type (more the practical type), I think it's mostly pretty nice as is. The backsplash doesn't do anything for me, but it's not obnoxious either. That could go either way. I really like those cabinets a lot, and agree that some modest (not too bold) pulls would spruce them up. For goodness sake, don't paint them, you'll ruin them (IMO). Unlike (probably) most here, I don't object at all to your counters, though I can't tell how worn them might be. If they're in good shape, I'd leave them alone. I see nothing at all wrong with the refrigerator either. I just can't bring myself to replace one that works fine. When it quits working and the repair is too expensive, that's the time to regroup. I'm also not a fan of features like ice and water in the doors -- that's just more stuff to break. And spare us these bloody "smart" appliances. Ugh. I don't know about the windows. Where there are no close neighbors, I like them with no blinds or curtains at all. I love natural light and outdoor views. They make kitchen chores easier, IMO. Hmm, a skylight or two might be nice, or sun pipes. I like the light well enough, but suspect it's probably nowhere near adequate in terms of total lumens. I'd try to match it with a few more of similar style. Can lights are still popular, but I've never liked them where the ceilings are high. They're OK with low ceilings, where surface luminaires can make things feel too closed in. You need an annoyingly large number of them regardless. I'm a big fan of indirect (bounce off ceiling) light for its evenness. Pendants that cast some light upward are good things. I can't tell if there's enough room, maybe not, but you might consider supplemental LED or even high CRI T5 fluorescent strips atop the cabinets. Definitely put LED lights under the cabinets, if you don't already have them. I might change the flooring. That's ceramic tile, isn't it? Ceramic looks nice and lasts and lasts, but just about anything you drop on a ceramic tile floor breaks. I'd go for something a bit darker to anchor the room, but not too dark. Again, though, I'm not a decorator. I am frugal, though. I want anything I do to a house that isn't basic maintenance to return the investment -- or better -- in resale value....See More70s Brick Ranch - Exterior Color Scheme?
Comments (8)So long as you use a ceramic or mineral based paint you should be fine painting the brick. It basically makes the maintanence that comes with painting brick disappear. The house looks a bit dark as is. I would paint, personally. It would help bring this 70s house up to date. Maybe an off white or gray to help it go with the roof. You can also get more creative with trim and shutter color this way....See MoreShould I try to update floor to ceiling 70’s flagstone fireplace?
Comments (12)I think the fireplace is very well done. The main problem is the incremental addition of all the clutter that has occurred. If that were my home, I'd remove every single thing on the hearth, the two lamps, and -- though you probably don't want to hear it -- that television. The tv is a distracting focal point and it's very high placement is terrible from an ergonomic standpoint. Yes, people put tv sets above the mantel all the time, but that doesn't make it a good idea either from a practical or a design standpoint. The placement of a tv for viewing comfort should be approximately at a height where the midpoint of the screen is at eye level or a little higher when you are seated; yours is probably 5' higher than it should be. The only thing I would do to that fireplace is paint the mantel -- maybe a semi-gloss black -- and then consider putting one, nice vase on it....See MoreRelated Professionals
