Optimal Distance Between Island and Perimeter
Comments (9)It is 48" between my range wall and my island, and I feel like it is a bit too wide. I am sure the designer did it like that so if I were working at the island, someone could easily walk past me to get to the fridge. It is nice having the wide aisle for parties...I have been to parties at friend's homes and been stuck behind an island talking to someone...and the island was so long there was no escape route! :) For everyday life, though, 48" is a bit too wide for me....See MoreDistance between range and island
Comments (16)Not just back to back, but with the dishwasher open and/or the oven. Its not a problem if one cook is sautéing and the other is next to the sink making a salad. But I am often cooking on top of the range while my husband is rinsing and loading the dw. Our range and sink are offset so we are not back to back. If the range and sink were lined up, 4' wouldn't work at all and 5' would be tights for us. DW door is 30", oven door about 2'. I'm small but I move around a lot at the stove; Hubby is just a big guy. When he leans over to load DW he always puts his leg out. If you have the space I'd prefer the work areas off set or if back to back at least 5-1/2' for two cooks....See MoreHelp with Kitchen layout! Maximum distance between cabs and island?
Comments (3)It leads to a covered patio which also connects to our garage. So no, unfortunately it can't really be moved. We discussed replacing it with a smaller door since it is the main reason the kitchen is so wide, but our house is brick so this would require masonry patch work on the exterior which isn't really in the budget right now. Plus, it is the main source of natural light for the kitchen because the sink window is very small....See MoreWhat's the ideal distance between an island and adjacent counter?
Comments (4)Far too close especially for two important items. 42” minimum aisles obstruction to obstruction (meaning stove handle to face of counter on sink) 48” is better, I have 5’ and love it as the dishwasher can be open and the stove is still accessible....See Morekksmama
