How about simple fleece blankets?

My sons made throw pillows from kits when they were in life skills class. One that I remember was shaped like a lightbulb. Not sure where the kits came from, but I bet you could Goggle some.

Keep it simple,like pillows.or even pillow cases.If you make it too hard,he'll get frustrated and lose interest.

I especially agree about the PJ bottoms, or even summer shorts. He'll get such a kick out of wearing something he made, and they aren't too difficult or large.

If he is good with the machine, you could try him with some crazy patchwork - zigzagging bits onto a background cloth, then as others have said for bags and things.

What about a super hero cape? See what other dress-up he likes and I bet you could help him make tunics for being a knight, or simple shirts in the colors of cartoon characters. Boys also like the guy version of purses. A person always needs something to carry their treasures in.

These will make nice Christmas presents for teachers and family and are easy to make.

I agree with the pillowcase idea. There are so many neat prints - he could make some fun pillowcases for himself and maybe make some for Christmas gifts. Here is a link to directions:

If you live in area with a 4H program, ask them for the book Ready Let's Sew, they have patterns for a fanny pack and pin cushions but there is a section for a sewing machine license and so on. This is also a great place for him to express his creative side. Each pattern company has easy section patterns. Go to each sewing machine company for projects to make, they have some neat ones. Tell him to keep sewing...it is fun!

Check the link below to a beginning sewing book written especially for boys, sewing stuff that appeals to boys: "Buckles & Bobbins." The book starts off with easy patterns, then progresses with learning new techniques to more involved patterns. The patterns are included in the back of the book.

I remember making a bean bag frog when I was young. Two pieces of fabric cut in a simple frog shape. Put right sides together and sew all the way around leaving an opening between the rear legs. Turn right side out, fill with dry beans and handstich the opening together. Sew two buttons for the eyes.

Any simple shape will work.

He could make 3 small bags and teach himself how to juggle.

Just thought I'd share with you what my daughter does. She's a teenager but just recently became interested in sewing. She goes to the Goodwill on days when they have bag sales (all the clothes you can fit in a bag for $5) and buys herself a bag of tshirts and sweatshirts with neat designs on them. She cuts out the design and an exact same sized piece off the back of the shirt and sews them together to make a throw pillow. Sometimes she sews the shirt together leaving it whole. Stuffs them with fibrefill. She has made many for her friends and family, and recently took them to an outdoor market where she did quite well.
The styles and designs are endless and she keeps quite busy with it.
Your budding sewer would be able to do this project easily from the sounds of his ability and interest in sewing.

Hey, if the kid wants to sew ... encourage that!

How about finding him a free online pattern for making a basic tote bag or drawstring bag? He could use the bag for his PJs when he spends the night at grandma & grandpa's house, or any other time he travels in the car, to hold toys and books. He could decorate the bag with fabric markers, or raw edge applique some small patches of novelty fabric by stitching around the edges with a straight stitch relatively close to the raw edge of the fabric.

I have made the tissue holders from that free online pattern mentioned above. I made a lot to give to friends and family. He'll love that pattern. They're very easy to make, especially when you sew two at the same time, and just clip the thread with scissors once the fabric is out from under the presser foot, with the second piece still under the presser foot. It's called chain piecing by quilters.

A really fun project would be an I-spy quilt, but that's for later on, when he gets older and better at sewing. You collect squares of many, many novelty fabrics, make them into a quilt, then you can play games where you have to spot the race car, the butterfly, the frog, the train, etc.

When my son was little, he used to make hunting & camping "belts" with little pocket things to hold his stuff for being out in the woods.
They were a little crude but they worked, he was proud of them, & his friends all wanted one, too.
