Use Mr Clean Magic Eraser in Sewing room

I saw a tip in SewNews about cleaning your iron with the Magic eraser & tried it with a generic one. It worked good & I started looking for other dirty things & saw my gooey embroidery hoops. Worked good there on all flat surfaces...caused excessive crumbling on the indented areas. Main advantage for me with asthma, beyond it's cleaning abilities, was NO odors or fumes!

Thanks for the tip, Joan! I usually follow DH around with the Magic Eraser! LOL The edge strip on my kitchen counter was like permanently sticky because grease & stuff had gotten into the varnish - Mr. Clean took that right off! Of course, it took off a lot of the varnish, too...but it was faster and cleaner than paint stripper!

My dining room set is an old one,like from the 70's,and when i first got it i used to polish it everyweek with furniture polish.So over time the arms and backs of the chairs became very sticky from the polish residue.One day i was cleaning something else and i thought i'd try to clean one of the chairs.It took that sticky residue right off.I think it also may have taken of a little of the finish,but no biggie.One of these days i'm going to do all the chairs and then just give them a fresh coat of stain if need be and a finish.
By the way,i also learned my lesson along the way to not use furniture polish.I just use lemon oil now,or the pledge furniture oil.

I use the recommended creme on my cooktop....put it on, spread it around with a damp paper towell, let it sit then wash it off with another paper towel or micro cloth. Once in a while I have to do this twice if I really mucked it up, a single edge razor blade also works well on stubborn burns.

I'm with dotmom, Jannie, I'm sorry for the gloom and happy that you found a reason to feel better about your misadventure. Dotmom, out kitchen needed an update but we were not ready for, nor did we need, new cupboards. My cabinets are solid oak, tho they are stained dark, and being 20 years old they needed a good cleaning and update. I finally bit the bullet and scrubbed them down with MEs and then used paste wax on them and replaced all the hardware. The difference was staggering.

Shelly, I believe "conversion varnish finish" means that a special process that may include a catalyst is used to make the finish. I believe this is not something that can be done at home. I think it must involve some serious solvents, and this is why it is not available in California, with their stricter air quality laws. How does this affect you? Not sure, but at least I gave you something else to read while you are waiting for an answer. If you want to learn more, try a wikipedia search on "conversion varnish." Generally, not all finishes adhere to all other finishes. Be sure to research before you try any repair.
