I am so fed up with my sewing machine.

I have tried so many things and am ready to throw my machine against the wall. When I sew anything with my machine, the thread on top or bottom (doesn't matter)does this: bunches, knotts up, breaks, uneven stitches where there may be a large gap in between the stitch width, etc.

The items that I sew now look like dog poo because of it. I have tried other repair help sites, the manual, oil, taking apart and cleaning, trial and error on the different dials as well as all different kinds of thread quality.

Please help me, if there is something I am missing or is it time to throw it out?

This is a brother and is about 5-6 years old.

I'm sure most of us have been in the same spot at one time or another. You didn't mention your model number which might be a help to others here. Did you try changing the needle? I'm sure you have as it seems you have tried most everything else. I suspect the timing is off....and for me that means a repairman. Depending on the amount of money you spent on the machine, and the cost of the repair...well it might be time for a new one. Most new cheaper models (big box or some Walmart specials) are made to only last a few years and can't be repaired and thus have to be replaced...which is why many of us here stick to the older model machines and look at the trade ins when out machine shopping. Ask for an estimate before you agree to any repairs. That would be my best advice. Budster

I am not a sewing machine expert, but I do make a lot of quilts. Occasionally, like everyone else, my machine does what you are describing and usually a quick cleaning or re-threading fixes the problem. It is not normal for a 5-6 year old machine to be doing this so it sounds like it time for a trip to a service place. It's worth it to reduce the stress it's causing. Like the previous poster said, get an estimate so you can decide if you want to repair or replace!

You said it doesn't matter if it's the top or bottom thread. Do you mean it does it with both? From a trouble shooting perspective it does matter which it is so if it's one or the other it would help to know that.

Is this machine new to you or have you had it a while? Did it ever work OK or has it been doing this as long as you've had it? If you bought it used, and it's never worked for you, then this might be why the last person got rid of it! But if it used to work fine for you, then it can almost certainly be fixed.

What's the model? There may be others here with similar problems.

Try posting this on the quilting forum too be cause there are lots of quilters with Brother machines and they may be able to help if they know the model.

Weissman - this post has dragged on for a while, but I have heard enough dissenting opinions here that I have concluded, as Palimpsest said, the quote is "pricey, but not gouging". I gave the go ahead. Hi Lascatx --- no worry --- tone is to hard to read here. I didn't think you were saying that, I was just letting you know that I understand you get more bees with honey etc etc etc..... Marcolo, Funny, both you and Rococo mention rising costs and I have not heard that at all from anyone. I do think you are being just a tad harsh, now --- much of the labor is indeed quite skilled, not chicken pluckers. And in this area, we really don't have hungry contractors. I am told the lesser ones folded, and the 'good" ones are doing work for all the people who would move but dont want to sell into this market. BLfenton - as i mentioned in my post, part of it is the "change order" terminology. Inspectors telling me I need a steel beam is a change order ... conceding to paint the whole house instead of just the new construction elements is a change order .... replumbing to accommodate a taller washer and dryer than what was there is a change order... electricians' time to rewire european fixtures is a change order ...KWIM? We are not indecisive dilettantes dreaming up new ideas as we go. And this is part of the research now ... questioning this item. By the way, this item does not put me over my allowance for counters, so in that sense I did "know the costs before starting". But just because something comes in within allowance, doesnt mean I dont want to understand it. Thanks Pharaoh, But, if i get it right, wouldnt that mean every slab of the same size would have the same fab cost? Whether I cut it into 10 peices or 2? That seems counterintuitive.

If the needle is not picking up the bobbin thread, the needle thread is not making the full rotation around the bobbin and that usually means the thread is hanging up halfway around the bobbin casing and collecting in loops. My new machine (Singer)has a drop-in bobbin with a transparent plate over it, so what was happening was easy to see. It wouldn't be with a side mount bobbin or a metal slide over it. You may want to pull back the slide and turn the wheel a full rotation and watch what is transpiring with the loop of needle thread. Sounds to me like it is catching somewhere on the bobbin chase. When this happens to me, it's usually caused by the (oh gosh I don't know the technical term for it) lever what goes up and down holding the thread as it drops down the front of the machine. It has usually had too much slack and slipped off, totally screwing up the upper tension. Another time it was because when I seated the bobbin it was not seated all the way into the spindle and protruded too much. This new machine just has a very tricky tension and it does this occasionally with no particular reason. Othewise it's a fun machine. Watch to see what is going on when the needle thread makes that rotation around the bobbin to catch the bobbin thread if you can. I think you'll see it isn't completing it.

Thread snapping and needle breaking sounds like wrong threading or wrong setup. All sewing machines needs service now and then. Give the machine some TLC, oil all places, check with the instruction manual if you have it. There are holes to be oiled, lids to be lifted, sometimes loosening of a screw or two is needed. All models and makes are different this way. In general: move all joints and moving parts that touch, it is all about reducing friction. Check for any threads and lint around the bobbin case and feed dogs (unscrew the needle plate if necessary). It's surprising what can gather there over time. Double check that threading is done correctly on both under thread and over thread. Some models are very particular, the bobbin has to go in the right way (the way it is wound). Then check needle, sometimes low quality needles make machines act up, if possible use Schmetz or Orgran during truble shooting. Check that the needle is put in the correct way for your model (flat side either to the right, left or backwards). This should give you an indication of how the needle is threaded, usually straight on when the flat side of the needle is in the back (facing away from you). Make sure the thread doesn't go around the needle, only straight along the shaft through the hole and under the pressure foot and backwards. Needles needs to be replaced quite often, and make sure they are sharp and not bent. Thicker needle for denim and heavier fabrics, finer for thinner fabrics. Always sharp needle unless you sew jersey or knits. This might have solved the problem, but if not: When you have double checked correct insertion of the needle, set the machine to straight stitching. Make sure the needle doesn't hit the needle plate by manually moving the balance wheel. There is most likely a function for moving the needle to the left or to the right, and there is often a mark on the needle plate for correct posistion. Don't drag the fabric at all when trouble shooting, let the feed dogs do all the work. You most likely don't have to adjust under thread tension, but double check that upper thread tension mechanism is clean and lint free. Some models have automatic tension (Bernina had it on their 60s models), others have a manual knob with numbers, models differ a bit that way. If upper thread tension is too high the tread will snap, but most often it is wrong threading or setup when adjusting the tension doesn't solve it. Only bother about this after straight stitching works fine: Then set the machine to zigzag, check the needle movement manually with your hand turning the balance wheel a few times. The needle should go clear of the needle plate and move within the space it is meant for. There is limit to how wide the zigzag stitch can be set (how far the needle arm swing from right to left when sewing).

This might be a really dumb question, but have you checked the thread? Is it high quality, is it really old, anything like that?

I learned this the hard way myself- rayon thread and my machine do horrible things together.

been there too, even on good machines. try cleaning out the bobbin area and keeping it clean also, I have found that my machine can sew a lot faster than the thread can handle, especially the cotton covered polyester. plain cotton thread or plain polyester works better. Also if I slow down it helps especially on button holes.

If it's like my brother the silver bobbin casing has a "screw" on the side. You have to turn the "screw" which is the bobbin tension. Good Luck!

How are you getting along with your machine? Did you find a replacement or get it working right?

With me, I enjoy both old and new machines. Old ones are beautiful and solid and reliable, while new ones have awesome features that make sewing a breeze. It seems like you have tried everything I would have thought of for that problem. Hope you can get it worked out.
