Please help--what am I doing wrong?

Hello--this is my first time posting on this sight. I usually hang out on the decorating forum. I have searched this sight for the answer to my question, but haven't found one. I am trying to make throw pillow covers. I can make my own fabric covered cording and attach it to the fabric and make it look perfect. I use my zipper foot and move the needle laterally to get a close as possible. However, when I do this with purchased fancy lip cording, I cannot get the seam close enough to the cording to make it look right. Does that make sense? I don't know what is wrong. It does really look hideous --can see a good portion of the lip sticking out no matter how close I get. It's almost as if I need to sew through the edge of the cording to get it snug enough to the fabric. Is there another type of foot that I need to be using? The fancy cording trim is 3/8 diameter. Thanks so much for your help.
