Ok, Joesr: the machine shown was made by the Domestic Sewing Machine Company and sold by Sears Roebuck. The decals pattern is called "Scarab" by collectors. According to "The Encyclopedia of Antique Sewing Machines" by Charles B. Law, this model was sold from the 1910s through the early 1930s. However, that particular cabinet was sold in the early 1920s. This is known as a parlor cabinet and was Sear's top-of-the-line model in the early 20s. If your's is in comparable condition to the one shown, it has a fair amount of value. Here in Wisconsin, where treadles are common ($25-50 will usually get you a pretty nice one), I'd expect to pay $100-125 for this machine. Depending on where you live, it could be worth a bit more than that, but probably not more than $200. In this case, the value is almost completely in the cabinet. Domestic was founded in 1864 in Norwalk, OH and continued to make sewing machines until they were purchased by White in 1924. White continued to make this model after the merger, so my friends, Katie who is doing White research and Kelly who is researching Domestic, are in constant communication trying to sort out just when a particular head was made. Hi, I just found this thread. GW...I have just had exactly the same experience as you. I bought a Singer 15K80 in a cabinet. It has an old black motor at the back. No smoke came out of it, but the machine as a whole did smell when I used it. I'm assuming it's just grubby anyway. I cleaned the machine and oiled it...and it ran beautifully. The timing's still bang on and the stitches are great. Also, the motor is far more quiet than I was expecting. However, I did notice small white sparks in exactly the same place as you when looking from exactly the same angle. My first thought was...never use it again and find a crank, as the machine is so good. I've since found posts on a few forums where owners of similar machines as these say a few sparks are normal. I'm still not sure what to do, so if you found a solution to your problem or know any more about these sparking motors, please let me know. Also, if anyone else is watching the thread and can give me any reassurance, that'd be great too. I already have two Pinnocks and they both have Sew-Tric motors, which also spark as the pedal is first depressed, but do not spark while the machine is running. If you have a machine that is working, hang on to it. There are hardly any available on line or in stores except expensive specialty machines. You can't even order black or white thread from Amazon without a wait. I have been sewing on my 1975 Singer Genie until the bobbin winder broke last week. There is a rubber tire-type fitting that makes it engage the wheel when you push it over and I fear it has crumbled with age. Not sure I could find a part and who would repair it these days? So I ordered a new Singer One from Amazon and within hours the vendor cancelled it. Managed to get another Singer Curvey 8763 ordered and delivered. It is now "currently not available" as are most of the machines below $800. And although the auto needle threader is awesome, I love the light and the ease of threading... it doesn't sew as well as the old machine. It is slower, the foot pedal is tiny and this "always stop with needle in the up position" sucks as it will take ANOTHER stitch forward or in reverse when you stop. So I could probably send it back but who knows when they will get more machines in stock to choose from? I could keep sewing on the old Singer as I have learned to wind bobbins with my electric drill. It is a toss up!
