I love your room including the wing chairs. I would love to see a big piece of vibrant abstract art over the fireplace.

Oooh, I love it before and after! I don't think the coffee table works and something more powerful on the wall over the fireplace would be nice, but I think the room is very nice as is too.

Was it your dining room that had family pictures on the walls? I thought that room was so charming and I get the same feeling from your living room. It doesn't look staged, it just looks like it would feel so good to visit in there.

Wow! Beautiful. You've done a great job putting the room together. While the colour of the coffee table works, I think you can get away with a longer one. I'm not sure you have to change the painting above the fireplace mantle. I think you can add three tall candle holders of varying sizes with candles on the right to go with the eclectic feel of the room.

You could also give some impact to the current painting by making a rectangle out of molding and painting the inside of the rectangle a color that would add some life to the painting. It could even be a white background. But this treatment would enlarge the affect of the painting over the fireplace.
Some big impact by way of mantel decor would do the trick as well. Love the new rug and the suitcase end table!

yup, the coffee table... that has given me some fits.

I had a set of the white tables and that fit the scale of the couch better, but it is a fairly narrow room and it made it difficult to walk through (it is not a major thoroughfare but does get some walk-thru traffic.)

I definitely can't have a wider/longer coffee table and the ottoman -- and I felt that the ottoman helped make the wing chairs a bit more casual, but perhaps I should re-think that.

Maybe a larger but round coffee table would better balance the scale of the couch but serve more like a traffic circle (and less like a road block)?

If anyone has some ideas of what I should be thinking about for a coffee table, that would be terrific. Thanks so much for the great feedback and insight - this is a talented group here on GW. :)

I love your room (with either rug!). Just wanted to add I especially love the restraint you used in accessorization. The simple canvas over the mantel, the antlers (or is that driftwood?) on the mantel, the soft blue armour with a few items on top. Then the vintage suitcases added a nice balance to the dark leg on the wing backs.

I love the rooms either way and the wall color. One thing though that I noticed was maybe something else is needed on the walls or could the cabinet be angled in the corner to fill in some space there. Maybe it is just the angle of the picture that makes me think it would make more sense that way and it has a different view from another area.

How about not having a coffee table?

I love how the rug instantly changed the wing chairs from "dated" to "retro". It is a magic carpet, indeed.

I'm thinking you could use two parsons tables as a coffee table. Maybe a bit smaller that the one you have now, but parsons tables are just so timeless.

i love your space and really like the addition of the texture of the IKEA rugs. And I agree with the others - a vibrant piece of artwork or a bold starburst mirror would look great over that mantel.

maybe use the ottoman as the coffee table instead? put a small tray on it if you are having drinks or whatever? I use a big ottoman as a coffee table and I love how casual/comfy it feels.

just wanted to chime in, gorgeous room, love the dusky colors and the wingbacks. Where did you get your antlers? Did you find them as sheds / buy them / or does your DH hunt?

What bothers me about the coffee table is the style. It is so modern and it seems very out of place with the rest of the room. I can see how two of those tables would have been too much for the space.

I like the idea of using the ottoman with a tray on it as a coffee table. If people sit in that chair, the ottoman might be nice to have there, but I wouldn't keep it by the chair just for looks.

I use a piano bench for a coffee table. I found a solid maple bench on CL for $20. It is the perfect size and height and has storage space inside. It's big enough to hold several glasses or plates, but not so big that it creates any space problems in the room.

Jenny - the antlers are sheds and I love them. I bought them off eBay, a huge box for $25 - a total steal. If it is white and has texture, I buy it - hence the rug! :)

Great thinking all around - the flokati is great. I think you do need a big, interesting mirror over your fireplace.

I think you might also consider having slipcovers made for your wing chairs and your ottoman - I'd look for a creamy yellow and white wide ticking stripe cotton for the chairs, and a rich robin's egg blue for your footstool, and have them all tailored with corner-pleated skirts to the floor.

Add a pair of generous yellow and white cushions in a bold graphic design to your velvet sofa, and you've kept your traditional lines, but given the room a fresh, informal feeling.
