How do I fix wall to re-install curtain rod?

Hi,
I was looking something up and fell, ended up holding the curtain rod and almost completely pulled it off the wall.

It came off the wall in 3 points, but all in different ways. One bracket had one screw broken. So the head of the screw is broken and the rest remains in the wall with the anchor. And the other screw came out but anchor remains.
On a second bracket, the screw and anchor came out.

There is a 3rd bracket that has not come off and is in good condition attached to the wall.

What's the best way to fix it and re-attach the brackets? Do I need to completely remove the screw and anchors, close the hole and make new holes? Will I have to repair this wholes but move and replace all 3 brackets?

One observation, this is a plaster wall.

It's been my expereince that it's diffcult to restore the pull out strength at the same location once it's been damaged like that. If you installation can tolerate it, it's best to set new anchors in an undamaged part of the wall (at least a couple of inches away from these holes).

That being said, you can try to use oversize wall anchors and grip the existing holes or you can fill them and put new anchors in. If you're holding up heavy drapes it could prove frustrating.

If you opt for new anchors, and the old holes re covered by the drapes, then IMHO you only have tor repair the old holes if knowing they exist bothers you as they won't be seen under normal circumstances.

Hi sdello, thanks for the message. I was able to replace one of the screws with a hollow wall anchor. Seems to have worked and I already installed one of the 2 brackets. I am now having trouble with the other one. The hole became too large to hold the head of the hollow wall anchor.

The drapes are not very heavy. I would prefer to not have to make new holes in new position and cover the existing ones.

Do you have any suggestion for dealing with the hole that is too wide and still be able to use it, possibly with the hollow wall anchor?

Bear in mind that online reviews usually number a handful, so it's hard to determine quality based on reviews. Faucetdirect.com has lots of rods. Brass rods are the most expensive. I bought stainless steel. The Kohler rods would have been my first choice, but my shower is 58", and theirs and many others start at 60". I had to buy Moen and it does look nice. We have good ventilation so I don't think rust will be a problem. Location: Once you have the rod and shower curtain, you'll figure it out pretty quickly. Most shower curtains are 70-72" long. Leaking: Curved rods won't prevent it. I bought a shower curtain liner at BB&B that has suction cups along the sides. Shower curtains: JC Penney, Macy's, Kohl's, BB&B, Pottery Barn, Croscill.com, Overstock.com, etc. I've looked at hundreds and haven't found what I'm looking for. Most look pretty chintzy imo.

The second one might work if you have the bracket just out enough from the corner so that the end piece will be touching the wall. Curtains should be able to cover that much of the rod. Might have to "scrunch" the curtains over a little. If you use curtains with grommets, that would take care of the problem. How high are you putting your rod? I have sheers on all my windows and love the look.

I hate shoe molding. It always looks dirty. I thought it was just my cleaning abilities! LOL. It looks like your house was NOT built straight!! I think it is just the floor that makes the walls look like they aren't square. The gaps shown in photo #1 aren't consistent along the board. One end might have an acceptable gap and the other end looks like the photo. Once you get to the end of the room with a couple of skewed boards it looks like photo #3. If it were a smaller room instead of the open floor plan, it might not look so bad in that corner. robin069 may have a point. But the flooring installers could have simply cut a triangular piece that would fit flush to the wall. Sounds like a triangular piece might be the "fix" for now. We are so far over schedule that if we don't convert our construction loan we will get hit with extra fees. I might not gain as much fighting over this as I'll lose in bank fees for not wrapping it up ASAP. It kills me to say this, but maybe I'll have to live with it for now and redo the floors ourselves at a later date. I've installed vinyl and tile flooring as a DIY project in previous houses. It took FOREVER because I wanted it right, but they looked good. I'm guessing if I can do vinyl and tile as a DIY, I can do wood floors.

Nancy- A single, typical threaded insert has a pullout strength of at least 80 pounds, so they are entirely adequate for this job as long as the size is properly matched to the hole. The fastener you are talking about -- a molly bolt with a wing nut -- is not as good in my opinion as the nut makes a hole much bigger in diameter than the bolt itself. Over time this can allow something that is used frequently (like a TP holder) to move around a bit and sometimes the bolt loosens. An alternative molly bolt that does not have this problem is a hollow drive molly bolt that does not have a separate nut but consists of a tubular shaft that compresses behind the wall when the bolt is screwed in; the shaft fills the hole so there is no wiggling around of the bolt. However, the hole must match the fastener diameter; if the hole is oversize it can't be properly set. It also has the advantage that you can remove and reinsert the bolt repeatedly since the tube part doesn't fall behind the wall like the single use wing nut style.

Were the previous screws just set directly into the wall? You might try some anchors with a plastic insert. I can't tell from your photo if the top hole already has an insert in it.

You could also fill the existing hole with 5 minute epoxy. Let it cure overnight and set in either a new screw or a hollow wall anchor. If you go with this method, I'd suggest drilling a pilot hole in the cured epoxy before setting a srew in it. My 0.02. good luck

Hi sdello, thanks for the message. There was a screw with plastic anchor and it came out enlarging the hole.

Do you recommend that I fill in the hole with the epoxy?

If you want to go back in the exact same spot. I would think the epoxy would work. Alternately the proper size molly bolt (they have spring loaded wings, see the link). Might do it.

The first picture shows a center bracket. I would relocate that one to a stud.

I don't think just filling the hole with something is a good, permanent fix. If you are locating it where you don't have a stud, use some type of molly bolt so that the hardware has something to bear against.
