Lindybarts -- Can you tell me about your wall mount TV?

I saw your beautiful bedroom in another thread. Love your RH furniture! But what caught my eye is your wall mounted TV over the bureau. That's exactly what my husband wants to do with his 42" girlfriend (I refer to all our TVs as his "girlfriends" because their measurements are so much bigger than mine.).

Please tell me what you had to do to the wall to hide all the wires and cables. Who did the work -- a handyman or electrician or both? Do you have any pics of the wires where they come out of the wall? Does your mount swivel? Can you tell me what kind of mount you used?

I've been fighting this with my husband 'cause I didn't think it would look nice at all, but yours looks very clean and simple and not at all "out of place," as I'd imagined it would look. I was also sure that I'd miss the mirror over the bureau, but that hasn't been the case at all since we also have a full-length mirror elsewhere in the room.

Oh, I would like to know this too because our flat screens sit on a console and I'd rather hang them, especially in the bedroom. What did you do with your cable or satellite box and/or dvd player?

ROFL...love the reference to hubby's girlfriend! We built this house so we had the electrician put in the "tube" as he called it for the wires behind the wall. They just come out from the set and feed down the wall inside the tube to the outlet behind the dresser. The components were a sore spot for us as we struggled with what kind of dresser to buy and if we could somehow hide them but we ended up loving this RH dresser and just put them on stop. It doesn't look too awful although I would have prefered them hidden.

I'll see if I can find any construction photos of the tube or wires behind....I don't know if I took any of them?

After 10 years of Direct TV and Dish prior, I opted out of all due to the ongoing increase in cost. $10 for local channels, 10 each for 2 recievers, and whatever else is added. It came to 90+. I now have an HD antenna on the roof, TIVO at $12 a month. It works great for me, but I'm not far from the towers. One local channel is still having a problem once in a while which has nothing to do with where I'm located. Also, I connected the PC to the reciever and stream movies or TV shows free. The streaming has become a large base, a couple of the sites will show when the new shows are ready. Or you can go direct to the TV station site. I watch anything now that once was DTV and all free with only short blip commericals. Even Showtime streams their latest at no charge. I have to be patient though as the shows are available a week late. You wouldn't "have" to have TIVO or an antenna since the shows aren't coming in for you. Just be aware that DTV will upcharge and continue when that year is over. I just got sick of paying so much for all and it seemed like 90% wasn't even of interest. Sat is a toss up with cable unless the cable is in ground. It wasn't unusual to be tramping through the snow to clear off of dish. Cable was a problem with wind since it was stretched from a telephone pole to the house.

coffee out my nose, thanks to fly... Seriously, though, if it was my DH, and he didn't want the TV mounted to the wall, I wouldn't do it myself as a "surprise." I'm sure your DH has good reasons for not wanting it wall mounted; have you asked him? Perhaps it's because you don't have studs in "traditional" locations. Post-and-beam houses are structurally different. Maybe he doesn't want it that high? If I were you, I'd buy or build a sturdier, larger cabinet or shelving system for the TV. We just moved our 52" flat screen TV to the cabinet DH just finished building, and I was terrified the entire 30 seconds because it felt so wobbly. I thought the TV was going to go over backwards. In your case, I would be very concerned about knocking it off that little cabinet. As far as location, an outlet that's controlled by a switch usually has one "constant hot" outlet and one controlled one. Just plug a lamp or night-light in to figure out which one is controlled by the wall switch, and then plug the TV into the other one. And, I am wondering how much someone who's practicing an instrument is going to be watching TV. ? If you're sitting at the keyboard, it would be very difficult to see the TV above the keyboard. I would place the TV where it's most convenient for watching TV.

kitchenkelly, When we finally got to installing the runner (months and months after having moved in), I was trying so hard to be fine with it--even though I was sure we had asked for it to be wider. Our staircase isn't narrow, so there's enough runner there even with the sizeable amount of wood showing. The runner is 32" wide and the reveal is about 7", not including the wood to the outside of the bannister railings. The installer said something about 6" or 7" being the standard reveal but I think he was just covering himself at that point. Also, our stairway makes a turn, the bottom stairs are wider than the upper stairs, and there are posts that cut in so it was kind of like a geometry puzzle to figure out how close we could get to the posts, etc., and still have it look okay. After the runner had been cut the installer said that we could possibly have had the runner hug the posts but I've never seen it done that way. Not sure how that would have looked and it was too late for us anyway. We're still having a problem with our hard drive but I'll try to take and post photos later if that would help.

i loved the easy cleaning behind the sink and the period look it gave. no splashier than a regular faucet, at least in our kitchen. we had to buy 3" spacer pieces to push it out away from the wall a bit further, but they were supplied by the same company that we bought the faucet from and matched the faucet. no idea about the other questions. oh, and keep in mind if it's an exterior wall and you're in a cold climate, you'll have to insulate the pipes. we dug channels out of our brick exterior wall and due to the close proximity to outside and fear of pipes freezing, we ran low-voltage heat tape that would kick on whenever the temp got below a certain level. not a big deal, but just a question of thinking about it and running the wiring.

This is the best one I have. It was taken after they drywalled. I don't have anything that shows the tube. I think an electrician can do this easy enough for you or if hubby is handy...?

I forgot to say that our flat panel doesn't swivel but it tilts up or down. The bracket is from Costco!

Thanks! We didn't think of that when we built 1 year ago so guessing DH won't think it is worth it (but I do!) It looks great!

DD1 rents and she covered her TV wires/cables with a chandelier cover (gathered cloth that has velco from top to bottom). Only about 5 inches shows but at least she's not seeing cables.

Lindy, thanks so much for the additional photo and details. I want exactly what you have -- no ugly wires and cables showing. I've gotta find a good handyman who replicate your set-up. I enjoy TV watching in bed but I can't stand having the TV monopolize all the space on the bureau.

Allison, I couldn't imagine what you described for your daughter, so I Googled chandelier cover. It's a very creative solution.

I have this same set up but ours was not new construction. We had a home theater company come out and run all the cables through the walls. They also set it up so the components could be stored in another location. All the cables run through the attic. They set up some type of device that allows the remotes to work even though the cable box etc are in another room. We also got the mounting bracket at Costco. Works great for us- our kids can't get their hands on any buttons!
