Something to tide you over: out of control window box

I have a few things in the pipeline, but nothing to report on yet. It's been a busy summer so nothing is completed, let alone begun in some instances. But I thought I'd post this since it's been so long and since it's really all I have to contribute.

Ah! That's what was bothering me about the center cabinet. I agree, I think open shelves will open that area up. I'm not an "open shelf" person, but if you are and you will have them, don't make them "heavy" (that's what the cabinet boxes are doing to them right now). Is this a temporary remodel or the only remodel you plan for many years to come? If temporary for only a couple of years, I would probably skip some of the items in your list and put the money you save toward the full-scale remodel in the future. Only do what you think will (1) make your kitchen function much better and (2) be part of the full-scale remodel (like the sink & faucet...as long as you keep them then!) I would probably just paint the backsplash, not put the time and $$ into it now. If, however, this is the only remodel you plan, then I would do whatever you can w/the $$ you have now...but just what you really want. If there are some things you want but cannot afford right now, wait until you've saved more to do what you really want. Since it's DIY, you can do it piecemeal as you save up $$. As to the cabinets, I could go either way...I do prefer wood (natural or stained), but you have a lot of wood already so painting would probably be OK.

" We tend to run three washes through the machine, with different settings, in a cycle: (1) underwear plus kitchen clean-up cloths and towels, (2) colored laundry, and (3) sheets, pillow cases, and bathroom towels. The wash that I photographed was the underwear/kitchen cycle, the only one of the three that washes in hot water; the other two (warm water) washes get the same borax, but do not get the oxygen bleach, and they produce no more suds than that one does. The Vaska dose was up to the bottom of, but not fully covering, the fill line in the cap of the Vaska jug. It has got our clothes fully clean in every wash cycle that we have put it through so far.

We have 5 cats and 6 boxes. And because a couple of our kitties don't get along, we can't put all the boxes in the utility room. We have 2 in the basement, and four in a room that I use as my office/tv room. Three of the four are tucked into corners, and the fourth is this Hol storage cube from IKEA. I cut a hole into the end for easy access and put a blanket on top - and am looking for fabric so I can put a cute cushion on it instead. I put the whole thing in front of a window and the cats do use it to nap on, however, I have to say, it is the least used box in the house. As mentioned by a couple of other people, a lot of cats just don't like to use a covered box. I also like the looks of the IKEA Hackers Pretty Potty - will have to figure out how I can fit that one in one of these days! Here is a link that might be useful: Hol Storage Cube

Hooray for progress! Dianalo, the next steps are new Formica laminate in Basalt Slate, a new Blanco Silgranit sink in Anthracite, new Delta pull down faucet, and faux tin ceiling tile backsplash in Smoked Pewter. If all goes well, the laminate will be this upcoming weekend. We have looked and looked at under cabinet lighting, but haven't found anything we like. We don't like fluorescent light (especially after a day in the office), and the LED lighting we've seen doesn't cut it either. I love the warm look of incandescent lighting, so I'm hoping the track lights will suffice for now. The last step is to construct a shallow freestanding beadboard cabinet to go on the other side of the fridge and relieve some of the clutter from the open cabinet shelving and make the fridge look more built-in. Much better to build a new cabinet than to stop collecting Fiesta Ware! Pinch Me, this kitchen is a classic, and more importantly, it works. What doesn't show well in the photos is a small pantry to the left, and that makes the kitchen.

And thanks to the awesome nursery in the area, you can find begonias and a mock coleus that will grow in mostly sunny areas. These have been in for a month and a half and they've really taken over and need no maintenance (there is also ivy and asparagus fern in there). Everything else in the summer dies or needs a ton of dead-heading maintenance. Not this stuff. It's a bit overgrown for my sized house but would be perfect on Clinton, Delancey or one of the East-West, tree-named streets.

Everything is growing like crazy in our area because we've had so much rain. That includes the weeds. I have those bright green ipomea in a small planter and they are absolutely booming. When you dig it out in the fall you may find a sweet potato in there.

The front of your house looks lovely. I love your little iron fence. I do enjoy the window boxes on the streets you mentioned. I think Clinton is my favorite, at least one side of it. My parents lived at 20th and Delancey when I was born, a very long time ago. I have vague memories of being there and always take stroll down that block when I'm in the area.

Very pretty !! If you get out for a walk in the area please post some pics of the other window boxes on "slice of life"...I bet others would love to see the pretty area where you live. c
