Also do a search for grey weathered cabinets on garden web. There was a long thread on how to achieve the perfect grey, using some new product. It might work for your project.

Thanks you guys. No store within 4 hours, but I'm heading to Seattle tomorrow to see family and theres a store there. Maybe I can go look, and maybe buy a front and play with at family's home. I can always bring it home with me in the suitcase :)

What about doors from Barkers or Scherrs or SemiHandmade? Lots more option, with the ability to do your own finish from scratch.

I think re-finishing all the Ikea doors/fronts is going to add a MASSIVE amount of work to your project. You'll have to destroy the protective finish Ikea applied, then add your stain/glaze, then finish it again. Better to order doors and fronts from Scherr's or a competitor. (Really anyone who makes doors/fronts to custom specs can do this for you.) Either have them finish the doors as you like, or get them unfinished and do it yourself.

I don't remember exactly, but I believe Scherr's, Semihandmade, etc. etc. are not much more $$ than ikea's doors. If you order them unfinished and DIY the finish yourself, you may even save money vs Ikea's doors + re-finishing yourself.

Elizardbethday, I totally agree with too much work, lol. I was thinking that with gel stain you didn't have to take the existing finish off. Never used the stuff. The linked examples of finishes shown above are beautiful but I want easy this go around. I will settle for existing finish probably. Still in planning stage for cabinets. But I might be interested in looking at Semihandmade, Scherr, and Barkers.

True, with gel stain you don't need to take the existing finish off. Plus, it's positively addictive :)

Oh! I didn't know that gel stain goes right on top of funished doors. That doesn't sound so bad!

You'd have to try it to make sure it adheres properly. Gel stain is more opaque and more paint like, not really like a normal stain that penetrates into the wood. Having said that, I slapped it right on laminate as well as old oak cabinets and has held up very well. It's also designed for fiber glass.
Still, your IKEA warranty will be voided if you paint or stain the cabinets.

I was at Ikea yesterday, and was shown an email from corporate showing the new doorstyles for 2017 (should be introduced by August of this year). There's going to be an ash veneer door. I know that Ikea offers whitewashed ash doors in Europe and Canada. I've read on a GW thread recently that these doors are temporarily unavailable/discontinued due to finish problems. It seems to me, Ikea is working on a solution to that problem and will be re-introducing these doors with a new, hopefully problem free finish.

Pippabean, do you know if they are releasing any other doors? I'm actually looking for a white door, preferably shaker.

I don't think I saw white shaker doors.

In addition to the new ash fronts, there's going to be a walnut or walnut-look front (not sure if it's foil or walnut textured laminate) with an integrated handle at the top of drawers and handles on the side of the doors, something like the Godmorgon vanities in the textured oak laminate.

They're keeping the high gloss Ringhult white (I think it's their bestseller) but probably the Ringhult grey will be discontinued. As an alternative to the Ringhult, they will introduce a new line of less expensive high-gloss fronts in white, cream and some other colors.

Also, the yellow accent doors will be replaced with orange ones.

Oh, I forgot: there's also a new slab front in blue-grey and last but not least: a slab door with a black and white graphic printed on it.

Pooh, but that's about what I would have expected.

Caraline Neus, I got the Laxarby in Black Brown and I'm very happy with it. The color is different from my neighboring room (kitchen) but the styles are very very similar so it blends. My kitchen is unstained cherry. Here is a picture of the cabinets and the room is not finished. The counter is soapstone that isn't finished either :)
