Please help me spice up this bathroom

Hi All - We are renovating 2 out of 3 bathrooms in our apt. We decided to keep this one as is because it's in great shape even though it's not totally my style. We're going to keep all fixtures as is. My question for you is, what should I do with the walls to make it more interesting? White paint is a bit boring, but any other color other than hunter green clashes. What would you do?

Yellow or gold, pale blue, grey? What color is the adjoining room? How much light does the bathroom get?

It is off the main hallway which will be a cream color. The light is OK - not great but not bad either. Thx...

That looks like a room I would have. I'd go with hershey bar chocolate brown and werther's butterscotch gold and maybe some off white. Maybe stripe or figured towels? I didn't see a shower. Maybe a mirror on that long wall? There are lots of oval stenciled ones around. I know. I've been looking at mirrors. I like yours a lot. Tell me about it. Maybe another one with a similar frame hung the long way? It looks like your medicine cabinet is about half way of the long wall? Then build your art work around the mirror? It might add some depth, too. I drag home 3 or 4 times as many things as I think I will use, hold them up and return the ones that don't cut it. I'll be doing that real soon. I want to have my paper up first. Yup. Papering. There's something about paper that speaks to me.

"...I don't know what is 8+9. ...." I see you used a liquid waterproofing from Laticrete now. Was the reinforcing mesh used? Was the concrete board all first taped with mesh and thin-set and allowed to dry prior to waterproofing? Was the waterproofing given seven days to cure prior to flood test? Did you flood test? "....Attaching some more pics to give an idea of original framing as well as waterproofing layers…....." I don't like any of the framing you show in that first picture. The walls appeared to be framed with "Hat Track" which we use for boarding ceilings here in Vancouver. You would expect to see 2"x4" wall studs metal with 2"x4" Metal Track top and bottom. Seeing these I fear your wall assembly was not rigid enough and the failed grout the result of the wall flexing when pushed on. At the very top you see the Metal Track. There is one up and one down. Both pinned to the concrete floor and ceiling with wedge pins. I raised the ceiling to make room for the rain head and am adding a boarder inside the shower to continue the old ceiling height. Even these studs are pretty light weight. I believe the proper stud by the book is the heavier gauge stud. The kind not stocked in Home Depots but rather the drywall metal speciality stores. Local inspectors let this fly but crack down hard on wood framing and no firestopping. The spray foam I used in stead of throwing away. I find it adds one more level of strength to a new dropped in stud. Once dry it gets screwed off from the back side. Why does it appear you used two layers of 1/4" backer board. Looks like first 1/4" Wonderboard then 1/4" Hardie? The poly behind the backer board would be I think designed to lap over a rubber liner or something like Noble Company's Chloral. It's a bit of a tricky space given its size. If you could get one more foot in either direction, it would open up more possibilities. Right now you are a bit limited due to maintaining proper space for code. Given the space constraints you either have to go to small shower stall to get the large vanity or go to a smaller vanity to get the larger shower. I errored on the side of the larger shower with these designs. These are basic sketches, not to scale. It changes the door position slightly. The window can stay where it is with these designs (or you can move to wall B with either option 2 or 3). In either of these designs, you can flip the door to open into the bedroom rather than the bathroom, which gives you an easier space to live with in terms of egress. Option 1. A shower wall is built next to the toilet. a half wall is built next to the vanity, with glass from wall top to ceiling. You could conceivably throw a laundry basket behind the door in the corner. The vanity would end up being about 38", unless you cheat into the shower more. Toilet would be 32" of floor space, but you could cheat into the shower to make it 36" (which is preferred) Option 2. The shower is 3 ft deep and then the width of the room. You could conceivably shrink the width of this a bit and incorporate a linen closet/open storage space where you could store your laundry on the side closes to the door. The vanity is 42" wide and you have 36" of floor space for the toilet. Feel free to swap position of the toilet and vanity here. Option 3. If you want to give up the large shower in favor of the larger vanity, you swap the shower and vanity positions in this design. This dedicates up to a 42" x 42" space for a shower stall (smaller will give you a bit more open floor space), which is still really quite roomy. This allows for a vanity the full length of the wall. The door is repositioned and opens the opposite way from the earlier design, although this design would definitely be better and may even require that the door actually opens into the bedroom.

I think that Alyssa mirror works much better. The coloring is less red, there is gray, it's darker, and it has some grain showing which gives it more rustic feel. There's nothing wrong with rustic. But if you decide to go more modern, that same style frame, but in a brushed silver metal, would look nice.

pink

goes very well with brass fixtures and forest green.

i was trying to avoid wall paper in general but do you think i should consider?

Wallpaper and a humid bathroom can lead to disaster. You are looking at a much more significant investment since you will need high quality everything to ensure the paper stays put, and hire a professional to install it.

I was thinking a medium gray or a taupey-gray would look nice.

Are those really brass fixtures? I thought they were but it could be my moniter.

It's actually a very pretty little bathroom, as is! I think a light grey-blue would be really nice--the kind of full-spectrum color which shifts with the light.

I love the fixtures, but then I love styles of days gone by. If it were my bathroom I'd pick a khaki color. With Khaki the brass wouldn't stand out, but it and hunter green look awesome together.

What about Restoration Hardware Silver Sage? It's a greyish, bluish, greenish color. Might look very nice in there.

I agree with Harriet. I have paired RH SS with several different shades of green and it's a beautiful combo.

thank so much everyone - I have so many paint samples at this point i think i have silver sage - I will try and get back to you...

...does anyone have an inspiration pics that could help? (i.e. "vintage brass bathrooms")

Do you think you could take down some of the mounted brass accessories?...the towel ring, the soap holder, and the tootbrush cup? That might tone it down a bit and give you a blanker, easier slate to work with.

gayle - that's a great idea - don't know why I didn't think of it earlier. We don't even need them since it's a guest bathroom. Ok, they'll be gone. Now what? lol.

I'm sure someone else here knows more about this than I do, but I wonder if you could refinish/paint the outside of the tub, to make it white. Then you'd have less of that hunter green to deal with. It would be easier to ignore if it were only in the floor. (I guess you can tell I'm not a big fan of hunter green!) Also, keep in mind that if you use a color in the red family on the walls (like pink), it will accentuate the green. I think it's also a great idea to take down some of those fixtures. I think something like Silver Sage could look very pretty in there, and some color on the wall will show off your pretty sink better than the white walls do.

There was a thread not to long ago GLAMOR BATHROOM it was black and white and painted with BM quiet moments a very pretty blue/geen color looked beautiful I tink it would look good in your bathroom tried to find it for you but I could not.

I think a jade-ish or spring green would look great with the brass (and with the hunter if it stays).

If the extra accessories are really high quality, I'd leave them up. Brass won't be 'out of fashion' forever, and they really are very pretty.

If it were my bathroom, I'd be off to the fabric store to see what fabrics jumped out at me for a shower curtain. NOT to say you want a busy, patterned shower curtain -- or even to change what you have, which is a classic. But sometimes fabric shopping will inspire an idea and you'll know just where you want to go with the room.

If you're not a fabric lover, shopping for artwork can have the same affect -- suggesting a direction. You've got a decided old-fashioned bent to the room with the clawfoot and brass -- so you have a time. All you need is a place. English garden with a few ferns an botanical prints? Tropical, with a slightly more exotic plant and prints? English chintz with some pink and floral accents? Lavender could also be lovely with the green, though you'd need to be careful not to overdo it.

I love the color combo of white, hunter green and pale aqua. I find it soothing, restful and spa-like.
