aw, so sweet! I'm not even much of a dog person, but my DD#1 had one that was so great. And they don't seem real sheddy or slobbery, either. I think breeding practices have cycled back to less aggressiveness -- but they do have to be well socialized and trained, right?

Thank you all for his welcome. My3Dogs: As I mentioned to you last week, it was DH's turn to name our dog. I'd named Turk (my all-time favorite dog name from my all-time favorite movie growing up: Swiss Family Robinson). DD had named both Chloe and Sasha. DS, home on leave from Afghanistan, named Ronin. But, I had ultimate veto power on this new boy (LOL). So, this past Saturday morning, DH says to me, "This dog is as black as night. Hmmmm, kind of like the movie, 'Black Knight'. How about Black Knight?'" I replied, "Let's settle on Knight, as we don't want to end up with people (read, DD) shortening it to Blackie. That sounds like something from my grade school reader." So, Knight it is.

Oh what a handsome boy! I love Dobie's. I was just commenting to DH recently how I don't see as many where we live as when I used to live in another county. I saw one a few weeks ago and had to do a double take. Beautiful! Congrats Mom!

Congrats on finding a new furbaby and opening your hearts again. He seems like a great fit for your home. He is beautiful. Knight is a perfect name and I love the story of how it came about. All the Dobies I've ever known in my life were very sweet.

As long as DD doesn't start calling him "Nighty", that really doesn't suit! He's a "Knight", for sure.

Bpathome: LOL! Yes, that would not be good at all, but she may just start calling him that. OMG, I hadn't thought of that one until you mentioned it! She'd started calling Ronin, RoRo.

Chispa: You're right, it was very confusing for him that first few days. It's a requirement of the rescue groups that all dogs need to be spayed/neutered before they can be adopted. Knight wasn't, and so his previous owner dropped him off at the vet clinic one morning to be neutered, and said goodbye to him. Of course, he had no idea what was going on. And then, still groggy and hurting a bit, DD and I picked him up from the clinic late that same afternoon. We had met him once, 3 days before, but just for about thirty minutes. I'm sure his poor confused mind was saying, "Wait! Wait! Stop, you have the wrong dog!" But, with lots of love, gentleness, hugs and cuddles, he now seems to have accepted us as his new family. He's still not ready for us to let him off his long leash while he's outside with us, though.

Lukki: yes, I truly believe that. We'd seen a few other Dobies that we'd hoped would be a good fit for us, but weren't. I'm so glad we waited for the right one to come along.

Oh wow, you're story about his last day with his last family was so unexpected, no reflection on his new family of course, but that's a really traumatic way to leave a dog. Obviously they loved him and took care to ensure he found a good forever home but jeepers...as I look at my girl laying a sleep in her bed I just couldn't imagine doing that.

Very sweet Lynn! One of my Rotties best friends in my old neighborhood was a Dobie named Sky. She was such a nice dog. When I was younger I was afraid of Dobies as a person living across from us had one that they never socialized or trained. Like all pets who have a delinquent owner...the breed can get a bad name. I'm glad I came across a loving responsible owner so I could appreciate what good dogs they are. I try hard to be a good parent to my Rottweiler for the same reasons of wrong perceptions of a dog breed. Enjoy your new baby!

Why didn't we keep his original name? Because it was Igor and we thought it a horrid name. Even the folks at the rescue group thought so. No offense meant to his original owners, but we could not imagine calling him that. Changing a dog's name when you adopt it is very common and they quickly adapt to it. Sasha had a different name. So did Ronin. In my mind, it comes down to what you, the new owners, feel comfortable calling him or her. And, a name that you feel fits their personality. We didn't feel comfortable calling our sweet boy, Igor, nor do we feel it fit him.

I probably would have just called him that, but, easy for me to say since I have never adopted an older dog with a name I didn't care for!! :) I would imagine it is pretty easy for them to adapt to especially since their environment is totally different too!

OMG, Lynn, you are so right! Awful. I'm surprised he didn't petition the courts himself. : ) I didn't know it was common to change a rescue dog's name. Enjoy your new friend!

Lynn: poor guy, he did have a bit of a tough transition, but it won't take long for him to realize he's got a good home. Just be carefull ... he might never be a good off leash dog ... but you'll figure that out as time passes.

Our small sized rescue came with a long old fashioned woman's name, which has no cute short version, so we picked a new one. She was found on the streets, so she hadn't had that name for long anyway. Lately the rescue group we used has had some odd names for the dogs, but after finding homes for 600 dogs, they've gone through the standard names and have to get creative!

MtnRd asked why Dobermans have such a bad reputation. They were originally bred and introduced in Germany in 1890, specifically for protection. Around the time of WW2, they were used as police dogs and dogs working with soldiers. The movies picked up on those beautiful, quick, smart, intimidating dogs as the perfect "scary" dog for their movies. But, over the years, especially in the U.S. and and Canada, they have evolved into a great family dog, that is also great for protecting you, if need be. As I mentioned earlier, they love to cuddle and will gladly sit or lay on your lap if you let them. We don't as they're quite heavy. Ours have always loved to lie right on top of our feet or right next to them, so that they're touching us. Dobermans love being close enough to touch the people that they love. Hence, their nickname as "the Velcro Dog". Knight is my fourth Dobie, and all have been very affectionate, and also very good and welcoming to our friends. They're a very smart dog, fun-loving, athletic, and very loyal. And, as I said, good protection if/when needed. Over the years, mine have scared away three would-be burglar/intruders/? . . . and perhaps more that I don't know of when we were gone. Two of these incidents happened when I was home alone during the daytime. Although we live in a small mountain development, there are several acres between our homes. I feel safe having my Doberman here with me. He's my loyal friend, my furkid and, if ever needed again, will keep me safe from whatever.

Igor? wow, I don't blame you for wanting to change his name! If he could talk he'd probably thank you! LOL

P.S. Our Dobies are also great protection for our little dogs (and us) when we walk them. Out here, coyotes, wild dogs, bobcats and even mountain lions have been known to snatch a small dog right off their leash while their owners were walking them. Not often, but it has happened quite a few times that I've heard of here.

Igor...ugh!!! Poor dog!

We changed our rescue's name, but she was still a puppy (8 weeks) when we got her, so I didn't think it would matter. Her given name was Pepper and we renamed her Nola. We had a time getting her to respond to Nola. Imagine my surprise when at dinner one night I asked DH to pass the pepper. Nola jumped up like something had been ignited under her. She ran over with her tail wagging. Just to make sure it was the name that made her happy, I tried it again outside when she was ignoring me. She whipped around and ran to me. I felt so bad and as very careful not to use that word for a good while. I was tempted to change her name back, but my daughter didn't like the name "Pepper" for a girl dog.

Don't blame you for changing the name!

We will keep Panda's name since it is cute (along with her) and she definitely knows her name. I have a friend who has a black male cat named Pepper.
