Ikea range hood reviews?

We are in the end stages of planning our kitchen remodel. I recently decided I want a larger stainless steel range hood (the industrial type) and saw a few at Ikea. I fell in love with this one:

because there is a rail around the top, within which you can stash a salt pig, pepper grinder, and other common condiments (for us, red pepper flakes and garlic powder). I also just love the look.

However, I am not sure how well they function in general. This version is $300 higher than the basic model:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10222538/

and if the only difference is the design, then I'm not sure I can justify the higher price tag. Of course I see on the description that they have the same motor power, but the first one is just a little quieter (trying them in the store, they both seemed sorta loud). But I'm not sure whether one actually functions better than the other in practice.

So, anyone used large Ikea hoods in their kitchens? Or have recommendations for something similar to the first one that functions really well?

Have you looked at Costco? They have a 30" one for 180.00 with a lot of positive reviews. Other places sell it fro 290.00.

@Marty H: I'm not sure what your question is. Given that you know what your CFM requirements are based on hood size (see a bazillion threads here) and understand the pressure loss picture well enough to estimate the rated CFM of the blower needed, (or just use a factor of 1.5), pick a blower from the Wolf, Broan, Fantech, Abbaka, etc. products depending on how you can mount it and adapt it. Some electrical work will be required when the blower is at point X and the hood and/or blower control is at point Y. That is, the power to the blower has to get from where the old fan was to where the new blower fan is. And if the motor types are different, then the motor control has to be different. Every case will need some tailored solution. @pittsburrito may be able to describe his adaptation in sufficient detail to allow you to copy it. I have no information on the motor control details of the Faber hood line.

You’re not misunderstanding. Pretty much all Pro ranges will have that requirement. Wider hood. Cut down cabinet depth. No cabinets on range wall, chimney hood only. Do a consumer grade range. Use a better cabinet line with many more options. That is your best option if you want to do a kitchen to the level of a pro style range. And to skip Viking for any other pro style range. You're not designing something that has a level seesaw in quality here.

I have the Luftig and it's VERY loud on the high setting. Medium is pretty loud too but the slow speed is ok. I haven't done a lot of cooking yet but I did check how the steam from boiling pasta was getting sucked up and it seemed pretty good.

I don't do tons of cooking and I live alone so I don't need to talk about the sound of the fan. If I did, I'd reconsider my choice, I guess.

OK, sounds like I want to pass up those Ikea options. I want to be able to have friends over and have conversations with my H and kid, so I don't want something insanely loud.

Thanks for the rec on Costco!! I haven't been lately, but we do have a membership. I just looked it up online and indeed it sounds like a nice option, especially for that price! I'm going to read all the reviews carefully to see whether it's loud... would love any other recommendations as well. Thanks all!! This forum is the best!
