Sewing a sling for a porch swing. DONE!

Note: I posted this in the Trash to Treasure forum, but it's really a sewing project.

I got a FREE swing off CL. People throw them away when the seat falls apart.

Here's the sling seat I made:

Then I took old couch cushions, cut the foam into 4" slabs, glued them together with 3M spray glue...and covered the cushions with Sunbrella fabric($7.95 a yd). I used "Meander" for the cushions & "Dimone Flame" for the pillows: (Fabricguru.com)

So well done! That's amazing how you brought the swing back to life. It looks comfortable & the fabrics are beautiful. I could just imagine myself there... iced lemonade would taste real nice sitting in that swing : )

Not to worry Gandle because alot of us missed the other sewing machine thread. I could also talk sewing machines (and knitting needles - metal vs. bamboo) all day long. My mother sewed lots of clothes for us when we were kids, like you said including coats!! Sewing holds so many memories. My mom and I took the train down to Chicago to shop Marshall Fields fabric department for just the right material for my prom dress. I didn't have to be worried that I'd see anyone else walking around the prom in the same dress. I never had home ec. in high school so as a young married woman I begged mom to teach me how to sew and I was off to the races. For awhile when the kids were little my sewing machine was a revenue generator, the dolls, clothes and Christmas decorations created on that machine allowed me to be a stay-at-home mom. In the mid-70's I invested in a very pricey electronic Singer. But as electronics have the habit of doing, it fried out sometimes in the 1990's. I've been sewing (sometimes daily for years) on a little Brother machine I picked up at Gag-Mart. The older machines such as Leona's are far superior because all the internal parts are metal. You could literally drive over them with a Mack truck and they'd keep on going. I'm holding my breath on the Brother because many of the internal parts are plastic. It's funny you posted this today, because as soon as I'm off the computer here I'm into my sewing room to construct an evening jacket for the cruise we're taking at the end of the month. It's a Vogue pattern by designer Guy Laroche. I love the process of clothing construction, it's actually quite interesting. I'll try and take a picture when I'm finished. Thanks Gandle. Maybe I'll look for one of those older Singer's on EBay. Awwww...the shipping would kill me though.

I was browsing tonight, looking for small shades for my potted plants…and came across your photo! i couldnt believe it. i came up with the same idea about 4 years ago. i had some leftover H-wires (from when i used to design and create sponsor signs for golf tournaments) and thought if i covered them with that green mesh, they would work well to shade my plants. and they can be moved and adjusted as need be. it gets very hot here in Contra Costa County, CA, and these little guys do the job! i bent the frames first and then stapled the cloth around wires. they've held up just fine for four years. i would recommend these easy inexpensive shades to anyone. Great minds think alike!

Wow, that does look great (maybe I should put some of the crushed stone all the way in front of the porch LOL). I'm just a little leary of putting the wicker so close to that end that gets soaked every time it rains, esp. my favorite rocker (even though it needs some work on the back legs). I know you probably just "invented" the solid blue pillows, but *where* did you find the patterned "fabric"? Please tell me it's fabric - it's perfect! I really need to hang some baskets up too - was just telling my dad last night they'd give some shade from the front - he suggested blinds! Thanks so much for PSing this for me - I found more of the beige "caned" pattern cushions on sale at Target yesterday (I ran in for rain check but they had them). But after seeing this, I *have* to use the stripe! We're going to put white vinyl up under the deck and close off the stair risers too it's been sitting in my basement all winter, now it's warm enough to put it up so I'll be calling my cousin to ask if he can do it some weekend. DH didn't get the oak double rocker out of the basement yesterday - we were trying to get the driveway fixed up from plowing (and picking stones out of the lawn that got thrown there from plowing/shoveling). Should we even bother getting it out? I still want him to get the big salt crock out - last year used it (occasionally - most people come in garage) for umbrellas. Maybe I should look for a glass top for it and use it instead of the little dark table? It's a little taller than the wood tables. Maybe we'll haul them out today and take more pics.

Excellent job. We got rid of ours this year,had it for a number of years and i had already replaced the top several years ago.The fabric on the seat still had some life left in it,also sunbrella,but because we live close to the ocean the frame had rusted and one of the legs broke off part of the way.So yesterday i salvaged part of the seat fabric and recovered a cushion on a bench we have on the front porch.I'm all for recycling whenever i can.

You got a good buy on your fabric,when i bought mine several years ago i paid 14.99 a yard,and that's the going price around here ,unless you have a coupon and joann's is having a sale.Although they never have the color/pattern i'm looking for,so i go to an upholstery outlet.

Thanks for all the nice compliments!

My Dh has fallen asleep in it a few times. :0)

The fabric price was only GREAT because it was an online purchase.

I made an additional neckroll pillow, so there's a pair. I used the poly on the outside of those 2 seat cushions to stuff the pillows. I used velcro on the ends of those also.

You really did a great job on this "Reborn" swing. You should be proud of your work. I think the previous owner may want it back hahaha.

I know this is an old thread but I hope I will still get a reply. :)
I have the same type of the swing and all the fabric is falling apart. On my swing the sling and cushion are sewn together but I would like to re-do it with a separate sling and cushions. Hope I can do it since we really love that swing.

What fabric did you use for the sling part? What site did you buy the fabric from.

Just in case you don't get an answer from the OP, I would use canvas, which you can get at Joanne's, Hancock's in person or on line. It should be fairly tightly woven and at least medium weight. I would pre-wash it, but I pre-wash everything.

Joanne's sells some very nice outdoor canvas made of 100% polyester. Sunbrella types of canvas are made of acrylic.

If your items are to be in the sun much it is a good idea to sew them with a specialty thread made to withstand the sun.

This is a stupid question but how did you make the sling? Did you make a casing for the bars to actually thread through? I've needed to do this for a couple years and have no idea where to start

I had a salvaged swing very much like yours that I added new fabric to. What I found is that it did not drain well and it always collected water and debris. I did use an outdoor fabric. This would work better if it was in a covered area, away from rain and sun. But, mine did not last well in the elements. Good luck.
