Hooray for Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

This isn't exactly a cleaning tip or an auto hint, so I'm posting here. This morning at 5 am, as I was driving to the Hospital for dialysis, it was pitch dark and rainy and I admit I was feeling sleepy. As I pulled into a parking space, I banged the front bumper of my car into a light pole. Went inside, came out to find lots of scratches but luckily no dents. I was so upset, I started to cry. Went home and told DH, he was quite understanding. I looked at the scratches, they didn't seem "awful". So I went inside, got my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, wet the blue side and went over the scratches in a circular motion. Most of them disappeared. What's left doesn't look so bad. Just thought I'd tell everyone of a new use for Mr. Clean Eraser.

Aww, Jannie, I'm glad you found a little sunny spot in your day, even if it came from a bald hunk with an earring. I hope the rest of your day is sunny too.
One use for the M.E. I found, is when moving and cleaning the old APT and having to do some cleaning in the new, I found it worked to clean the grubby corners and bottoms of cupboards....you know the part we grab to open them to get something out. Especially the cupboards with out knobs.

I'm with dotmom, Jannie, I'm sorry for the gloom and happy that you found a reason to feel better about your misadventure.

Dotmom, out kitchen needed an update but we were not ready for, nor did we need, new cupboards. My cabinets are solid oak, tho they are stained dark, and being 20 years old they needed a good cleaning and update. I finally bit the bullet and scrubbed them down with MEs and then used paste wax on them and replaced all the hardware. The difference was staggering.

My absolute favorite use for the ME is to clean the textured handles on my refrigerator. Some paint can handle the ME, some can't (like the paint on the walls of my current home) I use the ME to clean my shower. I figure if I do a wall at a time (while I'm in there anyway), it won't take long, and I can keep up with it. Once in a while (ok, maybe after I've been slacking on my maintenance cleaning) I use another cleaner, but I don't really see much difference between the two. I have wondered if it's a good idea to use them on the glass doors. I do it anyway. There is that last little layer of water spots I just can't get off the doors, so I figure the ME can't be scratching it, or if it is, I won't know it until I decide I want to try some nasty chemical stuff to get the water spots off. I don't use it so much on shiny metal things though. (I read the box ages ago but don't have one right now)

Yeah, I should have posted the Snopes article link also in my first post. The site has posted the generated response that P&G sends out to the consumers who inquire about the saftey of the product. It does not address the issue of outgassing. They sort of walk around the whole issue. That makes me very suspicious. They keep emphasizing that the product does not *contain* formaldehyde but do not say anything to assure the consumer that the products does not *degrade* into it's componants or into something entirely different. I'm sure everyone can remember from chemistry class how the addition of something simple like *water* to a simple compound can create something, or maybe two or three things, that are entirely different. Formaldehyde itself is produced by a catalytic oxidation. Even the addition of *heat* to a compound can change it - even heat from friction. So can sunlight...... If I leave my Magic Sponge on the window sill above the sink, is the sunlight going to cause it to release gases. There is not a lot of info out there on formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer so I absolutly do not know anything _for sure_ about it. BUT, I do not trust the Big Corporations "announcments" about the saftey of their products. We have all been fooled in the past. Being an 'oldster' I remember how back in the 50's - 60's we were being told that cigarette smoking was COMPLETELY HARMLESS. Cigarette companies even got medical doctors to appear in their commercials to endose their product and dispell the "myth" about the damgers of cigarette smoking. One company even developed 'harmless' *asbestos* cigarette filters. I just am not going to take P&G's "word for it" about a product that is making them tens of MILLIONS of dollars per year. I want to see Snopes publish something from another source other than that of the maufacturer of the product.

Sorry about the delay. In respose to Premier, I did use a scraper first but they leave a stain which is amazingly resilient. The Magic erasers worked great on the siding but was worried about dulling or scratching the glass. In response to Meg. Google Artillery fungus or Shotgun fungus and you'll get a host of info.. It's relatively new and is found in landscaping mulches around the house. It prefers shady moist areas and unfortunately when the temperatures are right eg. low 60's, It shoots its spores up to 20' and generally towards bright shiny objects like windows and bright siding.. Weird I know but thats what I read. Apparently its a big problem in Mi,Oh,Pa. Supposedly the problem can be reduced by adding new mulch every year so that the decomposed stuff gets buried.. I removed all of mine in that area and put in fresh Pine nuggets which are not as likely to cause it. Some Homeowners have actually had to completely re-side their homes because it is that stubborn.. It will also blast light colored cars..

I'm sorry for your bad experience, but a similar thing happened with my car - an automatic security gate closed on mine - no dents, just white imprints. I came home and used the Magic Eraser to clean those marks off - I couldn't tell anything had ever happened.

I use Magic Erasers for SO Many cleaning projects around my house.

Jannie, they don't call them "Magic" for nothing. I've read all kinds of success stories when using the Erasers.

I wish you could buy Magic Erasers in bulk and a much lower price than what the grocery stores sell them for. I should probably check with eBay.

Amazon sells them in bulk. The dollar store has a decent version too.

Jannie--it's a car. Don't let things like that upset you, it's just not worth it. Everything we use gets a little "used looking" over time. But I am glad you fixed it up because that made you feel better.

I never think of using the Magic Eraser. Thanks for the reminder about it.

Lynn d. Thanks for the suggestion. The house we bought 2 yrs ago was built in the 60's and has solid wood dark stained cabs in excellent condition. I have scrubbed them countless times, but the soil around the knobs, just hasnt come off. The kitchen, dining and family room are all open to one another, and at night when the lights are on, I can see the spots all the way from the family room. I will definitely try the magic eraser.
