SFG shading/trellis
Comments (2)Can you hang something from anything above? Like one of the shade sails that can adjusted over it as the sun moves and to cover/uncover plants as needed. They have 3 or 4 corner connection points so one from the wall and one from a post in each corner of the balcony. See link below for examples of what I mean. Another possibility might be a patio umbrella with the pole attached to 1 side of the bed and top can be tipped as needed. Comments (27)Well, they're not heavy duty umbrellas...which in the case of the way in which I use them, is an advantage anyway. Harbor Freight has them on sale for this price quite often through this time of year. Stop by a HF and get on their mailing list then you'll know when they have them on sale. I bought maybe 20-30 of them and though the ones I have left are now pretty ratty looking, they still have their uses...lol.....See MoreTiny SFG Garden Plan (w/corn, succession) - comments / suggestion
Comments (1)I tried 44 SF of corn last year planting essentially according to Mel's spacing. It was way too close and the cobs never fully formed. It ended up as chicken and goat feed. I will not be doing corn again. Too little return for the space requirements. That said, as long as you are only doing one variety, succession planting should work. I did 2 varieties and I got cross pollination, which was bad. So I guess if you can plant all you want of everything else in one bed, go for it, just don't overcrowd the corn and don't let it shade your other bed when it gets too tall. Good luck and enjoy your garden! Here is a link that might be useful: Sinfonian's garden adventure...See Moreplease review my sfg plan, new to sfg
Comments (10)Yes corn should be planted in blocks, the NW corner would work well. The remaining tall plants should be on the north side too, including those you will trellis (cukes or other vines). The 3 sisters scheme referred to a vining (usu. winter) squash to climb the corn. My summer (yellow) squash, has huge leaves and takes up a 4x4ft box when its happy. I have squeezed 2 plants (6in. apart) in a 4x4. I wouldn't put squash on the N side, tho I have had it get 3ft high. Certainly it would provide shade for a smaller plant, but usu. stifles anything under it. You might try radishes, lettuce, or spinach will would be done before the squash shades everything. Read up on the Squash Vine Borer (SVB) so you know what is happening when the squash suddenly dies....See Moremomma_s
