White Sewing Machine Company Sent Me a Manual!! FREE!!

Hi folks! I saw someone wanted a White sewing machine manual, and I'm here to say that YOU DO NOT NEED TO BY ONE FROM ONLINE RIPOFF ARTISTS!!! I wrote to the White company (just google it, you'll get their URL) and asked and they nicely sent me a PDF manual for my 1505. The very next morning after my evening request.

I can upload it somewhere if anyone knows where.

Would you be willing to email me a copy of the pdf manual you received from white. My mother-in-law recenlty gave me a White 1505 sewing machine, but couldn't find the manual. When I contacted the company they told me that it would cost $13.50 plus tax plus $6.50 shipping and handling for the manual.

I'd really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to using the machine.

Ok, Joesr: the machine shown was made by the Domestic Sewing Machine Company and sold by Sears Roebuck. The decals pattern is called "Scarab" by collectors. According to "The Encyclopedia of Antique Sewing Machines" by Charles B. Law, this model was sold from the 1910s through the early 1930s. However, that particular cabinet was sold in the early 1920s. This is known as a parlor cabinet and was Sear's top-of-the-line model in the early 20s. If your's is in comparable condition to the one shown, it has a fair amount of value. Here in Wisconsin, where treadles are common ($25-50 will usually get you a pretty nice one), I'd expect to pay $100-125 for this machine. Depending on where you live, it could be worth a bit more than that, but probably not more than $200. In this case, the value is almost completely in the cabinet. Domestic was founded in 1864 in Norwalk, OH and continued to make sewing machines until they were purchased by White in 1924. White continued to make this model after the merger, so my friends, Katie who is doing White research and Kelly who is researching Domestic, are in constant communication trying to sort out just when a particular head was made. Coronado vintage sewing machine information

I don't know where I get my information that I seem to have in my head about Coronado, several sources really. Some of it comes from someone who did a video report pre-internet that I have seen, There does seem to be a dearth of information about Coronado. So I think this might be a good place to put out what I think I know, and maybe some one who does the research can correct it. Coronado was a little ambitious company that wanted to be a part of the modern industrialization of the 1800s, in a large part led by Singer, but they did not set out to be a Singer cloning company; They were into metal work. They had a small plant (picture a brick warehouse with a small foundry and a work yard). They were from the start looking for a good product that would make them good money. It didn't go very well; they did piece work, but their main stay, low profit products were toys. They were looking for a solid product line when the sewing machine opportunity arrived, which they enthusiastically dived into. They got rid of all their non sewing machine making tooling and they made their first sewing machines in house. At that time they decided that they needed a "brand name". The owner was aware of the conquistador Coronado, and he was infatuated with the Southwest though he had never been there, but mainly he like the way it sounded: "It's a Coronado". Many people do not realize the high drama around sewing machines. Sewing machines led the industrial revolution, especially about machines and factories. Singer might be said to be the first multi-notional :-), and of course while their patents were in force, they had a monopoly. When the patent monopoly ended, a number of firms jumped in the sewing machine manufacturing game, little guys. So then, National Sewing Machine sets out to consolidate American, non-Singer sewing machine manufacturing. Singer's scale and internationalism as well as National Sewing Machine's name made it plausibly a patriotic business operation, but I think it was simple anti-competitive market consolidation. So after WWII National Sewing Machine's function is taken over by Brother, and National Sewing Machine goes out of business. I would not be surprised if National Sewing Machine and Brother had major stockholders in common at that time. So Coronado was all in on being a sewing machine manufacturer, but was not really set up for such mass production, and were approached by National Sewing Machine to have National Sewing Machine make their machines. They didn't really want National Sewing Machine to make their sewing machines, but could see that they would never be able to compete and stay afloat, so they made the deal to badge their machines. This was in the 1800s. All the other cloning companies were bought up or went out of business. Coronado survived, but turned basically into a sales company, but they had a solid contract so they could compete as an indy label. They did make another short lived attempt at doing something on the engineering side. I think the 2 step button holing sewing machine might be the only thing to come out of it. I'm not sure. If anyone knows of another, let me know .. or where a manual to this machine, a #45-1409, S.M,5-1409A can be found . Some investigative reporter wanted to know what happened to Coronado when the department stores closed and the Coronado machines disappeared from the market. He tracked the company down to a one room office in some low rent office building. He finally got a hold of the man running the place, who was seemingly well into retirement. At some point the owner just made a contract with minor department store companies to do the selling and to furnish them with machines made by his suppliers, and he put the business on auto-pilot.

I was intrigued enough to search the ISMACs site. While I found nothing titled "Mercury", I did find this interesting bit of info: Who made my sewing machine? I heard about machines being "badged", what does this mean? In the 1890 to 1940 period there was a fad with large retailers and mail order houses to sell "own brand" sewing machines. To do this they entered into contracts with established sewing machine manufacturers who would supply standard models but with the name of choice substituted for the normal brand name. ISMACS has records of nearly 5000 such "exclusive" names produced by half a dozen makers during this period. The situation is further confused in that retailers might switch makers at the end of a contract period and the same name would then appear on a completely different machine by another manufacturer. Shortly after WW2 the new Japanese sewing machine industry, funded by US aid, flooded machines into America and Europe. Distributors in those countries gave them various western-sounding names to help sales. In the period between 1890 and 1930 many German companies produced machines with no reference to their origin. This was because of a general mistrust of German engineering and, of course, poor public relations following WW1. Their machines were distributed with non-Teutonic-sounding names. 22 years ago, when my daughter was a baby, I wanted to dress her in the beautiful hand smocked clothes that are so popular for little girls in my city (Charleston, SC). My husband and I were living on one salary, and it wasn't a big one, so buying those clothes was out of the question. I learned to smock myself, and then needed to learn to sew so that I could put together the dresses I had smocked. My sweet husband bought me a Montgomery Ward sewing machine for Christmas and I began to learn so sew. Honestly, I can't believe I didn't quit right away, because that sewing machine was the worst piece of junk ever made. The stitches were terrible, and wouldn't hold any adjustments, because the machine was mostly made of plastic. I loved the smocking but I was a terribly frustrated sewer because that machine made the simplest task difficult. After a couple of years of that we spent our entire tax return ($700.00 - a tremendous amount of money for us at the time) on a new Viking machine. What a difference! I couldn't believe how reliable and easy to use that Viking was. I still have that machine and will never get rid of it, unless it is to let my own daughter use it if she wants to. I've recently bought a new Viking that has more capabilities, but it was quite expensive, so I doubt you want to start there for your daughter. I would check out your local sewing or quilting shops and see what they have available. Personally I would stick with a Viking, Elna, or Bernina and I would probably go with the brand that has the most supportive dealer. I would buy a used machine in one of these brands, as the quality will be much higher than if you buy a new machine of lesser quality. I think it is really important to buy from a place that can help her learn to work with her machine, versus a big box store where there will be no support available at all.

I recently contacted the White company in order to obtain a manual for my 1505, and they told me I could purchase one for $10.95 plus $6.50 shipping and handling. I picked up the machine at a yard sale this year for $5 so I have a hard time spending three times that on the manual. Would you be able to email me the pdf you received? I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!

I had the same great service from JUKI in Japan - sent an email and got the manual by mail FREE OF CHARGE..
But, personally, if I were able to get the machine for free or for $5.00..I really wouldn't mind spending a few dollars on the manuel - it still would be a great buy!

I have to assume that you have a problem downloading this manual per the OP's instructions above. If that's the case tell us what keeps you from doing this and maybe someone can help you.

Since White is no longer a company, I did some searching and found that Singer now carries all the manuals for the White line. I was able to download a PDF of model 1422, and I'm sure they have other models available as well. The link for the 1422 model is: http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals/search

When searching for a manual, don't include any letters -- just put in the model number (in this case, 1422).

According to Wikipedia:

"The White line of sewing machines was consolidated into the lower end Husqvarna Viking brand . . . New "White" branded sewing machines models have not been manufactured since the Husqvarna spin off in 2006. Husqvarna Viking, Singer, and Pfaff brands are now all owned by SVP Worldwide. Though not advertised, SVP provides all of their user manuals for all of their brands including the "White" brand through the Singer brand website."

Going to the Singer website and putting "1505" into the search engine for sewing machine manuals, I came up with this:

They're all there. Every model anyone ever asked for on this thread has a manual you can find using that link.
