First sewing machine for grandchild??

My six year old grand dau wants a sewing machine for her birthday. I was wondering if any of you have experience with the Sew Easy by White that HSN.com sells. I read the reviews over there, one person said it was junk, others seemed to think it was ok. It is 20 dollars, or they have another for 30 or so. Is this just throwing away money? Should I try to find a basic machine for 100 and go with that? There is no machine in their home now.

The problem with a sewing machine that sells for $20 or $30 new is that it doesn't have very many features and it can't be of very high quality.

If the thing is hard to use, it will turn off your grand daughter (or anyone else) to sewing. If you have to fight the machine, you won't enjoy sewing on it.

When a standard clean and adjust service at the local sewing machine dealer costs $60 to $80, would you ever bother to have a $20 sewing machine fixed?

A couple of suggestions:

Go down to your local sewing machine dealer and ask to see their used machines. Explain what you are buying and why and what your price point is. Depending on what is in the shop at the moment, they may have a used machine in your price range. See if they will include lessons for your grand daughter on how to use the machine. Depending on your dealer, they may also offer "how to sew" lessons.

As far as inexpensive new machines for beginners, Janome has some models that are popular and generally get good reviews.

The advantage of going to a dealer is that you can try out the machine and judge whether it is sturdy and easy to use. Your dealer will most likely provide some other services that you won't get buying online. They want you to come back to them for your next sewing machine or sewing tool purchase.

OR, Buy online, there are some great deals. Avoid anything marketed as a toy machine or a child's machine.

Check out AllBrands or other online vendors for machines in your price range. Of course, you won't be able to test them in person.

My 6 yo son uses my Featherweight. I guess I've lost custody of that machine since he thinks I bought it for him. It is perfect for a child. He can now thread it and reload the bobbin. At his age, he's very happy with just a straight stitch.

I picked it up for $175 on eBay and it came with the original manual and many different feet like the ruffler, hem stitcher and bias tape applying thingy.

My other kids (age 9 and 12) use my Bernette and an old Neechi. I think an older workhorse is really good for kids. You can even check on eBay and find old hand crank machines. No electricity needed. They are beautiful, also.

It's my goal for the upcoming winter to learn how to use the treadle I bought last year. I've never used one. Although my grandmother had one, I never saw her using it. I'm sure she sewed a lot in earlier years, having 12 kids. By the time I came along (maybe the 12th grandchild), I think she was just kind of worn out. Once I get so I can sew a straight line of stitches, I'd like to try free-motion quilting with it. A couple of years ago, I went to a quilt show in Wisconsin where Damascusannie (she used to be a frequent poster here--collected antique machines including a Damascus) was demonstrating FMQ on her treadle. That was when I decided I needed a treadle and wanted to learn to quilt with it. My treadle (named her BellaRuby as she's a beautiful Red Eye Singer) only has the regular foot and it's a back-clamp one. So after learning to make it go and before challenging myself with FMQ, I need to get an appropriate foot. Likely I'll have to convert the machine to a side-attaching bar as finding the back-clamping foot might be tough. Treadle on has some excellent instructions (and knowledgeable members) to help me with this conversion.

Experience with Elna sewing machine?

I have owned 4 Elna sewing and 2 sergers..I still have 2 machines and a serger. All were originals made by Elna in Sweden except my recent purchase of the 7100 made by Janome. They were all great--very long lasting and dependable. I still have my Elna Carina with air pedal in my closet, but the 7100 is a different animal...has a bigger throat for quilting and only does strait stitching. However, I have been very pleased with it's performance. I would suggest you look at the Pfaff,,I have 2 of these and they are very good machines. They have built in IDT so you never need to buy a walking foot--and you can choose the features you want. Brother makes very friendly machines also--I have 2 of their embroidery models and I love, love love them!

Hi There Lazygardens, I ended up taking it to our not so local repairman, I had never used him before, but because he was a long standing Singer dealer, and sounded so good on the phone I decided to at least to present the machine, and see what he had to say. I immediately noticed his walls and entire shop had Featherweights and more. After explaining everything to him, he ask me if I put the needle in right. I chuckled and said yes, it won't be that simple. So he says "in cases like this I can repair it now, on the spot for $30.00" I said "go for it, with a huge smile. It took him about 15 minutes though...and he also addressed the tension. So after I ask him "was it the timing? He said yes it was. So I had troubleshot it correctly, and learned a little by just watching him. What a guy. His repair shop was wide open to whomever came in. It was like a page in time warp going in there. Just wanted to let you know how it turned out. I am so pleased. The thrift shop Manager had told me before I had taken it in, to just see if I could get even $100.00 for it. I just was not ready to give up on it, I may have to eat the $30.00 repair bill, as i did not get a go ahead, but thats OK because MCC does alot of good work around the world and locally. I just can't tell you how good it feels to "get er done". Someone will love this machine. I don't know about all the white featherweights but I do know this one is impossible to trace the serial No. with any accuracy, and it does not have gears, it is belt driven. So I have at least learned something. It doe's not have the mechanical solidness of others in the featherweight class. However pretty it is, it is just a collector item. I would not recommend it for a quilter or serious sewer. Ginger

Also concerning the WIKI Free Pattern Downloads I have only presented excerpts from a very long article by vavoomvintage.net---I would recommend going to this site and reading fully what she has to say. So here are the snippets. "Let's talk about what the Vintage Sewing Patterns Wikia is and isn't. Even though you can't download 83,500 patterns from it (bummer, right?!), how you can use it and even get patterns from it...because it really is a cool thing! The Vintage Sewing Patterns Wikia is a collaborative effort from sewing pattern collectors over the globe to categorize and document patterns that are 25 years and older. They upload images of the covers and descriptions. Each entry has spots for blog posts reviewing the patterns so you can see what they look like when sewn and if the person who made it has any tips for you as you navigate sewing the garment. Some entries also have links to purchase the original paper patterns from various sellers online. The people who have contributed their time, knowledge and effort to this project are amazing! It is not a source to download a massive collection of vintage sewing patterns. Someone wrote an article with a very misleading headline and it has spread like wildfire all over social media. Many patterns are still under copyright (I'm looking at you, Vogue) and scanning/remastering these delicate paper patterns for the general public would be an unbelievably big undertaking. I wouldn't buy a $20 piece of plastic junk. I would invest in a second hand machine from a dealer......or if you are experienced enough or have a friend who is a sewer, ask around to see if anyone has an older working machine they want to part with. Garage sales are also an option, or even the newspaper. If you aren't a sewer have someone with you who is and can check out the machine BEFORE you buy. Some people have gotten great buys that way. IMHO, I go with a dealer who has older model machines and will give service, a lesson or two and the machine has some basic things like extra bobbins, perhaps a few feet and maybe some oil. DO NOT BUY any machine if there is NO manual. Some manuals are easy to find second hand and some are not......the manual is worth it's weight in gold in the long run. Always keep machine and manual together so they are handy. So I vote no for a piece of plastic junk that will frustrate rather than educate.

I found great older sewing machines at estate sales. Seems that no one appreciates their mom or grandmother's sewing machines. I paid about $25 for each, some in cabinets. All they needed was a little TLC, that is, cleaning, oiling and then they purred great!

Always take fabric and thread with you in order to test the machines before purchasing.

few years ago I bought a perfectly good used machine at a local Goodwill store for $15. Sometimes I have run across one at a thrift store or garage sale. you might check local high schools and vocational schools that have home economics type classes. they usually replace their machines on a regular basis. may you could find a good used one
