An Ikea hack - converting a drawer front to a door

Our kitchen ceiling is pretty low, plus my wife is ahh... errr... height challenged, so tall 40" wall cabinets were ruled out. She loved seeing wall cabinets stacked on top of the counter at the Ikea store. The idea was to create a pantry.

The problem was finding cabinets that would stack to the 84" height. In the end I am using a standard 30" cabinet and a 15" tall cabinet on the counter. That will leave me with a 4" trim piece at the top so the pantry top would match the other wall cabinets.

Here's the stack in the living room.

The top cabinet is a standard Sektion 24" wide x 15" tall x 14-3/4" (302.654.66). Guess what? You cannot purchase a Bodbyn Gray door for this box. But you can get a drawer front that is the perfect size. What I need to do is create the holes for the hinges.

Here's a pre-drill Ikea Sektion door and the 15" x 24" drawer so you get the idea.

Luckily I already have a jig and 1-3/8" Forstner bit. I'll just need to mark and drill in the locator holes with a drill bit. I can use the hinge for that.

Here's what I ended up with. Not to shabby hmmm?

And here's the stack with the completed door.
