Another new member and wannabe sew'r

I feel a little out of place but I am a guy who wants to learn how to sew. I have NO plans to make clothing but I would like to be able to hem or repair clothing but my most important need is that I would like to be able to make curtains and other household stuff (pillows maybe) etc. I'd also like to be able to do embroidery work and my line of work is computers so I may want something higher end with a interface to accept computer generated embroidery artwork (Is there such a thing???) Or is a machine that does embroidery differnt than a sewing machine?

Besides looking for local dealers to get lessons from what should I look for in the way of a sewing machine? I'd rather get a better machine now than a beginner machine.

I really no nothing about this. I checked the web and there is a dealer nearby who appears to carry Bernina and Janome machines as well as having a bunch of used equipment

Any suggestions will be very appreciated. Thanks. Bud
