What is typical distance between china cabinet shelves?

I probably should have started a new thread for this question yesterday, but I posted it on an old thread I found because I wanted to point to a couple of pictures on it, mainly from nanny2a. I don't know if I didn't get any answers because of lack of interest or because I dug up an old thread and people assumed a spammer brought it up.

So I'll try again and if no one answers, at least I'll know it's lack of interest. ;)

Here is the old thread I found, you can go to it and see nanny2a's cabinet. I'd like to set some dinner plates on edge and need to know how much space between shelves.

The cabinets I have currently have pegs that fit into holes in the sides of the cabinet and the shelves fit on the pegs. But the holes are spaced for stereo equipment and I either need to drill more holes or put in an adjustable track.

Take the dinner plates you want to set on edge and measure them? See how much space they need and then space the shelves accordingly.

Mine are set at 13.75 inches apart....they are adjustable, if necessary.

I'm 5'2" and I'm actually going with cabinets 24" off the counter, (which will be 35.5" high) with a 10" deep floating shelf below it at 15" . My reasoning, besides the fact that I really really like that look, is that a lot of the daily use stuff that would go on the bottom shelf will go on the open shelf, and the the bottom shelf of the raised up cabinet is still several inches lower than the current 2nd shelf. So I will actually be able to reach more than in the existing cabinets which are about 17". Plus Sektion cabinets are 15" deep, and at 18", I think they kind of loom over the counter. It's a narrow galley kitchen, so pushing the cabinets up will open things up visually. And yes, even as a short person I absolutely care if the appliances fit under the cabinets. The 15" shelf height was specifically chosen so that the kitchenaid can fit under it. It won't live on the counter, but when it is out I want to be able to slide it back out of the way temporarily. The only thing that won't fit is the blender with the jar on, but that's the one thing I don't care about.

Ideefixe, I assume you are talking to me b/c I am the only one who didn't like the boxes. (Well, I like the boxes, just not in the china cabinet.) I don't think an object has to be pricey or antique to be displayed, but everytime I see those boxes, I picture a husband yelling "Honey, where did you put the stamps?" I think it is because the largest box has that silver rivet or snap on the side. They remind me of the canvas boxes that I just purchased at Target for my stationery supplies. They are pretty and functional, but their function doesn't seem suited to a formal dining room. Everything else in the OP's dining room is so polished and refined, the boxes feel like the odd man out. Just wanted to clarify so you wouldn't think that I'm a dollar-sign snob.

ni 2006 -- as to your question about whether cabinets come with the light rail: It depends on who is making your cabinets. For many cabinet companies, it is an option. My advise to you is to make sure you resolve that issue as you are designing your kitchen and cabinets, and not afterward, like we did. While we love our finished kitchen, our cabinet maker messed up and didn't account for our undercabinet lighting, which was mentioned in our contract and everything. The electrician installed the lighting like he was supposed to, but we are still fighting with the cabinet maker to install a rail to hide the lighting. We just want a simple inch-and-a-quarter plain rail around the bottom of the cabinets to hide the lights (that's how much they show). We may end up doing it ourselves. Our cabinets are 18 inches above our counter, so an inch and a quarter won't be so much to take away from that, although I would have preferred that it would be that much space after the light rail. It was one of a million details in our house remodel that I didn't pay enough attention to, and now here we are, but I think it's going to be okay. So bottom line is, decide on that now, before it is too late and you are left with few choices. Make sure everyone is on board: cabinet maker/company, electrician, etc.

I also drooled over that wood when we did our last kitchen but I couldn't convince DH. I'll just have to drool over yours bbtrix. As for aisle width and holidays, if someone gets in your way, soho them away! It won't kill you or them :-). Our largest gathering so far has been 17, and it was no problem even with people on the kitchen side of the island (admittedly, I was just serving at that point, not cooking, but still...

Thank you. Right now my china is packed and I'd like to get the cabinet ready before I get the boxes out so there is less chance of breaking the china. It's Noritake, so probably around 10-12 inches. My everyday plates are 10.5 inches and I think my china plates are a bit bigger.

I like the way someone stacked their oval tureen on their platters. I don't have a tureen, but I have several platters. The smaller ones are probably 12-14 inches across?

Please take pics of your repurposed piece. I think if I had platters that were wider than plates I would want at least one shelf one inch taller so I could display the different shape. My curio is too small for my platters.

Well, this isn't working out as I would like. Here is one piece of the unit as it was built (but without the shelf in the center section.

And here is one where I added the track for adjustable shelves, and one shelf. I found my dinner plates but haven't found the other plates yet. The distance betwee the top shelf and the top of that section is 11 inches. My plates are 10.5" and there seems to be enough room to get them in & out.

The problem is that there is only 17 inches left on the bottom which is not enough for another shelf. With the shelf in the middle, there is plenty of room to stand plates above and below, but a lot of wasted space and not a lot of room for stacked plates. I routered in a couple of grooves for plates on the shelf, but no way to do that on the fixed bottom shelf. I'd have to put them on stands, or nail a piece of trim onto the shelf. Or maybe someone here has another idea?

I put my largest platter in the top section with my oval bowls and gravy bowl, but the bowls can go anywhere.

Right now these two pieces of the unit are in my breakfast room, but I'll put them in the dining room later, and put glass doors on the middle and top sections. IF, it works for a china cabinet. Right now, I'm not crazy about the distance between shelves.

And here it is with another shelf. It's not a tall space between the two shelves, 4.5", just enough to put the remaining stack of plates.

What do you think? Is there a way to make this work, or should I try to repurpose them in another way?
