cotton blanket...a success story..

I have needed a light cotton blanket for our bed ,wanted one for years and yesterday seemed to be the day I needed to get out and walk through stores. I saw one at T J Maxx. It is a Ralph Lauren and is 100% cotton full/queen size. It was 25.00. I brought it home and washed it as directed. It says delicate and I decided to go along with that and not let it spin/wash too hard. It did take a long time to dry on the med. setting but they said not to use hot.

I have to say it is lovely. Soft and it didn't shrink at all nor is it the least bit misshapen. I am so pleased. It was perfect last night . I had the windows open and their was a light rain falling. I slept so well. So if you too are in the market for a soft beautifully made cotton blanket...check your local Tj Maxx.

As an aside Sierra Trading Post has a lot of beautiful matalasse on special right now. I have purchased it from them before and been very very pleased with the quality. c

You painted a perfect picture in my mind! Actually makes me WANT rain...and my bed! Hope I can find a blanket like yours. I was just at my local TJ's yesterday...

We always have a cotton blanket on our bed. Never use a comforter or duvet, etc. as cover - always sheets, a cotton blanket, and for our coldest temps, a quilt or heavier blanket on top. This time of year we have cotton sheets and a lightweight cotton blanket. Winter we might actually move up to flannel sheets. LOL

You are getting some of the same rain as us Caroline - We've actually had rain every day this week so far and the last two days our high has been 80ish. Of course by the weekend we're to be about 10 degrees warmer, but we will no longer be in the red on our rainfall. Predictions this week are that corn/soybean crops may not only be at a 10-20% loss rather than 100%.

I don't think tyclnx is saying that one can define organic gardening anyway one wants to. The poster is pointing out that people who aren't gardening organically, sometimes claim they are organic gardeners. People garden organically for various reasons. Some are following regulations because they cannot sell their produce as organic otherwise. People like me, chemically sensitive people, grow our own to get away from chemicals as much as possible. I think anyone who even considers organic gardening does have the hope to help prevent further pollution, or violation, of our environment. If you create your own compost, you are contributing much less to the garbage landfills than the average American. It isn't possible to be fanatical on the subject without driving oneself to insanity. As tclynx stated, I, too, will compost banana peels from conventionally grown bananas. But most of the produce I purchase is labelled "organic", so few non-organic kitchen scraps are going into my compost. I don't use chemical fertilizers or pesticides in my garden. If a person doesn't know that cotton is a heavily sprayed crop, using cotton burr compost compromises an organic objective. I do my own composting, but I cannot create as much as I need for my garden. Therefore, I also purchase commercial compost. I garden organically but I cannot claim that my garden is organic (according to standards and regulations). I have only had control of this land for five years. I don't know what was used on this land in years gone by. Luckily, I have no fear of ovespray drifting onto my land from conventional farmers. There are no farms in the area. Hamiltongardner, thanks for the definition of Hamas and Hezbolla. I don't see how it applicable to organic gardening. I think somebody is just bandying terms about to appear in the know. As for the perpetrators of Genetically Modified plants. Those fools are a threat to life on Earth. Their plants produce sterile seeds, as well as requiring copious amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Monsanto and other GM companies are trying to gain monopoly of the world's food resources. Nothing about what they are doing is for the betterment of humankind, as kimmsr stated, it is all about capitalism. The crops grown by one GM farmer can cross-pollinate an area of at least 50 miles diameter, which could contaminate all other farms in the area, causing their crops to have sterile seeds. Lorna

Hummingbird House and Cotton Nesting Dispenser

Having read some of the comments above I am horrified. Someone commented about putting this nesting house on their patio. A mother hummingbird will abandon the nest, even with eggs or hatched eggs, if frightened by someone coming too close. I also saw someone say to offer pet hair. That should only be done if the pet hasn't been treated with flea and tick spray or shampoo. Yarn shouldn't be offered either as many birds have lost feet and legs due to being tangled in it. On another site I saw someone say to offer dryer lint. That is one of the worst things to offer. Dryer lint has no structure and will fall apart once it's been wet and then dries, plus it will grow mold and has chemicals in it from soap and softener. All of these quick cute make a buck ideas are for humans not hummingbirds. The only safe thing to offer them is cotton balls that they can pull tiny bits from to line nests. All the rest should be kept away from them.

Good morning Katrina! Cotton root rot is a fungal infection of the soil for which there is no well-known chemical treatment. It is very persistent in the soil and pretty much wiped out the cotton crop once grown in many southern states. Millions of dollars have been spent studying it, but no real solution has been found. One researcher at Texas A&M has had some success in recent years with a combination of encapsulated (slow-release) nitrogen fertilizer in combination with certain commercial fungicides and the addition of various minerals he has found to be deficient in soil infected with cotton root rot. One reason cotton root rot is such a problem is that it is able to lie dormant in the soil for a long time, perhaps many decades. The best solutions are to try to acidify your soil, since it thrives in soils with a pH of 7.0 to 8.5. I have had some success in controlling it, but not eliminating it, by working large amounts of compost, peatmoss, greensand and other amendments into the soil. Using 1 lb. of ammonium sulfate per 100 square feet of soil twice annually helps, but there is no guarantee. Improving drainage also helps, but does not eliminate the fungas. I don't know if hot compost would help. I tried it one year with fresh cow manure, and all I got was every weed known to mankind. :) One of the main treatments for cotton root rot in areas where field crops are grown is to grow various monocots, like sorghum and corn, and till them into the soil once they are mature. This seems to help slow down, but not completely eliminate, the fungal disease. It is not a practical solution for the average landscape, though. Growing up in Texas where the main crop was once cotton, and my daddy's family were once cotton farmers, I knew all about cotton root rot long before I experienced it firsthand myself. When I lived in Fort Worth, I listened to Neil Sperry's radio gardening show from the time he began it in the late 1970s to the time I moved here. Countless times I heard him diagnose certain types of sudden plant death as cotton root rot, and most of the time the gardeners involved simply didn't want to accept his diagnosis--I assume because none of us wants to have a disease in our gardens for which there is no simple cure! When I began planting here and had cotton root rot problems, I was just sick about it. Over the years I have worked hard to improve the soil in the area where I have had the problems, but the cotton root rot still rears its ugly head every now and then. With regards to composted cotton burs, I have never heard of any problems with them being a carrier of cotton root rot. As far as I understand it, the cotton root rot attacks and destroys the roots of affected plants but does not travel up into the plant system. Infected plants die because they can no longer receive nutrition via their now-decimated roots. I think it unlikely that you could ever find any trace of cotton root rot in composted cotton burrs. Cotton is still successfully grown in the High Plains of Texas, and one of the by-products of that plant would be the composted cotton burs. I believe no one in Texas would process and sell those burs if there was any chance whatsoever that cotton root rot could be in them. One of the leading researchers in the area of Cotton Root Rot is Texas A&M University. In reading their data, I have never seen any concern expressed about cotton root rot being transferred via the burs. Cotton root rot seems to be more of a problem in parts of Texas than in Oklahoma, but that doesn't help you if you are in the part of Oklahoma where is has reared its ugly head. Hope this info helps. Alison, they are soft and made of cotton. I should have spread them out for all to see. I got lucky when I posted the pictures because I had a new computer and it has a different operating system than my old one. This one has windows Vista. Isn't it wonderful to find the perfect bedding? I have a wonderful 100% linen blanket that I love to use for summer. It's a discontinued RLauren that I found on eBay. It says to dry clean, but I wash mine. I just have to be careful to not overdry it.

danielle...you go on an take a look. Also at Tuesday morning as they sometimes have them...or Home Goods if there is one near you. it sure is the nicest blanket I have .

tina we are in severe drought here...this would be about the 5th year. We have had enough rain though lately that the garden looks pretty good and the lawn too . I hope that it cont. The crops in the US are really really suffering with this heat.

Fun I sure would love to find some real linen bedding. if you ever see any please shoot out a post here or an email to me and I will take a look. I haven't looked on ebay in quite a while so may give it a go. I did see some on Etsy but it is usually so pricey.

I just love my blanket though and the price was sure great !!

Trailrunner, There is a new membership site that has linen sheets for a semi-reasonable price. Membership is $9.99 per month and I think can be cancelled at any time. I haven't bought anything because it's not my style, but I was tempted by the linen sheets, especially because they had a one-day sale last week of $75 off any purchase. thank you fun !! It doesn't say where those are made...may look into it though. I did see fabric on Etsy that is linen and is 110 in wide just for sheets and duvets ! It sounds lovely. I have a seamstress so may go that route.

jamies !! you are precious ...that is the truth. I wish I had the old one's my mom had when we were little...sigh. They would bring me a lot of comfort right now. Thankyou for the smile c

Great find, Caroline! DD & I were in TJ Maxx today (as well as many other stores-LOL) and I wish I would have seen those blankets, too. DH is on a tear and is determined we need a new mattress and a good cotton blanket for these Summer months. He's right. I'll make a point to get back there next Tuesday. Thanks!

Lynn...I hope you can find one. I am so impressed with it. I followed the inst. when washing/drying to a T and I think that has helped. I read reviews on Amazon about the ones they have and I believe washing/drying is a cause of problems if you are too harsh. It held its shape perfectly.

Good luck on the mattress thing. We returned 3 !! If you stand the new mattresses up on their sides...as in when they are being moved..you can see the guts of the mattress is very very loose. Not at all like they used to be . We were so upset with the first ones as you could see the outline of our bodies in the mattress long after we got out of bed. These were not cheap either. We finally took the advice of the salesperson and got the most firm one they make . I then got a lovely mattress cover from T J Maxx LOL...it has made all the difference. We love the new mattress. I didn't think I would but after a few nights we both decided this was the best one we have ever had. So do take a look at the extra firm when you shop..and stand the mattress up on its side :) c

I have a Ralph Lauren cotton blanket on every bed in the house. We use them year round. They're the perfect weight!

We have RL bedding in the MBR and have used one of their cotton blankets for years. I spotted 2 at Home Goods a few years ago and bought/stored for later. Love them year round!
