Wicker...just wondering???

The recent thread by dreamgoddess got me thinking...

I too have a wicker settee, chair and coffee table. It's currently sitting down cellar doing nothing.

Hubby threatens to throw it away on occasion.

It would look darling outside- is there anything I can do to make it withstand the outdoors?

Spray something, exterior paint??? I could put it away for the winter...Thanks for your thoughts/any help! :)

You could use exterior house paint in a paint sprayer. My DH used white exterior latex on an antique wicker( parts look like twisted paper so pretty fragile) It sits on a very very small front porch and is not protected from a hard rain. That was 3 or 4 years ago and it is fine. I have a wicker settee on the other side that I spray painted with regular spray paint 2 years ago and its fine too. both get a bit of protection from rain and snow but not much.
Heck if he threatens to throw it out, paint it and use it until it wears out!

I have wicker furniture at our lake cabin that my grandparents built. My grandma put so many layers of paint on the wicker chairs that were on the screen porch and weather was never an issue. She did have the screen porch enclosed with windows before she died (20 years ago) but let me tell you, those chairs are still going strong. They were on the porch (unprotected) for almost 30 years although they did get moved inside for the winter months.

My first idea for you Carrie, since you mentioned yu have a single mattress to use, was to find a king size head and footboard to make into a day bed like you would make a bench out of a smaller bed. If you have a holliwood frame for your bed all you'd have to do was cut the footboard in half and attach it to the ends of the headboard and then to the frame. Plop on the mattress and dress the bed! My second idea is similar to Lynn's. Make a platform the size of the mattress with large pullout drawers. Only I'd find a simple twin head and footboard cutting the head and footboard to be just high enough to hold a bolster at each end looking more like a backless sofa. As for protecting the mattress, I agree that a waterproof mattress cover would take care of the worry of rain. And for the idea of a swing bed....here's one of my favorite beds from my inspiration albums. You wouldn't want to actually swing on it, but it could certainly sway you to a deep sweet dream filled sleep.

Thanks everyone! :) The paint was some already mixed walmart paint. Color creations, Gloss Banner Red. It's what the dude told me worked best for outdoor furniture. Not sure what Michael's is. But, Hobby Lobby sells fabric, crafts, decor. Can find some pretty cute stuff, at great prices. Here's another pic of my "baby" :) He's off to kindy in Aug, and my heart breaks every time I think about it. We packed up a lunch in the picnic basket Friday, and went to the park to hang out. We weren't there 5 mins, and I found myself sobbing like an idiot. It suddenly hit me that my older boys would be out of school in two wks. And that was probaby the last "park day" with a little guy.(sure we'll be at the park a million times more. But, it'll be different. They'll be FOUR, lol) I've been a stay at home mom, taking my babies to the park for 12 yrs. Now what do I do?? :( He's sooo excited and ready, but am I? sniff, sniff. He's not only my paint buddy, but my shopping pal, lunch date, and he's awesome for naptime cuddles. Where does the time go??

I have this chandelier. I have to say I love it every time I lay my eyes on it. I really wanted a Hubbard-whatever the name is...but NOT in my budget. I cannot say a bad thing about it. And for this price, it can't be beat. I normally have ivory shades on it (Target) and in the fall I switch to cranberry ones through the holidays.

I have spray painted a ceiling light bases in place. One was a cracked white porceleine fixture in the kitchen that I sprayed red. I masked off the ceiling iwth tape and newspaper, stuck newspaper into the fixture (after removing the globe) and also held a big piece of cardboard behind when I sprayed. It looks awesome. The cracked porceleine reminded me of a broken toilet, but in red it looks all new and pretty! the second was a groovy 60s globe light ceiling base that was black and I sprayed it silver. I sprayed both with kilz primer first. I also sprayed some accents on my kitchen clock red to match. I sprayed my wicker chairs that I got at Kings dept store 30 years ago brown. Now I have to touch them up every year, but they do look nice on the front porch. I wish i had known about the spray stain, maybe that would have lasted better. I think that most other furniture I would brush for the sake of durability. Except plastic lawn furniture which there is a special spray paint for. Have fun. Kathy

It should do OK with a protective paint on it, but direct sun and rain will take its toll.

The most important part to protect is the bottom of the feet. If they sit in standing water or on moist ground, they will absorb moisture and be the first area to rot.
