WANTED: A Box, a Picture and A Story to Tell

A little while ago I was in the shower and heard the doorbell ring. I came out and DH had placed a package on the cabinet delivered by UPS so it said. I said "that's strange, they never deliver until around 5:30 PM." DH said that when the doorbell rang and he went to the door it was just in time to see a lady jogger leaving our driveway who had brought the box. It had obviously been left at the wrong house. I looked and sure enough it was from Kathleen.

Kathleen really outdone herself. The first box she sent contained two four piece sets of beautiful leaf plates and a non-stick apple tart pan. I've never owned a tart pan so I can't wait to make an apple tart. I need recipes please. Also those plates with the beautiful brown veining that does not show up well in the photo are going to be wonderful to use for one of my ladies luncheons. Thank you Kathleen! Now, wouldn't you think that's three items? I did, so I posted that I had my swap box. But no, Kathleen tells me that the eight plates count as only one item and there's another box coming. Here's the contents from the first box.

The second box contained four oversized, lovely 100% cotton, blue and white dishtowels. Someone told her that was my favorite kitchen colors and they were so right. With the towels and just in time for Thanksgiving was a cute little turkey handle spreader. She packed it with a copy of a newspaper from where she lives and a nice note telling me I'm not the only Irish lass on the forum and a very special personal note. Thank you for working so diligently to put together such a wonderful package Kathleen. I'm so glad you didn't find a 2.5 quart pot.

Oh, I love dishtowels and those are gorgeous! I really like the plates and the fall theme. I don't have a tart pan, but having one would sure motivate me to start baking in it! Lovely package Kathleen!

Oh so beautiful Beverly!!! I really love those leaf plates, and they are versatile enough to be used all year long! The tart pan is terrific, I do make tarts on occasion and that's one sweet pan:-) The dishtowels look beautiful, sturdy and absorbent. Kathleen, that's one AWESOME swap box you sent to 'Bama. You did real good, fellow swap virgin. Beverly, enjoy it all. I'll look around for a good tart recipe for you.

Oh, dear! I have lots and lots of these bulbs. Most of them, most admittedly came from Walmart. A word of caution... A red color on the leaves or bulb does NOT necessarily mean Red Blotch. If they are bruised, cut, scaped or damaged in any way, they will get a red mark. That is their nature. Growing them outside, I am used to those marks. Now, if the red marks is accompanied by decay or rot of any kind, then you have a problem, and the problem can be treated. I have yet to find a definitive answer on what Red Blotch really looks like (ie., pics, please!) Be careful not to overtreat bulbs that are simply injured and not diseased. They are two different things. I feel fortunate that I have done as well as I have. Elvas caused me some rot problems. Nymph did the same. But they were both crushed by a 70+ year old pecan tree during Katrina. Both survived afer being cracked open and the cuts and bruises turning blood red, then they started to show signs of rot. I cleaned them up, let them dry out, then all was well. Not to say that they weren't set back some. They have been. Me, myself, and I... I don't give up that easily. The bulbs are still alive and producing pups. Good Luck!

LOL, just saw this thread was popping up again. Buford, I also FREQUENTLY use the timer feature when I'm out using drip irrigation, soaker hoses, etc....I've got so many all over the place that it's impractical right now to buy timers for every single one. That's a great idea about the zippered or velcro pockets. I will only wear blue jean pants in the garden, even in hot weather just because I'm always on my knees so pants and sometimes knee pads protect from sharp objects. And I don't want to contend with bug bites either which they prevent. I'm pretty handy though, I bet I could sow on my own zippered pocket if I couldn't find any cheapo jeans that had it already. Herboil, that's an interesting theory about the cell phone waves. I had heard that idea before several years ago when people were starting to realize the honey bee populations were dropping. I hadn't heard much about it lately.

Lukki, such a great idea for a post - thank you! This post got me to finally set up a Flickr account to be able to post pics, somethinhg I've meant to do for a long time. So, here's my motley crew, who keep my life interesting, oh-so-busy and never, ever a 'normal day'. The matriarch is a Siamese mix, Annie, who at 20 years is still going strong, despite failing eyesight and being nearly stone deaf. I've had her since she adopted us at about 6 weeks old. My beloved Chow Chih Nu, who lost her battle with lymphoma cancer at 13 (one of the hardest times of my life) - 2 years later and I still miss her every day. She was a treasured member of the family for 13 years. In memory of Chih Nu, a year ago we adopted Tuscon, a BMC, rescued from the kill list from a high kill shelter - this is her at 4 mos, curled up in a cat bed. And a recent picture of her at 14 mos., in a rare calm moment (she's a tremendously high energy girl!) So high energy, in fact, we decided she needed a 'sister' to romp with, so a couple of months ago we adopted 4 mos old Sierra, a Chow pup. This is her doing her impersonation of a calm puppy - trust me, it's just an act! These two have to qualify as the world's worst garden dogs - it's amazing the damage they've done to my garden while romping at full speed! But, hey - they're also sweet, loving and true clowns that make me laugh daily, so I look at it this way - now there's no reason to not hire out the mulching, because there's nothing the yard guys can do to my plants that these two haven't already done! And then there's my Yellow Naped Amazon, Coqui - he's at the very center of the universe, just ask him and he'll confirm it! He's 10 years old now, and I've had him since he was 6 mos old - he really, truly does think he's in charge, and is often heard telling the pups to 'stop, stop' when they're barking or romping in the family room. The final furred/feathered member of the family is Aradia, my 16 year old Persian mix. It's impossible to take a good picture of her because she walks right up to the lens, even of a phone. She's been battling hyperthroidism for the past 2 years, and even with twice daily doses of thyroid meds has dropped from 16 lbs down to about 4.5 lbs. Think of the "Grisabella, the Glamour Cat' song from Cats and that's a good description of my poor Rady-girl. She knows she's still beautiful, and so do we. So, that's my merry band of hooligans - the Koi don't count in this because they stay nicely in their ponds and are only demanding at feeding time. :-)

Don't know exactly what a "ghost" is, but I do think (even as a professional scientist) there are things we cannot always understand, of a nature we might call supernatural. . 1) I am a Pagan and a Wiccan. Yes it is NOT contradictory. My parents were out of town for a long weekend and I (while freshly employed was still searching for my first home - mid 1980s). So, I was doing a house cleansing. The only other sentient form of life in the house they had then was our cat, who was sleeping on my bed. (Okay there were mice in the drop ceilings downstairs.. at least at one point.) I went through the house banishing unhappy & unpleasant energies. Now, "feeling" things shift really means nothing when it comes to determine reality or verifiable proof, as I very well understand. I left the laundry region of the house. Suddenly, I heard something crash behind me. To explain the laundry facility. It wasn't something that would fly in ideal GW/H design, but there was a stackable washer/drier, and at least 4 feet away was the cat's litter box. Earlier, I'd put a heavy duty plastic glass atop the dryer part, centered. One of those with a double shell so you can keep beverages cold longer. Shortly later, I came back - that plastic glass was sitting in the litter pan. I checked on the cat - HE hadn't moved. There were no air currents in that room. I was home alone, and I can't picture any resident mice doing this! Four feet? Was glad I was doing the cleansing. 2) Mom passed away on the Ides of March, 2001. Dad was an avowed agnostic seriously verging on atheist. Their anniversary was May 17th, and would have been 51 years of them being married. On May 16th the kitchen clock they'd bought together stopped working. It was electric, no batteries. He showed me on the 17th when I'd come over to be with him on the anniversary. He didn't unplug it. On the 17th, 48 hours after the clock had stopped, it began ticking and keeping time again. I think this kept him being more agnostic than atheist for the next decade. But I am not really sure what he thought as he eventually developed dementia. Not my story, but I believe my friends. M & T lived in an old 40s apartment complex, seriously falling part. This was in the late 60s or maybe 1970. They had little income, and the landlord was trash. The apartment had a doorbell that did not work. The place was heated by gas. One night in the middle of the night, they were wakened by the sound of the (non-workable) doorbell ringing. They awoke and noticed something was wrong. There was a whiff of gas. They got out of there, and raised the alarm for everyone else. Yes, there was a serious gas leak that otherwise might have killed them. Also while they lived there (before and after that happened) they had a cat that kept rubbing itself up against non-existent legs. They did some research on the building, and discovered something to the effect that the original architect had built this complex early in his careet, and had done his best to make it the best place possible. He'd died young. My friends believed that his spirit still hung around and provided their timely escape from deadly poisoning. ^^^^ What do I think about things? I am willing to entertain various explanations, but I don't really think science is quite ready to explain it all. (But what science does, it can do well.)

Oh I agree, those plates will be perfect for your ladies luncheon and I've never seen an apple shaped tart pan. Leave it to Kathleen, LOL.

The towels are beautiful colors and I like the little turkey spreader too. I don't suppose the cake came with it? (grin)

I love the leaf plates and just bought a similar set today! I'm going to use mine year round!

And the tart pan is so unique and cute too.

I am a kitchen towel "collector" but yours are just gorgeous! I can't quite make out the label, what brand are they?

Super job Kathleen, but I would not expect anything less!

excellent swap package. i now am on a quest for these plates, which i just love and to get 8 of them, how perfect is that? i agree, the tart pan is great and can't wait to hear about your baking success. and what's not to love about a good dish/kitchen towel.

Beautiful leaf plates, they will be great for the holidays. Can I borrow the apple tart pan (just joking)? I need to make one with all the apples I picked. And who can't use new dishtowels. Nice stuff!

While I'm going to miss the skeletons I truly enjoyed the saga of the wandering box. Well worth the wait, too! What a lovely box...love the pan, LOVE the dishes (diiiiiishes) and the WS towels are just great. Fabulous job, Kathleen!
Now tell the truth- you were expecting the missing box to be male model sized & have breathing holes poked into it, weren't you?

Well that would have explained why it took so darn long to get there! 8 days by United Parcel!! The guy could have walked there! Building his muscles as he went along! LOL

Are those the really soft, cotton-y towels? They look wonderful!

And the plates are really special. I don't know if I would have seen the tart pan was in the shape of an apple if you hadn't mentioned it -- but apple tart sounds like a wonderful way to christen the pan!

Alison, they are soft and made of cotton. I should have spread them out for all to see. I got lucky when I posted the pictures because I had a new computer and it has a different operating system than my old one. This one has windows Vista. Anyway they downloaded totally different from my old system. Now I'm trying to download and post a picture of the towels and I'm having all kinds of problems.
